~ David Shield. |
David Shield is the anti-heroic secondary antagonist of the 2018 anime superhero film My Hero Academia: Two Heroes, the first installment of the My Hero Academia film series.
He is the scientist who develops supports items for heroes, and the former sidekick of the superhero All Might. After seeing All Might's weakening body, David hires criminals to invade his island home, as a cover to steal technology which will restore his old friend's strength.
He was voiced by Katsuhisa Namase as an adult and Ryōhei Kimura as a young man in Japanese and Ray Chase in English.
Personality[]
David is foremost selfless, always thinking how he can save the innocent. He thinks on a grand scale, taking actions to improve society as a whole. Despite him and his daughter being physically weak by his world's standards, David shows no bitterness or insecurity about it. He greatly admires powerful heroes and appreciates what they do, even blindly at times. He focuses his efforts on what he can do, using his genius intellect to develop technology. Confident in his gadgets to the point, he'd depend on them during his occasional crime fighting. He keeps his family and friends close to his heart, being especially supportive and protective of his daughter.
However, his selflessness has a dark side. In his mission to better society, he can justify crimes as the "greater good" when he's desperate; when he realized his friend and national hero, All Might was losing his strength, he was willing to endanger a whole island to steal a cure, though he was ashamed for doing it and put in great effort to ensure people weren't hurt.
Biography[]
While doing a hero university course in the USA, All Might saved serval scientists from an explosion, including a young David Shield. Grateful for his recuse, David offered to become All Might's first sidekick. Though his weak quirk of bendy figures, meant he couldn't aid in hand-to-hand combat. Instead, he developed useful gadgets as a scientist, such as All Might's first costume, designed to withstand his super strength. Sometimes, David would go out into the field with All Might, such as using his custom car to chase down villains. The two became close friends, with All Might explaining his dream to David: To become a symbol of peace to ensure people in times of crisis. David believed in this goal wholeheartedly, preaching it on TV.
Over the years, the friends eventually went their separate ways. All Might returned to his home of Japan and fulfilled his goal of becoming a symbol. Meanwhile, David moved to I-Island, an artificial island for the world's top scientists studying quirks. He retired as a sidekick and shifted careers to a support item engineer. At some point, David married and had a daughter named Melissa Shield. He was a loving and protective father to his only child, even after discovering she was quirkless. Melissa shared David's talents and studied to become a scientist like him.
David remained in contact with All Might, to the point Melissa called him "Uncle". Though their busy schedule meant their reunions were infrequent, with years in between. David was left to observe All Might's career from afar and reminisce about their glory days. When he discovered All Might was rapidly weakening, David began to developing quirk enhancing technology to revive his friend's strength. Though a committee of Scientists concluded his research was too dangerous and confiscated his prototype. It was placed in a vault within I-Island's Central Tower.
During their next reunion while I-Island was having an expo, All Might had brought his student, Izuku Midoriya with him. While David had been finding ways to length All Might's career, the hero had accepted his fate and was preparing a successor instead. When the teacher and student arrived at David's lad, the former sidekick convinced All Might to let him check his physical state. When he realized the hero had declined in strength yet again, David took matters into his own hands. He planned to steal back his prototype, which All Might could use to regain his strength. With his assistant, Sam, David hired a group of "performers" in Wolfram and his gang. As planned, the gang break into Central Tower, which controlled many of the artificial Island's systems. They put I-Island into a false lockdown and use the Island's robotic police to keep civilians in their homes. Coincidentally, a party for heroes was being held in the Central Tower that same night, which threatened the whole operation. To deal with them, the gang held helpless party guests at gunpoint, forcing even All Might into submission.
Using the chaos as a distraction, David and Sam sneaked to the tops floors of the Central Tower. There, was the vault that contained the prototype. Unknown to David, multiple of Izuku's classmates were also on I-Island at the time. Apart of Japan's top hero course, Izuku and his classmates were able to overpower Wolfram's gang. His daughter, Melissa was accompanied them due to her knowledge of the tower's layout. When Izuku and Melissa made it to the highest floor, they were shocked to catch David and Sam red-handed as they stole the prototype. Melissa cries at the realization her father is the mastermind. Desperately, David tries to explain his actions, but becomes guilt-ridden at his daughter's tears.
Suddenly, Wolfram strolls into the room, admitting that David had been manipulated by his co-conspirators in serval ways. Wolfram's gang only pretended to be performers and were genuine criminals, prepared to hurt people. Additionally, Sam was aware of this fact but kept it secret from David, only caring about the prototype for the money. Saddened, David questioned his assistant's motives: Sam calls his goals' delusional and to get off his high-horse since they're already criminals. Then, Sam grabs the prototype and runs to hand it to Wolfram.
However, Wolfram was no longer interested in an equal partnership with his hirers, and betrayed them. He shots at Sam as a loose-end, leaving him bleeding on the floor. Despite everything, David still tries to protect Sam. Though Wolfram manages to kidnap him, threatening to kill Melissa if he didn't comply. Wolfram intends to force David to do any scientific work his gang requires. Shoving his hostage and the prototype into a helicopter, Wolfram attempts to flee. Finally, All Might is able to arrive at the scene. Alongside with Izuku, they chase down and defeat Wolfred after a destructive battle.
Placed safely on the centurial tower's roof, David was impressed by Izuku's raw power. All Might approaches him, disappointed but not overly angry. He reveals that his evil nemesis, All For One had a hand in Wolfred's plans; The crimelord aided in his sidekick's downfall to hurt him. All Might thinks he could've have done more to put David's mind to rest. Though he says David's crimes were still unnecessary and he should have faith in the next generation, pointing to Izuku and Melissa. David agrees with his old friend, regretting all his actions.
Soon, I-Island is cleaned up from the crime spree, Wolfram's gang arrested and the injured taken to hospital. David's involvement in the crime spree was still being investigated, so his hospital room was guarded by police. Melissa visited him, wanting to encourage his redemption. The police delayed charging David, as the news of Wolfred's attack was still fresh. The police didn't want to reveal I-Island scientists could be exploited, in fear of copy-cat crimes. Though All Might was confident David still retained his old honor and would one day, hand himself in. One thing was for sure, David couldn't continue his science career.
