The Death Devil is the overarching antagonist of the Chainsaw Man franchise. She is the most powerful and dangerous Devil in existence, representing the primordial fear of death itself. The eldest of the Four Horsemen, she and her sisters were involved in a great battle against Chainsaw Man in the past.
As the Great King of Terror, she was prophesized by Nostradamus to descend onto Earth and reduce it to an apocalyptic wasteland, ruling over its remains. Because of Nostradamus' prophecy, her younger sisters and Public Safety sought to kill her and avert the apocalypse for their own reasons.

Nothing is known about the Death Devil's appearance, but as with the rest of her sisters, she is female.

Background[]
Many years ago, the Four Horseman, along with the Weapon Devils, were locked in a heated battle with Chainsaw Man, who in the end ran away and disappeared. The Horsemen went onto looking for him, unsuccessfully, after that, they went their own ways, but the eldest Horseman did not arrive on Earth and her whereabouts are unknown.
In an unknown period of time, the Prophecy of Nostradamus was written, foreseeing the arrival of Death, who would bring the end of humanity and usher in the Age of Devils in July 1999.
Part 1: Public Safety Arc[]
The Death Devil is first alluded to when Makima reveals to Kishibe her plan to use Pochita to erase the concepts of death, war, and hunger.
Part 2: Academy Arc[]
The Death Devil is first mentioned by name when Hirofumi Yoshida asks Denji if he (as Chainsaw Man) would be willing to devour the Death Devil for the sake of humanity. Later, Yoshida informs Fami about the Prophecy of Nostradamus and the arrival of a "Great King of Terror" in July 1999 that plans to end humanity and usher in an Age of Devils. Fami later reveals that her ultimate goal is to “stop” this ultimate terror by commanding several members of the Chainsaw Man Church around the world to terrorize the populace, which in theory would make the War Devil and Chainsaw Man strong enough to take on the ultimate terror. Nayuta eventually confirms the Great King of Terror’s identity to be their eldest sister, Death. Barem Bridge later reveals that Nayuta's previous incarnation, Makima, intended to kill the Death Devil using Chainsaw Man's power, remarking that Makima could've stopped her.
Powers and Abilities[]
- Immortality: As a Primal Fear and the most powerful Devil in existence, the Death Devil is immortal and nearly unkillable, even never undergoing a cycle of reincarnation once.
- Fear empowerment: Due to Pochita eating the Devils associated with other four probable ways of life's end, the Death Devil became feared by humanity by default due to all Devils being typically associated with death, thus making her the strongest Devil.
