Shiver, Frye, and Big Man, together known as Deep Cut, are the secondary antagonists of Splatoon 3's story mode, Return of the Mammalians. They are also the game's idols, so they write songs for the game, broadcast the news, and host the Splatfests. However, behind the scenes they are a trio of scrap salvagers who frequently pillage the ruins of Alterna for profits to give back to the Splatlands.
Biography[]
Being the game's idols, they host all the Splatfests via their Anarchy Splatcast, but following the Splatoon 3 DLC, while Deep Cut hosts the Splatfests in Splatsville, Callie and Marie, the Squid Sisters, support celebrating the Splatfests back home in Inkopolis Plaza, and with the release of Side Order, Off the Hook as well back in Inkopolis Square.
In Return of the Mammalians, they are first encountered at the end of the first site. They introduce themselves to the New New Squidbeak Splatoon and announce their plans to loot all the treasure in Alterna. They believe that the heroes are trying to stop them, so they try to scare them off. On the second, fourth, and sixth sites, Agent 3 fights Frye, Shiver, and Big Man respectively. After the New Squidbeak Splatoon uses the three pieces of treasures to build a tool to cut off the fuzz near the Alterna Space Center, the tool breaks down. Deep Cut finds the team again and tries to take back the treasure one more time, but to their surprise, the New Squidbeak Splatoon tells them that the treasure is no longer needed and gives it to them. Feeling guilt for their actions, Deep Cut then joins the New Squidbeak Splatoon in their quest to stop Mr. Grizz.
Later, when asked about the reason of hunting treasures, the members of Deep Cut explain that they want to sell these treasures and use most of the earnings to help those in need in Splatsville, and the members of the New Squidbeak Splatoon begin to respect them more.

Trivia[]
- Deep Cut is a unique idol group within the Splatoon series, as they have three members instead of the usual two, have a male member, have a member that isn't related to the Inklings and Octolings, and are villainous within the game's story, though unlike Mr. Grizz, Deep Cut has good intentions.
- Deep Cut is frequently compared to the Team Rocket Trio by fans due to their fairly unserious tone, their presence of one non-humanoid member and their habit of blowing themselves up to exit a scene.
- According to a Nintendo Magazine interview with Deep Cut, the band was actually formed by Shiver and Frye when they were middle school classmates, with Big Man only joining in later due to them needing instrumentals for their songs.
- Based on the names of each of the remixes of "Anarchy Poisons", each member of Deep Cut symbolises one of the three poisons of the mind in Buddhist teaching, with Shiver symbolising the Rooster/Bird Poison (greed and obsession), Frye symbolising the Snake Poison (aversion and anger) and Big Man symbolising the Boar Poison (ignorance and misconception).
- Said traits are exemplified by them in the song "Big Betrayal" after Big Man secretly collaborates with the Squid Sisters: Frye, representing anger, is the first one to scold Big Man and even beat him up, Shiver, representing greed, focuses more on receiving a cut of the profits while Big Man, representing ignorance, expresses he was unaware that his actions would stir so much trouble and tries to act dumb initially.
