Demons are a recurring hostile species in Ultrakill. Formed from Hell Energy being forced into a stony shell, they serve as guardians for the infernal realm they spawned from. While stated to be more intelligent than husks, they are still seen as being less capable of complex thought compared to other species. When using the Terminal, they are labelled with a green background.

Anatomy[]

Demons all have stone-like shells that represent some sort of human anatomy, with all Lesser Demons being fully comprised of these shells. Meanwhile, Greater and Supreme have exposed flesh and more contorted shapes in their anatomy, like the Hideous Mass having several dozen faces and the Leviathan having several hundreds of hands along its tentacles.

Biography[]

Seemingly generated by Hell itself, demons are created when Hell Energy merges together inside of a shell, granting the greater being some level of intelligence. Most of them are bosses that end up as common enemies, and only the Leviathan is a unique boss.

Cerberi[]

First Appearance - 0-5: "Cerberus"

Main article: Cerberi

Idols[]

First Appearance - 5-2: "Waves of the Starless Sea"

Idols are small, unmoving stone statues that depict a hooded mother carrying a child, having been created by the Ferrymen in tribute of Gabriel. While they do not attack directly, they are capable of shining a beam of light on specific demons to make them invincible. This same divine light also grants the Ferrymen special abilities, as being exposed to it has allowed them to better protect their allies from harm.

Mannequins[]

First Appearance - 7-1: "Garden of Forking Paths"

Mannequins are tall, humanoid creatures with white, blood-stained bodies. Their arm and leg joints are hands holding other hands, while their faces are noticeably upside down. Similar to Cerberi, not all Mannequins are hostile, with some peacefully existing as part of the background. When hostile, however, they crawl around at breakneck speeds, in stark contrast to lesser demons encountered previously. At melee range, they attack in quick, advancing two-hit combos. They can also fire homing projectiles and cling to the walls and ceiling like spiders. They are common enemies seen throughout the Violence layer.

Mannequins are formed from the bodies of sinners who attempted to escape the Violence layer and fell asleep in exhaustion while attempting to navigate the unending, brilliant white halls of the Garden of Forking Paths. As they slept, they would be torn apart joint by joint, their broken limbs shoved into hollow statues. Now as the flesh and blood of Mannequins, the sinners who compose them exist in perpetual agony, being unable to control their own bodies and forced to carry out the same punishment to other unfortunate sinners.

UNKNOWN. NO DATA.

...

The Minotaur is an aberration of stone and flesh in the vague shape of a bull, encountered in various capacities throughout the Garden of Forking Paths. It is encountered first as a passerby, bursting through a door and running over several Mannequins as it tries desperately to escape the unending halls of the Garden. It is later encountered as a boss near the end of the level, first fought on a cramped platform made up of trams and then bursting through the wall of the tram station for a climactic round two.

The Minotaur was sculpted by ████ ██████ as a gift for the then Judge of Hell, Minos, who saw it as a caricature of his past mistakes. He would cast it into the Garden of Forking Paths in the hopes it was never seen again. Doomed to forever wander the labyrinth in search of an exit, its only wish is to see the sky one last time.

Trivia[]

  • In general, demons in ULTRAKILL appear as parodies and bastardizations of famous artwork and sculptures.
  • The Mannequins' common trope of only moving (in this case, changing poses) when the player (or a character) isn't looking at them could be a reference to monsters such as Boos, Weeping Angels, and/or SCP-173, as they share the same gimmick of their movement.
  • The Minotaur is a reference to the Minotaur from Mark Z. Danielewski's novel, House of Leaves. Both have their names and any information on them crossed out and colored in red.
