Throughout my years of experience on countless battlefields, I've come to one conclusion: Weapons should only exist to kill people. There should be no excuses for this. Once someone holds in their hands a tool meant purely for killing, they have to bear the sin that comes with it. But the mobile suits of Vanadis and Ochs Earth are different! Not only do they take the lives of their opponents, but of their operators as well. This is not a tool. It is a curse! The punishment for taking a life should be imposed upon us by humans, and not machines. People must kill or be killed by people. I believe that's the minimum courtesy in the foolish act of war. When we pull the trigger ourselves we bear the burden of the life we're taking and of a sin we can never atone for. In war, or any form of murder... That's how it has to be. And our Cathedra... shall deny all Gundams.
~ Delling Rembran's infamous speech after ordering an attack on Vanadis Institute.

Delling Rembran is the overarching antagonist of Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch from Mercury, the fifthteenth installment in the Gundam franchise.

He is the president of the Benerit Group, the supervising representative of the auditing organization Cathedra, and leads a multitude of affiliate companies. He has since ascended to the position of president of the Benerit Group and chairman of Asticassia School of Technology. He is the arch-nemesis of Prospera Mercury and the father of Miorine Rembran.

He is voiced by Naoya Uchida in Japanese and Gabe Kunda in English,

Appearance[]

Delling is a tall man of advanced age who has stony-faced look and fully gray hair, clearly having been aged by his experiences. He also wears black robes.

Personality[]

Delling is a very cold, ruthless, blunt, zealous and intransigent authoritarian who is solely concerned about victory and results. He is a man very set in his ways and will not tolerate others who deviate from the way he thinks things should be, including going so far as to slaughter those involved in the GUND project. An ex-military man, he is a social darwinist with a black and white view of the world, believing that those that hold power make the rules while others have to simply remain quiet and obey. Delling is also quite inflexible when it comes to failure, being unconcerned with the companies that fail to produce satisfactory results.

Furthermore, Delling is also extremely power-hungry and arrogant, viewing himself as a king with immense political and economic power that allows him to do whatever he pleases. He is shown to be very direct and uncaring in his use of power, and entirely willing to use an explanation no more complex purely because "he decided to". In general, he doesn't care about anyone but himself, casually and callously controls and disregards people when they no longer prove useful. Additionally, Delling is an abusive parent who treats his own daughter as a prize, having suitors fight in duels at Asticassia School of Technology to earn her hand in marriage, and throughout most of the first season, he's negligent towards her.

While he has an entirely deservingly terrible relationship with his daughter, Delling has shown some care for her, albeit in a rather malformed fashion. When Plant Quetta is attacked, he proves this when he instinctively shields Miorine with his own body to save her life and tries to share information about a promise he and Miorine's beloved mother made before he falls into a coma.

Biography[]

While not much is known about Delling, he was in the military in some point in time. Sometime afterward, he met Notrette Rembran and married her.

Notes & Trivia[]

  • In the novelization of The Witch from Mercury, it was also shown that Delling is also responsible for Miorine and Yushura Mirzakhani's separation (due to the latter's illness) prior to the events of the TV anime.
  • He is a counterpart to Gihren Zabi from the original Mobile Suit Gundam, both being corrupt despots and looking down on those who are weak and employ colony drops as a military tactic.
