Villain Overview

The Death Angels are the main antagonists of the A Quiet Place film series.

They are a hostile and ferocious species of super-evolved extraterrestrial predators that arrived on Earth on an asteroid that landed on its surface, and have since begun eliminating almost all life in America, as they can travel more than 300mph just running. They kill anything and everything that makes even the slightest noise, assisted by a sense of acute hearing far beyond anything produced on Earth. This, combined with their indestructible armor, allowed them to massacre most sapient life on the planet, including a sizable portion of humanity, subsequently causing society to collapse.

They are portrayed by the film's director John Krasinski in motion-capture (who also played Lee Abbott in the same series as well as Goldenface in Threat Level Midnight) while their vocal sound effects were provided by Justin M. Davey in the 2018 film and Michael Barosky in its 2021 sequel.

Description[]

The Death Angels are emaciated, vaguely humanoid creatures whose entire bodies are covered by many plates of chitinous armor. They are stated to be "evolutionary perfect" machines that evolved to withstand firearms and even the destruction of their own planet. They also possess arms with prehensile digits, but they are only ever observed using their limbs for locomotion. They have abnormally sharp claws and teeth that are strong enough to cut through trucks and metal, and it is their main weapon for killing their prey. They are also inhumanly fast, able to travel miles in a minute, quickly moving to locations faster than their prey can react.

Due to their lack of eyes, the Death Angels hunt by sound, and are completely blind. They have sensitive plates lining the front of their faces that can extend and contract to help them gauge the direction of where a sound is coming from. The back of their heads are capable of unfolding into massive ear-like structures with pronounced, slimy eardrums. Using these, they can detect even the most subtle of changes in sounds as little as a floorboard creaking miles away. The creatures also do not need to breathe, sleep, or even eat, and are able to survive in seemingly any climate.

An ability that the Death Angels also have is the ability to affect electricity. As seen multiple times in the film, electronics such as lights tend to flicker in a Death Angel's presence. Why and how they do this is completely unknown for this time.

Biography[]

Past[]

Although the origins of the Death Angels are largely unknown, they existed for nearly a millennium before their planet of origin was destroyed by unknown causes. Thanks to their hard armor and durable nature, they survived inside the planet's fragments, which became asteroids. Eventually, they arrived on Earth in a meteor shower and fall into several cities such as Millbrook, Mexico and Shanghai.

Prior to the events of the first film, during Day 1, the Abbott family are watching a baseball game for their son Marcus just as they witness one of the asteroids arrive on Earth, ending the game abruptly. Lee went back to his pickup truck and talked to Ronnie, a local police offer to discuss on what is going on. Ronnie then replied that units are headed out to deal with the situation, but a Death Angel began attacking his police car and landed on a store just as Lee went back on his pickup truck but won't start. Meanwhile, Evelyn, Marcus and Beau are driving back and get stuck on traffic, but a creature lands on a station wagon and they dodge it from its claw attack. As they continued to dodge the vehicles, they then encountered a driverless bus and saw that a creature had killed its driver but they drive backwards and hide in a nearby building.

More creatures began attacking the town just as Lee, Regan and more townsfolk hide in a bar to avoid being killed. They went under in a table to avoid detection just as Lee silences a man while a teenage couple lose their cell reception from their mom. But the couple's phone accidentally rings, alerting the creature and killing several people just as Lee and Regan escape from the restaurant with the creature going after them.

They began approaching the damaged police car where Evelyn, Marcus and Beau are hiding in. The creature tried to attack Lee and Regan but the officer from earlier began shooting at the creature to save them, though the shots ricochet off the creature's impenetrable armor and the officer sacrifices himself to save the family just as the creature slashes at him with Marcus covering his ears in horror.

This combined with their impenetrable armor, allowing them to fight off any resistance, including Earth's militaries, and all of the sapient life on the entire planet, which subsequently caused society to crumble and collapse.

A Quiet Place: Day One[]

To be added

A Quiet Place[]

Over the span of three months, most of Earth's human and animal populations have been wiped out by the Death Angels with the US military (and presumably other armies as well) giving up on trying to fight back against them. The Abbotts family — the wife named Evelyn, the husband named Lee, a congenitally deaf daughter named Regan, and the two sons named Marcus and Beau — silently searching for supplies in a deserted town. While out in the open, the family communicates with American Sign Language (ASL). 4-year-old Beau is drawn to a battery-operated space shuttle toy, but his father takes it away. Regan returns the toy to Beau, who also takes the batteries his father removed.

Beau activates the shuttle when the family is walking home through the woods, near a bridge. Its noise makes him an instant target for a nearby creature and he is swiftly killed. Later on, as one of the children knock over a lantern, the family prepares for a potential Death Angel attack as something lands on the roof. However, it only turned out to be some raccoons that jump off of the roof and can be seen from the window. Then, one of the Death Angels pounces on one of the raccoons after they move away from the house, crushing them in one swift stroke.

Lee later takes Marcus fishing at the nearby river, where it is safe to talk aloud due to their voices being covered by the sound of the rushing water. While walking home, Lee encounters an old man in the forest whose wife was killed by the Death Angel. Although Lee urges the man to stay quiet, the old man was driven to suicide. He screams to draw the Death Angel to him, not even caring that he had placed an innocent man and his child in danger by doing so. A Death Angel then arrives and kills him in one swift motion, unaware that Lee and his son were nearby.

Alone at the house, Evelyn goes into labor earlier than expected. While making her way to their house basement, she steps on a large nail. In pain, she accidentally drops a glass picture frame and alerts a nearby creature. Evelyn flips a switch that changes the exterior house lights to red as a danger signal to the others, and struggles to remain silent during her contractions. Arriving at the farm and seeing the lights, Lee instructs Marcus to set off fireworks as a diversion. He finds Evelyn hiding in the bathroom with their newborn son. The baby starts crying, attracting a creature. And they narrowly avoid another attack on the way to their improvised soundproofed barn basement.

Lee leaves to find the other children, after promising Evelyn he will protect them. Evelyn falls asleep, but wakes to discover that the barn basement is flooded with water from a broken pipe and that the creature is stalking her. Regan hurries back to the farm. She and Marcus take refuge atop a grain silo, lighting a fire to alert their father to their whereabouts. However, they run out of lighter fluid and the fire dies before they can attract Lee's attention. A hatch door gives way and Marcus falls into the silo. The sound of the door falling distracts the creature stalking Evelyn which then runs towards the silo.

Marcus sinks into the corn and nearly suffocates, but Regan jumps in and saves him. They avoid further danger by clinging to the fallen silo door and survive a subsequent creature attack by hiding under it. Regan's cochlear implant reacts to the proximity of the creature by emitting a piercingly loud high-frequency sound that drives the creature away. The children escape from the silo and reunite with Lee. The creature returns, attacks and wounds Lee, while Marcus and Regan hide in a pickup truck. After seeing his father wounded, Marcus shouts impulsively, attracting the creature to the truck.

Due to its unpleasant sound, Regan turns her cochlear implant off for the first time, unaware of the fact that it would have potentially driven the creature away. Lee uses sign language to tell Regan and Marcus that he has always loved them before sacrificing himself by yelling to draw the creature away from his children, so that way they can escape. The creature then kills Lee, allowing Regan and Marcus roll the truck down a hill to escape and reunite with Evelyn and the baby at the farmhouse.

The four retreat to the house's basement, which to this point was off-limits to the children. There, Regan sees her father's notes on the creatures and his experimentation with several different implants. When the creature returns to invade the basement, Regan realizes that the sound made by the implant distresses the creature and hence she switches the device back on and places it on a nearby microphone, magnifying the feedback to ward off the creature. Painfully disoriented, the creature exposes the flesh beneath its armored head, which Evelyn shoots, killing the creature and avenging Lee's death. The family views a CCTV monitor, showing two creatures attracted by the noise of the shot. Now armed with the knowledge of the Death Angels' weakness and a shotgun, the family arm themselves, ready to fight back.

A Quiet Place Part II[]

After presumed to have killed the two other creatures, Evelyn, Regan, Marcus, and their newborn son begin to leave their home just as it is destroyed so they can find any living communities left, bringing a portable guitar amplifier and microphone to fend off the creatures. As they approached a train yard, Evelyn steps on a booby trap, causing bottles to cling which makes noise to signal any creature nearby.

They begin to run to escape the noise but Marcus steps on a bear trap, finding himself screaming in pain just as Evelyn tries to cover his mouth in an attempt to silence him. The baby also cries as well and Regan places him on a box while Evelyn opens the bear trap clamped on Marcus' leg. But the noise attracts a nearby creature that attempts to kill them, though Regan is able to turn on the speaker, creating a high pitched frequency that weakens it and allowing Evelyn to kill the creature with a shotgun.

They soon encounter Emmett, an old friend of Lee who silences them just as they notice another creature, which had been presumably alerted by Evelyn's shotgun. The creature begins to chase them by swinging over the rooftops though the debris falls on it just as Emmett and the rest of the Abbotts hide in his secret bunker. It is later revealed by Emmett that his family was also involved on the first day of the invasion, and that his children were killed by the creature while his wife died 11 weeks ago from an illness. Suddenly, Regan hears "Beyond the Sea" and believes that it is a clue to a radio tower on a nearby island for survivors to go to and against Marcus and Evelyn's wishes, decides to secretly go alone there so she can transmit the frequency to allow survivors to pick up the signal to use it against the creatures.

On the way, Regan spots an abandoned train and goes inside, but after crows fly off and make noise as well as being startled by a dead corpse while getting a medical aid, a creature begins to go inside after being alerted to its presence. The creature tries to kill Regan but she uses hear hearing device to disorient the creature and fires a shot at the creature, though it continues to be angered and Regan tries to load her gun but it gets stuck. The creature tries to kill her but Emmett arrives in time and shoots it in the head, who had just been implored by Evelyn to bring her back. The two hide in a nearby train station just as another creature is alerted. Emmett tries to convince Regan to come back to him but instead she convinces him to join her on her mission to the island. Back at Emmett's bunker, Marcus is tasked by Evelyn to watch over the baby as she goes to the pharmacy on her own to get medical supplies.

While Evelyn goes to the pharmacy, Marcus decides to go around the factory, unaware that the tank has ran out of air, while exploring the factory, Marcus stumbles upon the corpse of Emmett's wife. Startled, he knocks over some objects, alerting a nearby creature. Marcus narrowly gets into the bunker, but accidentally locks himself and the baby inside. Meanwhile, Emmett and Regan find a marina and search for a boat. Feral humans living there ambush them. Emmett then orders Regan to dive, which she does and deliberately creates noise and attracts two creatures that slaughter the deranged inhabitants.

Emmett stabs the leader with the knife to attract the creature to kill him before jumping off to avoid being killed as well. When one creature jumps in after him, it quickly drowns. Emmett realizes the creatures can't swim, while the other creature gets trapped on one of the boats. Regan secures a small boat and the two reach the island where a small colony of survivors are living a relatively normal existence. The colony leader reveals that when the government discovered the creatures were unable to swim, the National Guard moved as many people as possible to the islands, but only 2 boats made it out of 12 due to people panicking. Marcus and the baby remain trapped in the air-tight bunker and are are about to suffocate. Evelyn returns and witnesses the creature attacking the bunker.

Using a pistol, she fires it above to attract the creatures' attention. She then fires on an explosive to set the creature on fire. Although the flames are unable to kill the alien, it does attract sprinklers on the foundry, which distracts the creature long enough so Evelyn can save her children. The three continue hiding inside the bunker as the creature resumes prowling the foundry. The next day, Emmett finds out that one of the creatures that attacked him and Regan have boarded a yacht at the marina has drifted to the island, Emmett rushes back to the survivors to warn them about the creature being on the island. As Emmett warns the survivors to get inside their homes, the creature immediately begins attacking and slaughtering the survivors.

The colony leader, Emmett, and Regan jump into a car and lead the creature to the radio station. On the way, the creature tries to attack them but is unable to as it tears a piece off the vehicle resulting it being left behind. As they arrive, the creature kills the colony leader while Emmett and Regan escape into the radio station. The creature attacks and nearly kills Emmett when Regan transmits her hearing aid's high-frequency through the station's room speakers. The creature is incapacitated, allowing Regan to impale its exposed head with a metal rod, killing the creature and saving Emmett.

Simultaneously at the foundry, the creature has discovered the bunker. Evelyn rushes back into the bunker and tries to shut the door only for the creature to open it and attack them. The creature also throws off the box the baby was being put on. It attacks Evelyn and rips a piece of her pants, but before it can kill her, Marcus picks up Regan's transmission and plays it through his portable radio, incapacitating the creature which allows Marcus to fatally shoot it with Evelyn's revolver. Regan then leaves her hearing aid connected to the radio station's microphone, allowing anyone receiving the frequency to fight the creatures.

Weaknesses[]

Because of their superb hearing abilities, high pitched frequencies will disorient and irritate them and can be used to immobilize the creatures or even drive them away. Prolonged exposure to extremely high frequencies can and will kill them. While the outside of their body is heavily armored, their insides are soft and not protected by armor, and a well-timed shotgun blast to a Death Angel's sensory organs or mouth can instantly kill it.

The Death Angels are not particularly smart either, as they are shown to have predatory intelligence and exclusively attack things that make sound, as shown when one Death Angel was attacking the vehicle Regan and Marcus were in rather then attacking them. Due to them being completely blind, actually finding a silent target is very difficult for them. Being near naturally loud areas, such as near rivers, will help drown out other sounds. They also can be easily distracted by other noises in the area, immediately forgetting about their target and running off to go find the source of the other sound.

As shown in the sequel, they also cannot swim in deep water and will quickly die from drowning. During the film's climax, Regan puts the hearing aid on the radio station's microphone, allowing it to disorient the creature before killing it with a metal rod. It also transmits to Marcus Abbott's radio so he can kill a creature that attacked him, Evelyn and their newborn baby as well. Regan leaving the hearing device will allow anyone who turns to the correct transmission on their radio to use it against the creatures.

Trivia[]

  • The design of the Death Angels was inspired by bog people (corpses who are buried in peat bogs).
  • John Krasinski, the director of the film who also plays Lee, mo-capped the Death Angels in certain scenes.
  • The Death Angels were designed by the film's special effects supervisor Scott Farrar. The CGI for the Death Angels was done by Industrial Light and Magic (ILM).
  • The Death Angels are referred to as "Death Angels" and a number of similar ones in newspaper clippings appearing in various promotional material for A Quiet Place. In the movie itself, a clipping calling them "Dark Angels" appears, but they are never called by this name or any other.
  • Despite being shown hunting humans and animals alike, the creatures never eat what they kill in the films, suggesting they kill for pleasure or out of pure instinct. This makes little sense by any means due to the fact they have sharp teeth and working jaws, unless they eat they’re victims offscreen.
  • Despite the Death Angels' chitinous armor being bulletproof in the film, in reality, chitin itself is far from indestructible, and the amount needed to repel military grade weapons would be impossible for any living creatures to sustain as armor, as it would be too thick to house their organs or even allow the Death Angels to move at all.
  • Since they kill everything that makes sound, they weren't shown to kill each other. However, it could be because they can identify one of their species by using sound, and since the sound they make are the same sound, that means that they recognize the same sound coming from one of their own.
  • The franchise established that the Death Angels were spread around the entire world and caused the society to collapse. However, there's a major flaw in this establishement: they have heavy armor, they can't swim and can drown into the water, and the only place that was collapsed was America, as it makes sense since Mexico, the country where they were crashed to, is from America.
    • However, a theory could possibly be that chunks of the asteroid that carried the Death Angels to Earth broke off of it when it entered the atmosphere and several of them were on them, and that those chunks landed in various parts of the world.
  • The population of Death Angels on Earth is unknown. There were approximately 3-5 Death Angels in Millbrook. Each meteorite may have brought a few Death Angels.
