What makes me a good demoman? If I were a bad demoman, I wouldn't be sittin' here discussin' it with you, now would I?!
~ The Demoman introducing himself.
T'all you fine dandies so proud, so cocksure, prancin' about with your heads full of eyeballs: come and get me, I say! I'll be waiting on ya with a whiff of the 'ol brimstone. I'm a grim bloody fable... with an unhappy bloody end!
~ The Demoman to the audiences for his domations and his image on public.
Oh, they're goin' to have to glue you back together... in Hell!
~ The Demoman's most famous quote.

Tavish Finnegan DeGroot, also known as the Demoman, is one of the nine playable classes in the first-person shooter video game Team Fortress 2.

An African-Scottish, scrumpy-swilling, monster-bothering demolition expert from the Scottish highlands, the Demoman is one of the more versatile members of the team. Though his weapons lack pinpoint long-range accuracy, he is a powerful, if unpredictable, asset and can hold his own in just about any situation.

Due to being a profession in demolitions, the Demoman is a master of explosives, excelling at indirect mid-range combat. Armed with his Grenade launcher and Sticky bomb launcher, the Demoman uses his only good eye and knowledge of the surrounding environment for well-timed detonations that deals splash damage that sends enemies skyward, often in several pieces.

As his name implies, he excels at swift disassembly, bouncing his grenades around corners to wreak havoc on enemy sentry gun emplacements while remaining safely out of sight. His sticky bombs are a perfect tool for area denial, keeping opponents away from any carts, control points and intelligence cases he deems off-limits. His weapons are some of the most powerful, but also the most situational. He requires more thought and swift decision-making than other classes, especially when lining up his Charges and planting sticky bombs.

The Demoman, aside from being a demolitions expert, is also profession in the ways of melee combat, and several melee weapons fit for his class allows him to take the role of a melee specialist, capable of wielding a wider variety of melee weapons compared to every other class in-game, and various shields that reduce damage and allow for a charge attack that can outrun a Scout for brief periods. The Demoman claimed he leads a tortured life in Scotland.

He was voiced by Gary Schwartz, who also voiced the Heavy.

Biography[]

The Demoman was born under the name Tavish Finnegan DeGroot. His parents were Tilly DeGroot and her unnamed husband, whom both are blind. Following an unnecessary Scottish tradition amongst all highland demolition men, they abandoned the Demoman at birth until his skills in explosives could manifest. At an unknown point in time, he was eventually adopted. Unfortunately, he ended up losing his adoptive parents due to his fierce tempter and fascination with explosives, along with his plan to kill Nessie, the legendary Loch Ness monster. Because he is now an orphan, he was forced to move to the Crypt Grammar School for Orphans, where he unhappily lived for some time. However, during his time at Crypt Grammar, his skills in bomb-making drastically improved and soon enough, word of this spread far and wide.

Eventually, the Demoman's birth parents arrived at the school where they revealed to their son the cruel tradition among the Scottish demolition men. The Demoman's childhood life had ended and a new beginning for him has begun.

Sometime after being reclaimed by his parents, the Demoman, now at the age of seven, was sent out by his mother, Tilly, to find a job on Halloween, where she states that he could find one from the ghosts that appear then. Wandering about, the young Demoman stumbles across a castle where he's greeted by the wizard Merasmus. While suspicious of the young boy, he quickly decides to hire him to sweep the castle's floors for a nickel, but warns him not to gaze in a particular cursed tome. As the witching hour approaches, the Demoman notices said cursed book: the Bombinomicon, who tempts him with information about bombs. Curious about the book's content, the Demoman opens it only for the spirit within to possess the eye he peeked inside with. Merasmus is horrified by this development and, casting a spell, makes himself, the castle and Demoman's cursed eye disappear. With that, the Demoman never saw his missing eye again, but it's said that every Halloween, it could be seen haunting the nearby moors with Merasmus.

In 1968, the Demoman was hired as a mercenary to fight for either RED or BLU during the prolonged conflict known as the Gravel Wars. In the comic Bombinomicon, on Halloween night, he tells two kids, who were out trick-or-treating, the story of how he met Merasmus as well as how he lost his eye. When Demoman mentioned Merasmus' name, this caused the Soldier to immediately recognize it and he complained about the wizard's lack of dish-washing. When Merasmus revealed himself by calling out to the Soldier's that those unwashed dishes are his, the Demoman was shocked to see him after many years and the Soldier reveals to him that the wizard is his roommate.

Personality[]

Despite being a drunk, foul-mouthed brute in battle who enjoys insulting others, the Demoman is shown to be rather polite when relatively sober, being one of the more level-headed and reasonable mercenaries in the comics. Despite this, he's still shown to be perfectly alright with killing for money and has shown great degrees of sadism before.

Trivia[]

  • There were formerly theories on how the Tavish lost his left eye. As told on Monoculus page, it was confirmed that Tavish lost his eye to the Bombnomicon that possessed his left eye when he was Seven-years old. When Merasmus noticed this, he was forced to remove the possessed eye from Tavish. When the latter woke up, Merasmus together with his castle and his eye, had seemingly disappeared.
  • The Demoman is extremely sensitive about his missing left eye. In the WAR! comic, he is seen crying when he and the BLU Soldier visited the "Eye museum".
  • One of the most famous play styles of the Demoman is known as "The Demoknight".
    • A player is considered a "Demoknight" once they equip a melee sword/axe weapon and a shield, but generally also equip the Ali Baba's Wee Booties.
  • Demoman is the only class other than Medic to not use traditional fire arms.
  • Like the Sniper, both have accents that are related to the UK.
  • Demoman's catchphrase is "KA-BOOM!"
  • Demoman uses a grenade launcher as his primary weapon, a sticky bomb launcher as his secondary weapon, and a glass bottle as his melee weapon.
  • According to Valve's official Demoman description, his obsession with finding Nessie the Loch Ness Monster and explosives "cost his set" of adoptive parents.
  • In one of his Domination responses, Demoman said that Medic has a wife and he has been "shagging" her in secret (however, it was possible that this is just an insulting way to Medic, doesn't mean Medic "DID" have a wife).
  • In the comic The Naked and the Dead Medic reveals that Demoman's empty eye socket was haunted as every time he gives him a new eye, it turns into a monster every Halloween.
    • Said comic also reveals that as a result of living almost exclusively off alcohol for the past few years, Demoman's body can produce its own alcohol when starved of it, making his blood so alcoholic that when Gray Mann unleashed robots to suck the mercs' blood, they all malfunctioned from Demoman's high alcohol content.
