The Dead Exorcist is a minor antagonist in Season 1 of the 2024 adult animated musical series Hazbin Hotel.
Like her name implies, she was one of the Exorcists, and was killed at Carmilla Carmine's hands at the most recent Extermination. As the first case of a Sinner killing an angel in history, her death causes Adam to move up the next Extermination by six months and plan to wipe out all life in Hell as payback.
Biography[]
The Dead Exorcist was a member of Adam's Exorcist army for an unknown amount of time. For years on end, she took part in the yearly Exterminations where she and her fellow Exorcists slaughtered Sinners by the thousands for satisfaction and to stop them from starting a rebellion against Heaven's forces. In the Extermination that took place right before Season 1, the Exorcist and her friends cornered Carmilla Carmine and her daughters in the streets of Hell. While her daughters ran to safety, Carmilla engaged the Exorcist in combat. Due to her boots being made of angelic steel, the one thing capable of permanently killing angels, she was able to decapitate the Exorcist by striking down at her neck, the angel getting to make one last look of horror before her death; this was not something Carmilla intended, as she didn't know angels could be killed and was just buying time for her daughters. The Exorcist's friends presumably ran away in fear, though this is unknown.
Knowing that the Exorcist's death could cause Hell's people to plot war against Heaven as revenge for Exterminations, Carmilla tried to cover up everything about the Exorcist's death. However, the Vees were still able to find her head shortly after Extermination Day, and a few weeks later, Heaven's drones would find the rest of the corpse. An enraged Lute demanded an immediate genocide of all of Hell, but Adam decided to wait as to "not risk them catching on".
A few months, during an Overlord meeting, Velvette would present the dead angel's head to the other Overlords. She immediately tried to convince everyone to start waging war against Heaven, but the Overlords - specifically Carmilla and Zestial - were against the idea as they didn't know who killed the angel and how, and war with Heaven could result in total destruction for all of Hell. In a musical number, Velvette teases Carmilla and eventually figures out she knows how the Exorcist died; the older Overlord ends the meeting, and privately reveals to Zestial and her daughters that she is the one who killed the angel. One of the Egg Boiz overhears the conversation and tells Carmilla's secret to Alastor.
Near the end of the season, Alastor tells Charlie about Carmilla's achievement of killing an Exorcist, convincing her to prepare an army to fight back against Adam's forces, and Vaggie to go to Carmilla and convince her to lend her angelic weaponry. On Extermination Day, Adam and his army attack the hotel to get revenge for the fallen Exorcist's death, but all it results in is hundreds of casualties on both sides, including Adam. The Extermination is ultimately cancelled.
