Demons are a hostile race of Fiends from the Dungeons & Dragons fantasy role-playing multiverse - they are normally designed for high-level adventurers but come in many different forms and levels, the most powerful of the Demons are known as Demon Lords and are virtually deity-level threats (in contrast some of the weakest Demons are capable of being defeated by mid-to-low tier mortal adventurers).

History[]

Demons are a recurring high-level antagonistic force in Dungeons & Dragons, being the Chaotic Evil opposite of the Lawful Evil Devils - whom they are at near-constant war with and thus both utilize mortal souls as a means to try and win the war, it is believed by many sources that if either Devils or Demons won the war the end of all realms would begin as the victor would finally have the power to flood all other realms with their particular branch of evil.

Demons are a type of Fiend (just like their hated enemy, the Devils) and reside in the Abyss - a realm that embodies chaotic evil, as such all inhabitants of said realm are also included towards chaotic evil behavior and ideals.

This makes Demons naturally prone to extreme violence, cruelty and malice - they delight in war, the suffering of others bring them equal joy and they desire nothing short of the destruction of all things, valuing nothing save brutal strength, which is the only means to truly control them.. even then they will quickly find ways to betray or murder those that try and command them unless they retain their strength : only the most violent, feared and murderous of Demons are thus capable of keeping lasting power within the chaotic hordes.

Demons seek out mortal souls so as to create more Demons, the more souls they can steal the more potential soldiers they can form to go into battle - they also know that this will rob the Devils of a similar supply, thus potentially bringing the Demons closer to victory in the Blood War.

The inclusion of Demons (alongside Devils) in early editions of Dragons & Dragons contributed to the false assumption by certain groups that the game was actually Satanic in nature - this panic caused Wizards of the Coast to lower the appearance / references to Demons and Devils for a short while but as of the modern edition they are back as one of the most prominent threats higher-level parties may encounter.

Various Demons[]

Alkiliths: These moss formed fiends spread across doors and windows. They use their mass to create portals to allow other demons access to whereever the alkiliths are.

Armanites: Centaur demons that were absolute war machines. They attack with hooves, claws, their sarated tails, and shot lighting from their hands.

Babaus: Humanoid demons with the cunning of a devil. They can weaken their victims just by looking at them. They are rumored to be created by the demon lord Graz'zt's blood.

Balors: Among the most powerful, power-hungry, and iconic demons in D&D, balors are tall red bat winged residents of the abyss that are commonly armed with flaming whips and elictric swords. Errtu is a notable Balor.

Bar-lguras: Orange hulking orangatans. They tend to gang up in packs to take down tougher foes and take their enemies body parts as girsly trophies.

Bulezaus: Repulsive goat headed fiends that carry stench, decay, and disease with them everywhere they go.

Chasmes: Blackish-blue mosquito fiends that produce a droning noise that kncoks their victims unconscious. They serve more powerful demons as torturers and takmasters.

Draegloths: A demon crossbread between a glabrezu and a drow. They are more rebelious than their abyssal parents.

Dretches: Short, weak, repulsive fiends that loath everything. Even themselves. They are not very smart, so they are only suitable for simple tasks. Their most effective technique is producing a poisonous cluod around them.

Dybukks: Dybbuks are flying jellyfish-like creatures that posess corpse and use them to frighten their victims before killing them.

Glabrezus: Tall red goat headed demons with four arms: two of that of a humanoid's two larger ones with crab pincers. They love to kill their enemies through temptation, like offering them treasure in a false sense of generosity.

Goristros: Huge hulking minotaurs that are big enough to wear a palanquin to carry smaller demons. While not very intelligent, they know exactly how to get in and out of their mazes.

Hezrous: Large toad demons who serve as foot soldiers. They carry a stench on their body that can poison an adventurer that is not careful.

Manes: The equivalent to a lemure. They are the base form of a soul who is dragged down to the Abyss.

Marilith: Large serpants with the top half of a human woman's body, which sports six arms that each carry a sword.

Maurezhi: Hideous ghoulish fiends that vaguely resemble elves. They can take the appearance of whoever they eat.

Maw Demons: A demonic form of mass which only have limbs, eyes, and a giant mouth for features. They exist to eat. Whatever they consume is sent to the mouth of their master, Yeenoghu.

Molydeus: The most powerful demon under a demon lord, a molydeus is a tall humanoid fien with red skin and two heads: one with that of a wolf, the other a snake. They carry a deadly weapon depending on which demon lord they serve. They are the most loyal of any demon.

Nabassus: Human sized bat fiends that are notorious for eating souls. they have no standards when it comes to soul eating. Even when it comes to other demons. For this reason alone, they are usually outcasted from their masters' homes.

Nalfeshnees: Bipedal warhogs with tiny wings on their shoulder blades that actually mange to let them fly without any problems. They have cravings for humanoid flesh and especially enjoy eating humanoids while they are still awake.

Quasits: The abyssal equivalent to an imp. They serve as familiars to demons and demon worshipers, but are far from loyal. They like to attack while invisible.

Rutterkins: Deformed warped demons that act as defenders of the Abyss. Whoever they bite undergo a terrible illness in which they eventually become an abyssal wretch.

Shadow Demons: In some cases when a demon dies in the Abyss, its essence becomes a trasnparent grey gargoyle without legs. They do not need natural sustanence to say alive. The darkness is their best ally. Especially when it comes to combat.

Shoosuvas: Large hyenas with scorpion tails created by Yeenoghu that are usually a gift to a gnoll that Yeenoghu found worthy.

Sibriexes: Hovering mounds of flesh dripping with bile. They love to add new features to everything they come across. Some features are useful, others are unfortunate deformities.

Tanarukks: When an orc is born and infused with Abyssal energy, a tanarukk is formed. They are so ruthless and vile, even orcs fear and loath them.

Vrocks: Humanoid vultures that covet treasure and to gobble up humanoid flesh.

Wastriliths: Aquatic snakes with arms and hooked claws at the end of them. They contaminate any water they contact and create waterspouts of acid.

Yochlols: Demons who solely serve Lolth, they can take the form of a female drow or a giant spider. Their true form takes that of a yellow slimy tree with a single red eye.
