(To Joe) Wait, I know you. I've been watching you since you shoved in with Phoebe. I followed you to that political speech. You were acting strange, like you didn't want anyone to see you. (To Phoebe) There's something not right here. I tried to look him up, but there's virtually nothing. This man isn't what he says he is. He's either a conman or worse!
~ Dawn

Dawn Brown is a supporting antagonist in Season 4 of the Netflix show You

She is a photographer in England, and is secretly an obsessive fan of Lady Phoebe. Like Joe Goldberg, she's very possessive of her object of obsession, and will do anything to get close to her.

She is portrayed by Alison Pargeter.

Biography[]

A middle-aged woman, Dawn became obsessed with beloved socialite Lady Phoebe Borehall-Blaxworth, believing that they were soul sisters and childhood friends. She stalked Phoebe around London, posing as a photographer, where she took special notice of one of Phoebe's friends, serial killer Joe Goldberg, who was undercover as Professor Jonathan Moore.

Disguising herself as a waitress, Dawn infiltrated a party Lady Phoebe was throwing. Approaching Phoebe and pretending to be an undercover police officer, she convinced Phoebe to follow her into a private room. Dawn then locked the door and revealed her deception, claiming she only wanted to keep Phoebe safe from the Eat-the-Rich killer and that she and Phoebe were childhood friends. Phoebe, though terrified, plays along with her delusions, though she briefly panics and attempts to escape when Dawn attempts to slash her arm to recreate a "soul sister" tattoo, an effort Dawn fortunately abandons upon seeing Phoebe's terror.

After Phoebe fails to convince Dawn to let her book them a flight to Bora Bora, the two women have a heart-to-heart about Phoebe's boyfriend Adam Pratt, whom Dawn correctly believes is a greedy and manipulative golddigger. Dawn confides in Phoebe about her abusive stepfather, who treated her mother like royalty in public and abused her in private.

Having realised that Phoebe was kidnapped, Joe arrives, pretending to be maintenance, and Phoebe reveals his identity and guilts Dawn into letting him in by telling her he's not safe from the killer. Phoebe and Joe attempt to reason with Dawn, but Dawn, again correctly, believes that Joe is a conman or worse. As she threatened Joe, Phoebe disarmed Dawn and shouted at her for controlling and fake-protecting her. Before Phoebe could stab her, police broke in to arrest Dawn. They find Simon Soo's severed ear in Dawn's bag (planted by Joe). Dawn is arrested for the murders of Simon, Malcolm Harding, and Gemma Graham-Greene, futilely protesting her innocence to Phoebe as she is escorted away.

Dawn was subsequently committed to a mental institution, and she likely remained there for life.

But her actions of stalking, kidnapping, and attempted murder of Joe and Phoebe, combined with the recent deaths of her rich celebrity friends thanks to Joe's split personality named Rhys Montrose, marked the beginning of Phoebe's downward spiral in her mental health. She became a drug addict so that she could mask her PTSD, as well as recklessly marrying Adam Pratt without thinking, which led to her having a complete mental breakdown after the wedding. Which led to her being committed to getting psychiatric help.

Fortunately, Phoebe over comes her trauma, and she leaves the celebrity life behind as she goes to find peace within.

Trivia[]

  • Dawn's unhealthy relationship with Lady Phoebe is heavily similar to Yolanda Saldívar's with the late Texan singer Selena Quintanilla, as both are obsessed with them to the point of considering themselves their "friends" before getting arrested for atrocities committed against them. Saldívar killed Quintanilla by shooting her when they fought over some documents Selena needed back as well as cutting Yolanda out of her life for good, while Phoebe managed to defend herself and is still alive, despite Dawn holding her hostage to "protect" her from the Eat-the-Rich killer. In addition, Dawn is also charged, albeit wrongly through Joe Goldberg, with the Eat-the-Rich murders.
    • Since Yolanda's case happened in real life, she got a life sentence for murder on the first degree and will be eligible for parole on March 30th, 2025, precisely after having served 30 years of sentence and 30 years after Selena's death.
