Disgusting, heinous creatures roam that area where giants lived... They are stronger than anything you will find in Bugaria. I can't fathom why they've never tried crossing over.
~ Venus on the Dead Landers.

Dead Landers are minor antagonists in the 2019 role-playing video game Bug Fables: The Everlasting Sapling. They are vicious, unspeakable monsters that inhabit the Dead Lands, the territories that lay beyond Bugaria, and attack any traveler on sight.

Biography[]

Not much is known about the Dead Landers and how they came into being. All is known is that they came into existence ever since the day of reckoning that banished the once-fabled "giants" (humans) from the world while bugs developed sapience and formed their own society.

Team Snakemouth and their allies first encounter the Dead Landers in the Giant's Lair, an abandoned human house that was left in a damaged state for a very long time, when they were going after the Wasp King to not allow him to obtain the Everlasting Sapling. The Dead Landers constantly appeared in Team Snakemouth's way as extremely powerful enemies, with Dead Lander Ω, the largest of all Dead Landers, stalking them on every turn, and dropping powerful Dead Landers γ whenever it notices them. Finally, the team manages to reach the fridge, but just when they were about to climb it, a huge group of Dead Landers ambushes them, leaving them surrounded. The party managed to slay the Dead Landers and continue their journey, assuming that Dead Landers also slow Wasp King down as well. Team Snakemouth also encounters several Dead Landers when they travel through the cabinet to reach the opposite side of the active stove to shut off the flames.

The Dead Landers also appear post-game during "A New Hope" sidequest, where they attack Team Snakemouth and Roy when the latter tries to plant crops in the Giant's Lair to "fill it with life again", but they were killed before they could bring any harm.

Bestiary[]

One of the incomprehensible beasts that lay beyond Bugaria's safe haven. It is too risky to engage, even with a full exploration team. Flee on sight. More information would be too risky to gather.
~ Dead Landers' shared bestiary entry.

Dead Lander α[]

Ngh, the real monsters don't compare to the northern tales. What firepower... Focus on blocking its poison, team. Leif, unearth it when it burrows!
~ Kabbu's spy notes on Dead Lander α.
What the heck is that? Is that even a bug!? Dead Landers creep me out... It's got all sorta poisons, and it can dig! Leif, be ready to bring it out!
~ Vi's spy notes on Dead Lander α.
What a terrifying organism... We can't get a read on it at all. And it's got quite potent poisons, too. When we pressure it, it burrows to hide. It won't expect our ice magic underground!
~ Leif's spy notes on Dead Lander α.

Dead Lander β[]

This disgusting, poison vomiting creature is simply out of my reach... Vi, Leif, I have never needed you more than I do now!
~ Kabbu's spy notes on Dead Lander β.
Yeugh! What is this slimy stuff it's spitting!? GROSS! No matter how much I hit it, it's not coming down... guess it's up to me!
~ Vi's spy notes on Dead Lander β.
Ugh. Just ugh. This disgusting liquid...! How dare you drench us in it!? It cannot be knocked down from the air... We'll have to use our TP wisely.
~ Leif's spy notes on Dead Lander β.

Dead Lander γ[]

What cursed creature could carry these monsters with ease!? We may even need to consider retreating...! We must block those spore missiles, but that claw cannot be ignored, either!
~ Kabbu's spy notes on Dead Lander γ.
I dunno what's scarier, this or the thing that dropped it... M-Maybe we should flee? That claw's super scary, but the spores are trouble too! We gotta be careful!
~ Vi's spy notes on Dead Lander γ.
By Elizant... Does the thing that dropped this creature see our struggle as a game!? Running may be a good idea... Tch. This thing's got powerful melee and ranged attacks. We'll have to give it our all.
~ Leif's spy notes on Dead Lander γ.

Trivia[]

  • While their true nature is not known, all Dead Landers are weak to ice magic, implying that they are at least partially plant or fungi-based organisms.
  • According to the developers, before Hoaxe reached the Wasp Kingdom and became the Wasp King, he had fought the Dead Landers for the entirety of his lifetime.
  • One of the in-game lore books states that the Dead Landers cannot enter Bugaria because of the Mother Crystal protecting it from outside threats, Dead Landers included. The developers had also confirmed in 1.1 AMA that Dead Landers always go to wherever there is food to be found.
