l think he's the guy that killed Papich. lt ain't the first time he's been on my trail. He's a Panamanian l trained. His name's DeSilva. Now he's a f***ing mercenary.
~ Thomas Beckett explains who DeSilva is.

DeSilva is the secondary antagonist of the 1993 film Sniper.

He was portrayed by Edward Wiley.

Biography[]

Sniper[]

DeSilva was a Panamanian sniper who was trained by Thomas Beckett. Soon, DeSilva became a mercenary after finding it to be more profitable to work for the enemy rebels trying to overthrow Panama's government. DeSilva was hired to kill Beckett and his spotter, Corporal Doug Papich, as they were attempting to kill his employer, General Miguel Alavarez. DeSilva ambushed the two during a botched extraction attempt and shot the young Papich. Beckett risked his life to save Papich, but DeSilva shot Papich again, killing him. He attempted to kill Beckett as well, but missed.

Some time passes, and Beckett is partnered with NSC agent Richard Miller, a rookie sniper. They return to Panama to take out Alvarez and his partner, drug lord Raul Ochoa. Once DeSilva kills Cacique, the two's guerilla guide, Beckett realizes his former protégé is the one who killed Papich. Beckett sees that they are being followed by DeSilva and decides to plant a piece of garbage on the ground to trick him into finding them.

At night, Beckett takes the watch while Miller sleeps. DeSilva prepares to shoot Miller, but he could not outsmart Beckett, who had set a trap for him. Beckett used a knife on fishing line to make ripples in the nearby water, which distracted him and allowed Beckett to fire a round through DeSilva's scope and into his eye, killing him and avenging Papich's death.

Personality[]

DeSilva was a very mysterious and frightening man. Almost nothing is known about him other than that he was once trained by Thomas Beckett and eventually turned on his former teacher, killing his spotter and later attempting to kill both Beckett and Miller. DeSilva was motivated by pure greed, as he had no qualms about betraying both his home country and the country that trained him for money. DeSilva was also a ruthless and cold-blooded killer, who did not hesitate to kill innocent people on behalf of his employers. He killed at least two people in cold blood, and even kept Cacique's sunglasses as a souvenir. DeSilva was a skilled sniper and wore an entire suit of camouflage with foliage, but was not as stealthy or smart as his former teacher, Beckett, which ended up causing his death.

Trivia[]

  • Despite being a mere target of opportunity, DeSilva would go on to become one of their four primary targets. Because he killed Corporal Papich, Cacique and attempted to kill both Miller and Beckett, DeSilva was a greater threat than his employers and ended up becoming the secondary antagonist of Sniper.
  • DeSilva has no lines in the entire film, in either English or Spanish.
  • DeSilva's sniper rifle is a Russian SVD Dragunov, chambered in 7.62x54mmR.
