Villain Overview

Death Girl, better known as Death, is the personification of death/the grim reaper seen in Pearl Jam's "Do the Evolution" music video.

Appearance[]

Death Girl

Death Girl seen from another angle.

As Death Girl, she takes the form of a young pale and fairy attractive woman with dark blue hair, earrings and clothes. Though they cannot be seen in the music video, she also wears high heels.

At certain points she also changes form slightly, modifying her face to that of a skull or a screaming Neanderthal. The pilot near the end of the music video with the skull face is likely also one of her many forms.

Personality[]

Death Girl is a malicious entity that has been present since the dawn of planet Earth, perhaps even before that. She was, in some way, involved in the birth of life on Earth, including humanity whom she has since watched wreak havoc and massacre everything on their path, loving every second of it.

Though she likely had the powers to intervene and do something about it, she chose to sit back, relax and enjoy the show, all the way to the humans destroying themselves and the entire planet, with a wicked smile and great delight all throughout history.

Near the end of the music video, one of the pilots responsible for bombing a village tears his oxygen mask, revealing a skull face which proceeds to laugh. This is most likely one of Death Girl's many forms, and some theorize that Death Girl actually lives through all who kill or cause death (and she influences their every action), which evidently greatly satisfies her.

The short scene where she kisses a human skull demonstrates her love for death, and as death herself, this could be interpreted as a sign of arrogance or self-love.

Biography[]

"Do the Evolution" starts in space, from the point of view of a meteor passing by Saturn and closing in on Earth where it finally crashes, but not before the Earth flashes for a few frames, turning into an ovum. As the meteor crashes, causing a huge explosion, Death Girl's smiling face appears for a moment, signifying the beginning of death on Earth. Her face flashes a few more times as the ovum is fertilized by a spermatozoon, and the first microorganisms on the planet can be seen multiplying into the first small and large animals, from sea scorpions to dinosaurs.

Similar flashes occur as the dinosaurs go extinct, though Death Girl is not present.

The first humanoids appear, and evolve into bigger and more brutal versions of themselves, bullying their weaker or less intelligent ancestors. This is when Death Girl first appears, playing peekaboo on the viewer and laughing. Her laughing face switches to that of a homo sapiens also laughing (three homo sapiens had previously been seen laughing after throwing rocks at a Neanderthal), which then turns into a knight from the Crusades, ready for battle, and the shape of the knight's helmet's opening turns into a cross, where a KKK group is burning one of their victims.

The music video jumps forward to modern time, with a man jumping off a building and committing suicide, splattering into the pavement. The man's blood becomes Death Girl's red lips, and she blows a kiss at the viewer.

We see more of mankind's atrocities, such as the evolution of Neanderthals into evil lone sharks, multiple people committing suicide, the creation of swords, the destruction of nature, the birth of tanks, books being burned, Nazis and their internment camps. At the end of this sequence, Death Girl, pointing fingers at the viewer while wearing a soldier's helmet.

A group of Neanderthals dancing around a fire can be seen, and images of Death Girl's lips kissing the viewer flash into the screen, with the exception of a single, hidden frame where her eyes turn into a screaming mouth and then a lot of blood, the same screaming mouth and blood from the suicidal man from before. Like the Neanderthals, Death Girl dances, with the lights flickering on and off, occasionally showing her true guise, or at least a skull for a face better representing what she is.

A guillotine slides down, decapitating an unseen man or woman, a whale is hunted and killed with a harpoon, more weapons are built and slaves can be seen carrying the chunks forming the great structures of the Roman empire. A field of crucified people becomes a box of crucifix figures sold by a strange man on the streets, Native Americans dance around a fire (similar to the Neanderthals) and the coming of the Europeans brings disease and death to them. More advanced weapons and entire factories full of pollution are created, proudly observed by those who own it. Death Girl is seen kissing a skull in the "lips".

Nature is destroyed to make way for streets and skyscrapers, a man is scared as he waits in the electric chair, and it's followed by a quick set of individuals, such as a judge, an army official, a priest and a politician, the last of which appears to be nothing but a puppet, whose strings are being pulled by white, skeletal hands from behind.

A sudden change of scenery to a much nicer place, with a girl running through a field and stepping on an ant hill, changing the scene to an exploding mine and some trench warfare from World War 1. Cannons are fired and entire trenches with people destroyed, buried and forgotten.

A man with long fingernails and dark robes empties a can of naked, small people into a dog bowl. One little man tries to escape, but the dog ravages the people within without a second thought. A group of homeless men are seen dancing around a fire barrel the same way the Neanderthals and Native Americans were. A woman is kidnapped, a poor chimpanzee is experimented on by doctors with scalpels and pincers as it cuts to the man in the electric chair and even more suddenly, Death Girl shaking her head, at one point transforming her face into that of a Neanderthal.

A village is bombed, leaving a single baby to cry and crawl alone in their home now set ablaze. The pilot of one of these bombers tears their oxygen mask off, revealing a skull face which proceeds to laugh. A man is seen whipping a black man and a KKK group dance around a fire, once again in a similar fashion to the Neanderthals, the Native Americans and the homeless men.

In the near or distant future, a man on a computer is surprised by cables sprouting out of his keyboard and entering his ears and mouth, forcing him to stay in his cubicle. His fellow workers have suffered the same fate, but the cubicles now spread as far as the eye can see, into a world of factories and nothing else. A giant machine in the shape of a woman with her legs spread out as though she were giving birth creates several babies, going down in a conveyor belt, with each baby being marked with what appears to be a barcode. A fat man in his underpants sits at home, getting off on a virtual reality simulation of himself beating up a woman.

A pod of whales is devoured by a giant mechanical worm which emerges from the Earth, but this is just one of many worms destroying nature around a "Terror City", so more technology and pollution can take its place. Several images flash into the screen, showing past events, such as the mass extinction of the dinosaurs, the Old World spreading diseases to the New World, whaling, and Death Girl can be seen emerging from a trench, watching a village on fire in front of fire. She merely shrugs and keeps smiling.

Do the Evolution - The End

Stealth bombers nuke a city, dropping bombs powerful enough to destroy huge quantities of the Earth. Death Girl observes this. Her iris turns into the ruined Earth, which flashes into an ovum for a second as it did at the beginning of the music video, suggesting a rebirth and the perpetuation of the human condition, but for now, what remains of humanity and life on Earth as a whole is left in pieces.

Trivia[]

  • Death Girl greatly resembles Death of the Endless. Since Do the Evolution's co-director and animator Todd McFarlane was at that point in friendly terms with Neil Gaiman (Death of the Endless' creator), Death Girl may have been a nod to that (though she was designed by Brad Coombs).
  • Pearl Jam's "Do The Evolution" is meant to criticize humanity, mocking the economic, social, political, and religious systems throughout history. The song's ideal is to show how the "progressive" animal, us humans, can be the same cursed being that repeats the same destructive errors in all the times and may condemn Earth into doom. And at the center of it all, is Death Girl.
