Dedan is one of the three secondary antagonists and the first Guardian that The Batter must face in the 2008 video game OFF and its 2025 remake. He is an abrasive, cold-hearted figure who rules over his Zone with a literal iron fist.
Biography[]
Past[]
Dedan was created by Hugo and became one of his three friends (the other two being the other Guardians). He was known by Hugo as the “Tall Mister". In the beginning, Dedan's personality was very different. Dedan used to be kind and friendly, letting Hugo wipe his tears on his coat. He notes that he had been stuck in the same day and that it's been 9 o'clock the entire time. He also says he was bitten by a cow and should stay inside as a result of this. This suggests that he was infected with mad cow disease, which would be what changed his personality into the tyrant that he was at the time of OFF.
Together the three friends of Hugo all talked about the restoration of the world (which at this point was in a post-apocalyptic state), each one making a different promise about what they would do with the Zones that they would be the Guardians of. Dedan in particular promised to make a land in which everybody will have a job and be able to contribute to make the world a better place. He also promised to take Hugo out on a pedalo ride to cheer him up.
OFF[]
In the main game, Dedan is is the Queen's inspector and also the employer of the Elsen in Zone 1. He treats the Elsen very poorly despite their timid nature, shouting at them and verbally abuses them, even refusing to help them against the dangerous spectres haunting their workplaces. It is shown that this is because of the fact that Dedan wants his people to be able to fight off the spectres without needing someone to help with that, as he says that they should just learn to deal with their problems themselves. It is also implied that despite his awful attitude, he does care for his people and wants them to be productive, even though him being easily frustrated if they make mistakes causes more harm then good.
The Batter witnessed Dedan verbally abusing an Elsen outside of the cowsheds, leading the Batter to believe that Dedan is hostile and must be purified. The Batter also mistakenly assumes Dedan is the chief of the spectres, when in reality, he is very angry about the spectres invading his zone (although he is angry all the time). When the Batter goes to see Dedan at his office in the Shachihata post office, Dedan is seen battling spectres while shouting obscenities. After he deals with said spectres, he proceeds to shout at the Batter and accuse him of being the one who brought the spectres into his Zone in the first place. He threatens to kill the Batter should he ever see him again, before teleporting away. The Batter finally confronts Dedan in his home in Alma, where they do battle. The Batter is victorious, and the Zone is purified (destroyed, because without the lifeforce of the Guardians, their Zones cease to be).
Appearance[]
Having a tall, metallic figure, Dedan resembles a human appearance-wise outside of his face (which has small, beady eyes to the sides of his head and massive teeth) and hands (which are unusually long and skinny). For clothes, he wears an army officer's coat over his bare chest, a black belt, a small pair of pants, and black boots.
Personality[]
Dedan has a short-temper, having no patience for ineptitude. He is a cruel leader, being both disdainful and vicious towards his subordinates, the Elsen, for their inability to handle spectres on their own.
Despite his obvious nastiness and wrathful behavior, Dedan does seem to care about his Zone, even if his rude and strict attitude ends up causing more harm than good.
Powers and Abilities[]
- Reality Warping: As a Guardian, Dedan was given the power to create a Zone and the authority to rule over it by the Queen and Hugo. His life force prevents the Zone from being "purified", keeping all of its inhabitants alive.
- Teleportation: Dedan can teleport from one location to another within Zone 1. This ability is useful to cut travel time, however it can not be used in combat.
- Metal body: According to a book in Zone 2's library, Dedan has a body made out of metal. He rules his Zone with an Iron fist, quite literally, and has been described as having a body made out of steel.
- Summoning Speech bubbles: Dedan can give his laughter physical form, creating speech bubbles bearing the "laughter" kanji which can aid him in combat. These speech bubbles can afflict enemies with muteness, preventing the use of any special abilities such as competences.

- Hour Hand: Afflicts an enemy with Sleep, causing the enemy to fall asleep.
- Sweep Hand: A special attack that can also afflict the enemy with Furious, forcing them to attack wildly and without any strategy.
