Denlinger is a supporting antagonist in the 2023 spy action film Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One, the seventh installment of the Mission: Impossible film series.
He is the corrupt US Director of National Intelligence and an apparent ally of former IMF director Eugene Kittridge. Sometime prior to the film's events, however, Denlinger was one of the designers of The Entity, an AI program meant to target Russia before going rogue.
He was portrayed by Cary Elwes, who also played William Boone in Rudyard Kipling's The Jungle Book, Dr. Jonas Miller in Twister, Donald Curtis in the English dub of Porco Rosso, Casanova in Kiss the Girls, Paxton Powers in Batman Beyond, Ted Bundy in The Riverman, Lawrence Gordon in the Saw franchise, Sir Edgar in Ella Enchanted, Aquaman in Justice League: The Flashpoint Paradox and Larry Kline in Stranger Things.
History[]
An employee of the United States of America's National Intelligence Department, Denlinger rose up through the ranks until becoming the department's director and was involved in the development of the program that would eventually evolve into The Entity. He used it to hack into the Russian Sevastopol submarine and disable its stealth cloak, only for the Entity to make contact with something inside a mysterious chamber of the submarine that caused it to become fully sentient and go completely rogue.
Some time after, Denlinger attended a meeting with Eugene Kittridge and various other officials in the US intelligence community to discuss the emerging threat of the Entity and chart out what their response to it should be. He was critical of Kittridge after learning he had dispatched an anonymous IMF agent to recover one-half of the key.
Denlinger would later board the Orient Express train where the White Widow had arranged to sell the completed key to Kittridge. Along the way, Denlinger met with Gabriel and revealed his plans to use the Entity to take control of the US government and purge anyone who didn't share his vision of the future, before proposing they form an alliance to recover the key. However, Gabriel deduced that Denlinger would betray him, and killed him instead by slitting his throat.
