DeWitt Albright is one of the primary antagonists of the 1995 neo-noir Devil in a Blue Dress. Albright is a corrupt private detective hired by politician Matthew Terrell to destroy incriminating photographs of him being used to blackmail him by Daphne Monet.
He was portrayed by the late Tom Sizemore, who also played Max Peltier in Strange Days, Chance Wilder in Harley Davidson and the Marlboro Man, Lewis Hodda in Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, Sonny Forelli in Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, Paulie Pintero in Enemy Of The State and Kurt Rossi in Crime Scene Investigation:Miami.
History[]
Much of Albright's past is unknown; however, he mentions having been a businessman prior to taking on private investigation as his profession. Albright was hired by Matthew Terrell to recover incriminating photographs that revealed him as a pedophile, which were being used to blackmail him by Daphne Monet, the girlfriend of his political opponent Todd Carter.
Knowing that Monet - who is mixed race - frequented illegal black nightclubs, Albright posed as being hired by Carter to track her down and hired Ezekiel "Easy" Rawlins, a recently laid-off black airline worker and war veteran. Instructing Easy to find her, Albright met with him at an amusement park to discuss his findings. Upon finding Easy being attacked by a gang of young white men, Albright scattered them by firing his pistol and threatened the ringleader with it until he apologized. Albright took Easy's information, unaware that his source had lied to him.
Upon discovering the information was bad, Albright and his men broke into Easy's home to threaten him. Albright agreed to spare him after helping himself to some of Easy's whiskey, though warning him not to screw up again. Realizing Daphne's friend Richard McGee had possession of the photographs, Albright murdered him but was unable to find the photos.
Tracking down Daphne, Albright found Easy with her but spared him of taking him for the murders. Albright kidnapped Daphe and took her to a cabin he owned to interrogate her. Albright was tracked by Easy and his friend Mouse, who engaged him and his men in a firefight. Albright's men were killed and he was fatally wounded by Mouse. Albright attempted to walk to his car, but collapsed and succumbed to his injuries.
Personality[]
Albright is on the surface amiable and genial, often engaging Easy in friendly conversation. However, beneath the surface he is violent and mercenary, willing to do anything for his employer. Albright is rather sadistic as well, taking great joy in threatening people and tormenting them. He does, however, show respect for Easy's bravery despite having the same bigotry as most whites in the 1950s and initially regards him as a friend before souring towards him.
