“ | You may have fooled Quinn, but not me. Now you better start to heal him for real this time, or you'll be joining you old friend Edgar. | „ |
~ Declan threatening Veil. |
Declan is a supporting antagonist in the AMC series Into the Badlands.
He is Quinn's new Regent and one of the Clippers who remained by his side following his loss of position as Baron. As Quinn's Regent, he aids him in his quest to get revenge on his son Ryder and completely take over by killing all of the other Barons, thus dismantling the current system of the Badlands.
He was portrayed by Karl Shiels.
Personality[]
As one of Quinn's most trusted Clippers and Regent, Declan was shown to be ruthlessly determined in his mission to aid Quinn. This was displayed best in his fierce loyalty, as he was suspicious of Veil's "treatment" of Quinn's brain tumor, which was not actually helping him at all, and instead speeding up his death. Upon learning that Veil had killed Edgar, Declan was outraged, suggesting he had a strong sense of comradery with his Clippers. When Veil attempted to lie and say that Edgar tried to force himself on her, Declan outright told her that the only reason he wouldn't kill her for such a lie was that she could actually treat Quinn and prolong his lifespan. Declan also showed respect for Lydia, giving her a holy totem right as he was about to execute her, and wishing her luck in the next life, showing that he was not outright sadistic towards the people he killed.
Biography[]
Attack on the Conclave[]
Following Baron Quinn being fatally injured by his former Regent Sunny, he was presumed dead and his son Ryder took over his territory. In reality, Quinn was saved by Veil, and went into hiding with her and a large group of Clippers who were still loyal to him, one of which being Declan, who became Quinn's new Regent. Together, Quinn and Declan planned an attack on the other Barons, and found the perfect opportunity to do so when Ryder called a Conclave, a meeting between all Barons. Ryder did this in order to defend his claim to the oil fields, which was being contested by rival Baron the Widow. Quinn and Declan plan an attack on the Conclave, with the intention of killing as many Barons as possible. The plan is put into motion successfully, as they send in a spy named Gabriel to pose as a Cog worker and let Quinn and his forces in. This works flawlessly, and Quinn and Declan attack the other Barons, all of which manage to get away except for Ryder. Quinn kills Ryder, but suffers a breakdown after realizing he has killed his own son, prompting Declan to lead him away, realizing he is no longer in a proper state to lead. Declan also realizes that Quinn has become unstable when he started hallucinating Ryder, and leads him back to the bunker, where he gives him opium to try and ease his tumor and deteriorating mental state.
War for the Badlands[]
After Quinn is safely secured in the bunker, Declan discovers that Edgar, the Clipper left behind to watch Veil and her newborn son Henry is dead, with the door to the bunker locked from the inside. Declan ties up Veil, knowing she must be the culprit in Edgar's death. Veil claims she had no choice to kill him, as he attacked her. Declan is angered by this, telling Veil that Edgar would never harm a woman, unless it was in self defense, meaning Veil must have attacked him. Veil attempts to lie and say that Edgar tried to force himself onto her, which only further enrages Declan, who informs Veil that Edgar was gay, and would have no interest in her. Declan then reveals that he knows Veil hasn't really been treating Quinn's tumor, and pulls out an x-ray of Quinn's brain that Veil tried to hide, which shows the tumor is progressing. Declan tells Veil to actually start treating Quinn, and this time, he will be watching to make sure she really does it. Declan isn't seen again until Quinn orders his first wife Lydia to be executed, forcing her to dig her own grave before Declan kills her. Lydia tells Declan he doesn't have to kill her, prompting him to give her a holy totem, saying it will give her strength in the next life beyond this one. Lydia begins to pray, but then grabs the shovel she was using to dig her grave, and swings it as Declan, cutting his throat open and killing him.
Powers & Abilities[]
- Martial Arts/Swordsmanship: Declan was shown to be highly skilled in combat, befitting his position of Regent, being capable of taking down several Clippers at once during the attack on the Conclave.
- Leadership: As Regent, Declan led an entire army of Clippers under Quinn, and was shown capable of leading Quinn's followers whenever Quinn's tumor rendered him unable to do so.
Trivia[]
- Declan is the only Clipper in the series suggested to have some religious affiliation, as seen when he gave Lydia a holy totem before her execution.
