JB Markowicz, better known as Defalt, is one of the secondary antagonists of the Watch Dogs franchise.
He's a ruthless, vengeful, and masked hacker-for-hire who opposes the hacktivist group DedSec; he's also the arch-enemy of Raymond "T-Bone" Kenny.
He is voiced by Adrian Burhop.
Biography[]
Background[]
Not much is known about Defalt's past or how he came to be a hacker. although that he had a brother who was on suicide watch in a mental hospital. The Northeast Blackout that Raymond Kenny caused, gave his brother the chance to escape and hung himself after he did so. While this wasn't Kenny's intention, the blackout caused 11 deaths with Defalt's brother being one of them. The loss of his brother made Defalt seek revenge against Ray and started working as an informant for Blume in order to find him.
It is also known that Defalt sought to become a member of DedSec and had a meeting with the supposed "leaders" of the group, known only as the "Council of Daves". The Daves refused to make Defalt a member however due to his occupation as a DJ, as well as his renowned identity, which Defalt refused to give up. He held a grudge against DedSec since then.
Watch Dogs[]
Defalt is first mentioned by Clara Lille when informing Aiden than there have been numerous data probes on the Bunker, mostly by Script Kiddies (novice hackers). However, she also states that Defalt's probe concerns her given Defalt's skill as a hacker. Aiden tells Clara to inform him if Defalt becomes a problem.
Later on, Defalt hacks into the Bunker and steals Iraq's blackmail from it's server, while also distracting Aiden by revealing Clara's involvement in Lena's death. T-Bone tracks Defalt to his apartment where he finds his location at a dance club called Dot ConneXion, where Defalt works as a disk jockey. Aiden infiltrates Dot ConneXion and finds that Defalt has tapped into the profiler to aim trolls and insults at Aiden. Aiden finally scopes in on Defalt through the cameras, where Defalt discreetly gives the camera, and Aiden, the finger before plunging the dance club into a blackout. Defalt then proceeds to hide under his DJ booth, while a decoy flees and sends Fixers to kill Aiden. Aiden takes down the Fixers and pursues Defalt in his car, while T-Bone hacks into Defalt's car and steals the data back. The decoy's fate is then left up to the player, Aiden can either kill him or the decoy will abandon his car and mask, and proceed to escape the vigilante. Defalt is not seen again after this.
Watch Dogs Bad Blood[]
It is confirmed in the DLC that Defalt survived the events of the main game as he is mentioned to be among the Fixers recruited by Blume to find T-Bone. T-Bone tails a Fixer back to their hideout and gains contact with Defalt, the hacker gives away his location to be an old Umeni building, where T-Bone goes to investigate.
Upon infiltrating the building, T-Bone finds horrific, electrical re-enactments of the deaths that occurred in the Northeast Blackout that T-Bone caused. The last one wearing a red Defalt mask that was hanging was thought to be a red herring, but discovers that Defalt's brother was among the eleven casualties. After escaping the building and returning to the Silo, Defalt sends Fixers to kill T-Bone, but him and Frewer are fight them off. T-Bone later tracks Defalt to an underground area, where he is then trapped in a locked room and faced with not only Defalt, but also family members of the blackout victims. Defalt tells them to vote and decide Ray's fate through their dashcams. T-Bone apologizes for causing their deaths, and states that they'll feel the same guilt that has riddled him for so many years. Three of the relatives choose to spare T-Bone, but the majority choose to view the consequences play out, much to the delight of Defalt. He would then activates ventilators to pour a lethal gas into the room, but T-Bone is able hack through Frewer's phone and re-directs the gas towards Defalt's compound at one of the air vents where he is hacking relentlessly at the computer, as soon as the gas appears, the smoke alarms have activated which alarmed Defalt who then panics as he gets trapped inside The room after his neon sign was fried and blocks him in. Defalt tries to deactivate the gas which distracts him as the room becomes more pumped with lethal volumes before furiously wrecking his laptop and desk as his webcam films him asphyxiates and then dies in his chair all while Frewer breaks into the adjacent room cleared of the gas to saves T-Bone.
Watch Dogs 2 / Rodentia Academy[]
While Defalt does not appear, a small group of strange preachers wearing the same rat masks are reported to Marcus by another DedSec member. Marcus and the group investigate and discover that they are affiliated with a larger group called Ordinate Academy who are found to have a large amount of evidence against DedSec. Marcus then proceeds to sabotage their equipment and destroy their shipments, while assuring that the group don't recruit anymore members.
During this side-mission, T-Bone is asked if he has any knowledge on how Defalt 'disappeared', which he denies having any involvement.
Watch Dogs: Legion[]
Defalt does not appear but there are references to him. If the player finds a hidden basement shows a somewhat of a party with mannequins. Defalt’s mask can be found and unlocked for the player. Despite his death, there are suggestions that he may be alive, or a copycat maybe taken his place.
Personality[]
Defalt does show to be very mocking and childish, an example being him altering the profiler in order to aim trolling insults at Aiden. It's also easy to tell that he has a big ego, with him designing his hacking to resemble his rat mask logo. Nevertheless, Defalt is an extremely talented and skilled hacker, while arrogant, he is capable of hacking into a secure facility like the Bunker and stealing information within a matter of mere minutes. His egotism and arrogance however also proves to be a major weakness, as his hacks, trolls and messages are easy to identify.
More of Defalt's personality comes to light, and he goes from childish and arrogant, to showing advanced signs of full-blown psychopathy. He has no qualm in endangering others and sending Fixers to try and kill T-Bone. He also created twisted mannequin re-enactments of the deaths caused by the Northeast Blackout in order to psychologically torture Ray, and then laughed sadistically while seeing T-Bone crush the news report of the incident in a mix of rage and heavy remorse.
However, it is also revealed that Defalt lost his brother in the blackout, which clearly caused vengeance to consume him. This does show that Defalt did love his brother despite his clear insanity. Defalt may have also been trying to get vengeance for the other relatives that lost family to the blackout, evident by how he had them judge T-Bone and choose his fate. On the other hand, this is hard to excuse his psychopathic actions and him turning the situation into a sick and twisted game.

Trivia[]
- Defalt's appearance bears an uncanny resemblance to the DJ and songwriter DeadMau5, as they both don masks while scratch-mixing. DedMau's mask resembles a mouse, while Defalt's mask resembles a rat.
- Defalt doesn't talk at all during the main Watch Dogs game. He speaks in Bad Blood, where his voice is given a synthesized and robotic tone, likely coming from his mask or some kind of audio distortion system.
- While he can be killed in the main game, Defalt still makes an appearance in Bad Blood. It is revealed that the previous Defalt was an imposter set in place for Aiden while the original hid under his DJ booth.
- It is revealed in a text session in Bad Blood that Defalt commonly hires decoys during his DJ sessions.
- He drives a customized station wagon called a Rosewood.
- In one of the mob boss' audio logs, Dermot "Lucky" Quinn wished to arrange a meeting with Defalt after terminating his association with Clara Lille.
- It is indicated that Defalt was the one who programmed the Digital Trips that appear in the main game, given that they have his symbol.
- His real name indicates that Defalt is Polish.
- Ironically, Dedsec Londoners from Watch Dogs: Legion can actually recruit DJ occupants and/or Famous Trait individuals as Operatives, despite The Daves' policy that DedSec must remain anonymous.
