Demons are the overarching antagonists of The Legend of Zelda video game franchise.
They're monstrous, usually evil beings that exude a dark aura which attracts monsters and changes animal behavior. Demons exist in every known timeline of the Zelda setting. They tend to serve under particularly powerful demons, often called Demon Kings (Japanese: 魔王, Maou).
History[]
Unified Timeline[]
Era of the Goddess Hylia[]
When the Golden Goddesses Din, Farore, and Nayru created the world to imprison Null, with it they created an omnipotent absolute wish granting object known as the Triforce that was entrusted to a Deity named Hylia. One day, Demons under the command of their king, Demise, emerged from a fissure in the land. Seeking the Triforce, the Demons slaughtered all who opposed them. To protect her people, Hylia sent the surviving Hylians along with the Triforce skyward on an outcropping of land. To further protect them, she created a cloud barrier. With her people and the Triforce safe from the Demons, Hylia united the remaining inhabitants of the surface, successfully defeating and sealing the Demon King. Knowing that her seal wouldn't last indefinitely and the absolute power of the Triforce would be required to defeat the Demon King once and for all, the Goddess gave up her immortality to be reincarnated as a mortal who could use the Triforce.
The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword[]
Thousands of years later, Hylia was reincarnated as a Hylian girl named Zelda. Intent on using her divine soul to restore the Demon King to his true form and power, Demon Lord Ghirahim pulled Zelda to the surface. With Hylia's mortal incarnation on the demon ruled surface, the Demon Lord sent the demons and monsters under his command after Zelda. Eventually, the Demon Lord succeeded in restoring the Demon King to his true power. When the Hero of the Sky defeated the Demon King, demons disappeared from the surface. During this time, a friendly demon named Batreaux lived in Skyloft and wished to become human so he wouldn't scare anyone.
Minish Legend[]
Many years later at the beginning of the Force Era, demons returned and attempted to dominate the world again. Just as all hope seemed lost, a hero known as the Hero of Men used gifts from a race of diminutive creatures known as the Picori. Using the Light Force and Picori Blade, the Hero of Men defeated the demons and sealed them in the Bound Chest, using the Picori Blade as a lock.
The Legend of Zelda: The Minish Cap[]
Roughly a century later, an evil sorcerer named Vaati used his magic to destroy the Picori Blade, believing the Bound Chest contained the Light Force. With the chest opened, demons were released on Hyrule again, becoming servants of Vaati. Upon draining half the Light Force from Princess Zelda, Vaati became a demon.
The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time[]
Upon entering the Sacred Realm and attempting to make a wish upon the Triforce, the Gerudo King Ganondorf claimed the Triforce of Power. Since he attempted to wish upon the Triforce without a balanced heart of power, wisdom, and courage, the Sacred Realm became the corrupted, demon-infested Dark World. Ganondorf himself would become the Demon King Ganon upon activating the Triforce of Power.
Downfall Timeline[]
This timeline occurs if Link is defeated and killed by Ganondorf at the end of Ocarina of Time.
Rebirth of the Demon King[]
Having claimed the Triforce of Courage from the corpse of the Hero of Time and the Triforce of Wisdom from Princess Zelda, Ganondorf now had the full Triforce in his possession. With the Triforce now in his possession, the Gerudo King was transformed into a demon of pure power, Ganon. In a plan hatched from desperation, the Sages sealed the Demon King born in front of them along with the Triforce in the Sacred Realm turned Dark World.
The Imprisoning War[]
With the location of the Triforce exposed and now public knowledge, many greedy individuals would enter the Dark World in search of it. Anyone who entered was immediately transformed into what reflected their innermost being. Since most who entered were greedy and selfish, they became demons who were incorporated into Ganon's army. When it became clear that it was only a matter of time before the demons invaded Hyrule, the King of Hyrule ordered the Sages to permanently seal off the entrance to the Dark World. Sending the Knights of Hyrule to protect the Sages, they prepared to seal off the entrance. The moment they arrived, thousands of demons poured from the corrupted Realm, leading to a war that resulted in the Knights nearly being wiped out, but buying the Sages time to seal the corrupted land, ending the war.

The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds[]

Era of Decline[]
The Legend of Zelda[]
When Ganon returned in the Era of Decline, he brought with him many demons. With said demons, he attacked Hyrule and claimed the Triforce of Power.
Zelda II: The Adventure of Link[]
Even though Ganon had been reduced to a pile of ash by Link, his demon followers remained and plotted to resurrect him. Wishing to do so by killing the hero and dowsing Ganon's ashes in the dead hero's blood.
Child Timeline[]
This is the timeline that Link returned to at the end of Ocarina of Time, where he is able to warn the Royal Family of Ganondorf's deception and have him arrested. Unfortunately, this act causes Ganondorf to gain the Triforce of Power and be banished to the Twilight Realm.
The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess[]
Using the powers granted to him by Ganondorf, Zant transformed the inhabitants of the Twilight Realm into demons known as Shadow Beasts. With an army of Shadow Beasts under his command, the self-proclaimed usurper king of the Twilight Realm invaded Hyrule.
The Legend of Zelda: Four Swords Adventures[]
After claiming the Trident of Power from the Pyramid, Ganondorf became the Demon King Ganon. Subsequently claiming the Dark Mirror from the Temple of Darkness, Ganon would use the evil mirror's power to create a demon named Shadow Link from the thoughts of his past incarnation. He then used the Trident to transform the Knights of Hyrule who guarded the Royal Jewels into demons known as Big Dark Stalfos.
Adult Timeline[]
This is the timeline that Link left behind at the end of Ocarina of Time after helping the Sages deal away Ganondorf. However, Ganondorf inevitably broke free and rampaged across Hyrule, leading to the gods flooding the entire kingdom to keep him at bay and turning it into the Great Sea.
Era of the Great Sea[]
The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker[]
During the Era of the Great Sea, Ganondorf used the Forsaken Fortress as his headquarters on the surface, which was inhabited by many demons. He also sent his forces to patrol the seas with lookout towers and submarines, as well as invade the Earth and Wind Temples.
The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass[]
A squid demon named Bellum drained the life force of his victims to gain more power.
Era of Hyrule's Rebirth[]
When Tetra, her pirates, and the Hero of Winds finally found a new land to reestablish Hyrule in, they were terrorized by demons led by a Demon King named Malladus. Said demons were at war with benevolent deities known as the Spirits of Good. When the Spirits of Good defeated Malladus, they sealed him underground, using the Tower of Spirits and Spirit Tracks as a lock and shackles.
The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks[]
A century later, a demon servant of Malladus named Cole was the chancellor of New Hyrule and plotted to free his master with the help of Byrne.
Converged Timeline[]
During the founding of the new kingdom of Hyrule, its people were terrorized by demons. To counter this threat, the new kingdom's first monarch, King Rauru and his wife Queen Sonia traveled the world to defeat the demons, building structures known as Shrines of Light wherever one was defeated to ensure that it would never return. Some time after this, Ganondorf rose to prominence as the king of the Gerudo people. At some point, he acquired the ability to create and control Phantom Ganon. As he swore false allegiance to King Rauru, a time-displaced Princess Zelda from the post-Calamity Hyrule observed him. Growing suspicious, Zelda hatched a plan to intercept him, unaware that her actions would ensure that the events of her own time period would come to pass. When Phantom Ganon attempted to assassinate Queen Sonia, Zelda intercepted the monster. Ganondorf took advantage of the opportunity to give Sonia a fatal wound from behind and steal her Secret Stone. Using the Stone, Ganondorf became the Demon King and created a demon and monster army.
The Imprisoning War of Rauru's Hyrule[]
With an army of powerful monsters and demons under his command, the Demon King waged war against Hyrule and its allies. Even with the help of the Sages, Zelda and Rauru could do nothing but watch as Ganondorf overwhelmed everything in his path. The war ended when Rauru sacrificed himself to seal the Demon King. Though the Demon King was sealed, the demons and monsters he created remained and would continue to threaten Hyrule and its people for eons to come. Unbeknownst to Ganondorf, Zelda would take advantage of the closed time loop to turn herself into an immortal dragon, allowing her to instill the Master Sword with enough divine power to withstand him millennia later.
Calamity Ganon[]
With the Demon King sealed, the demons he created weakened, some species even disappearing although. Even with the Demon King sealed, his hatred and malice remained. Said hatred and malice would eventually manifest itself as a demon known as Calamity Ganon, who would be sealed and return many times over the ages.
Era of Prosperity[]
In preparation for the return of Calamity Ganon, the technologically advanced Shiekah created magical war robots known Guardians (among them the Battle-Tested Guardian) and massive technologically advanced animal mechas known as Divine Beasts. When Calamity Ganon returned, the demon was defeated and sealed by an ancient princess with the blood of Hylia and hero chosen by the Master Sword with the help of the Guardians and Divine Beasts. Following this victory, hyruleans began fearing the Shiekah technology. As such, the monarch ordered it all be buried. While most Shiekah accepted the order, some didn't, betraying Hyrule and forming a group loyal to Calamity Ganon, the Yiga Clan.
Great Calamity[]
