~ Dendybar to Entreri. |
Dendybar the Mottled is a minor antagonist of The Legend of Drizzt, serving as one of the three overarching antagonists of The Crystal Shard and Streams of Silver (along with the Crenshinibon and Pasha Pook). He is a member The Arcane Brotherhood who had his superior, Morkai, killed, in order to take his position and become master of the Northern Tower of the Host Tower of the Arcane. As Overwizard, he then set out to obtain an artifact of great power called the Crenshinibon, an artifact he thought was in the possession of dark elf Drizzt Do'Urden. He was later killed by the ghost of Morkai. Dendybar was the mentor of Sydney and the creator of Bok the flesh golem.
Appearance[]
By the time of his death, Dendybar was an old and thin man, with no hair on his head and a short beard. He always wore a long cloak to show that he was a wizard.
Personality[]
Dendybar was power-hungry and conniving. He was very manipulative, making deals he had no intention of holding up his end of the bargain on, and betraying allies in a heartbeat if it was led to his personal gain. It was perhaps because of this that he put very little trust in his servants, setting up multiple measures to prevent them from betraying him.
Like many wizards, Dendybar was arrogant of his power, and felt intense jealousy at those who grew more powerful than him. However, he was a pragmatist, and did not let vengeance or anger influence his decisions. Despite this, he was not above mocking his opponents when he was certain he had defeated them and losing his temper at perceived insolence.
Biography[]
Working under Morkai[]
Initially, Dendybar was a worshipper of the god of the dead Myrkul, working as a priest. However, at some point he decided that he could better serve his god as a wizard and joined the Arcane Brotherhood.
Dendybar was positioned under the Overwizard of the Northern tower Morkai the Red. However, he was not satisfied with his position and plotted with fellow wizard Eldeluc to kill their master. On a trip to Icewind Dale, they manipulated Morkai's apprentice Akar Kessell into killing his mentor, promising to make him Overwizard of the northern tower if he did. Kessell committed the crime, and Dendybar betrayed him and left him to die in the freezing, desolate, monster filled Icewind Dale.
As Overwizard of the Northern Tower[]
Upon his return to Luskan, Dendybar was given control over the Northern Tower. However, to his anger, Eldeluc went even higher, becoming a lieutenant to Arklem Greeth himself.
During his time as Overwizard, Dendybar took on an apprentice, the ambitous Sydney. He also created a powerful flesh golem named Bok. At some point, he got word that Akar Kessell had in fact survived his betrayal with the help of a powerful artifact known as the Crenshinibon. With it, the boy had raised a powerful army and nearly taken over all of Icewind Dale. Dendybar wondered how much power the Crenshinibon would give him, if someone as weak as Akar Kessell could become so powerful. He set out to obtain the artifact and gain its power.
Dendybar discovered that the last person to see Kessell alive was rogue drow Drizzt Do'Urden, and began hunting the drow to see if he had the Crenshinibon. When Drizzt and his friends entered Luskan, Dendybar's agents failed to capture them, which did not perturb the old wizard.
As he set out to discover where the dark elf and his friends were, Dendybar summoned the spirit of Morkai the Red, something he had done on a regular basis since instigating the man's murder. Since Dendybar was the summoner, Morkai had to follow his instruction despite despising him. Dendybar asked the spirit to find information on Drizzt. Morkai later informed him of a man named Artemis Entreri, who also hunted the group.
When Artemis Entreri entered Luskan, Dendybar had his servants bring him to the Norther Tower. There, Entreri explained that he was hunting a halfling named Regis who was travelling with Drizzt. The two agreed to help each other catch and defeat the company, with Dendybar capturing Drizzt and Entreri capturing Regis.
Over the next few weeks, Dendybar searched for Drizzt's group and sought to discover the intention of their journey. In doing so, he summoned Morkai more frequently than was safe, since if you summoned the same spirit too much in a short period of time, it could be freed from your will and turn against you. Eventually, with the help of Morkai and one of Sydney's sources, they discovered that the company was seeking the ancient dwarven homeland of Mithral Hall. With this information, he sent Sydney, Bok, and a soldier named Jeirdan off the find the group and kill everyone in it except for the halfling and Drizzt, who were to be taken alive. Entreri went with them.
Over the next few months, Dendybar waited in his tower for his servant's return. Eventually, he discovered the location of Mithral Hall with the help of Morkai and travelled there himself. There, he found Sydney and Bok dead, and Entreri and Jeirdan gone. No member of Drizzt's group was anywhere to be found. Annoyed but not defeated, Dendybar reanimated Bok and set out to find Drizzt and the Crenshinibon on his own. However, first he summoned Morkai, to force him to tell him what had happened to his agents. However, having summoned the dead wizard one to many times, Morkai possessed Bok and had him strangle Dendybar, killing him.
Powers and Abilities[]
Dendybar was a proficient wizard, able to earn his high ranking in the Arcane Brotherhood. In addition to this, his devotion to the Death God Myrkul allowed him to animate skeletons and zombies. He was also fairly intelligent and very manipulative.
Trivia[]
- Despite being responsible for many of the events that take place during The Icewind Dale Trilogy, Dendybar the Mottled never actually meets the trilogy's protagonist, Drizzt Do'Urden.
