Hear that, boys?
~ Dean Fenton calling everyone inside the saloon to get the new sheriff, Lucky Luke, out of town.

Dean Fenton is the overarching antagonist of the 1969 Lucky Luke comic book Dalton City.

He is the former owner of Fenton Town, a town where most outlaws spend their time in the saloons, gambling houses and seedy hotels. There, Dean Fenton gained money by making the citizens live their lives in a poor way, as the food there was so terrible that they caused multiple diseases, like heartburns, as well as multiple deaths. He also threw away every sheriff that tried to keep order inside Fenton Town, covered in tar and feathers.

He is also shown to always cause destruction inside the saloon with the citizens fighting each other on purpose, allowing him to collect the bills for himself. One sheriff, Lucky Luke, eventually managed to finally arrest him, leading to the town being abandoned. However, when the Daltons learn that the town is abandoned, they use this opportunity to revive it under a different name, Dalton City.

Personality[]

Dean Fenton is a greedy businessman who is always hungry for money, exploiting the town in multiple ways to gain as much money as he can, without caring about the health of citizens. He is also shown to hate silence, as the fighting he causes inside the saloon gives the ambience he wants. However, he can also get scared when a sheriff manages to surpass him to the point of letting himself being arrested.

Biography[]

Dalton City[]

Some time prior to the events of the story, Dean Fenton took control of Fenton Town after the pioneers, who originally founded the town, abandoned it. There, he made his headquarters in the Queen of Hearts saloon, collecting money from the Undertaker by exploiting his own town's ressources and food, causing multiple citizens to either die of food poisoning or be shot. Multiple sheriff tried to stop his deeds, but nearly all of them failed and were packed out of town, while some of them either escaped at night time or added to Dean Fenton's fortune.

While Dean Fenton was counting his pile of money, Lucky Luke arrived in Fenton Town, with the task of being the new sheriff of the town so Dean Fenton's plans can finally be thwarted. Two thugs notice Luke inside the sheriff's office and get inside the saloon, stopping the fight in the process. Dean Fenton is irritated by this, as he did not like the silence that was going on. The duo then inform Dean that someone is in the Sheriff's office. Dean then goes there to confront him, only to be assaulted by a broom, held by Lucky Luke, causing him to sneeze. Dean then asks why Luke has moved in to the town, with the latter responding that he is there to become the new sheriff, with an official letter of appointement he found inside the office. Dean tells Luke that he doesn't reckon anyone else would take on the sheriff's job, taking him inside the saloon to get his badge. He warns Luke that he won't keep his badge for so long, as he calls the townsfolk to give him the same treatement as the other sheriffs. However, Luke manages to overpower him and have him surrender, alongside everybody else in the saloon. The saloon is then burned down by Luke, who escorts Dean Fenton to the penitentiary, sentenced to hard labour for 1 223 years.

There, he tells the story of his town to the other prisoners. The Daltons try to get Joe, who is more angrier than before, to come listen to the story, but he refuses, telling them to go away. However, the story Dean Fenton was telling eventually gave Joe the idea of reviving Fenton Town under a new name, Dalton City.
