Dennis: I was out of my mind. I was consumed with no thought beyond getting my next fix. It seemed easy enough. The store had money. I had a gun. But he was moving too slow, and my brain was moving too fast. I didn't even remember pulling the trigger. He was dead before I knew there was another person in the store. I woke up in the hospital four nights later. And that's when I found out I had killed a cop. I thought they would come for me, but they never did.
Athena: You could've turned yourself in.
Dennis: I told myself that God had given me another chance. And I took it. I got clean, and I went to church... And I tried to live a life of service. I tried to live a life in service. For the life I took.
~ Dennis talking to Athena about him murdering Emmett.

Dennis Jenkins is a major character in the TV series 9-1-1.

He is a former drug addicted criminal, and the killer of Athena's late fiancé, Officer Emmett Washington. He spent thirty years getting away with his crime, during which he got clean, had a family, and became a youth pastor.

In 2019, he is finally caught by Athena and sent to prison. Five years later, however, the FBI makes a deal with him for early release, in exchange for testifying against a group of sex traffickers.

He is portrayed by Glenn Plummer, who also played Jimmy Sensio in Dexter.

Biography[]

In 1991, while high on drugs one night, Dennis brought a gun to rob a convenience store and shot officer Emmett Washington (Athena's fiancé), killing him. Instead of turning himself in, he fled the scene and the case went unsolved for three decades.

After some time passed, Dennis saw the event as a second chance to live better and got clean from drugs, marry and have a family, become a member of church, and even won several awards for helping at-risk kids. However, he never forgot Emmett and had memorized his obituary, learning he left behind his mother and fiancé.

Athena Begins[]

After spending 30 years investigating Emmett's murder, Athena uncovers the truth when Dennis' gun is found and tracks down his home address. She visits Dennis at home, where he is with his family, but he quickly dismisses them. He realizes she is a cop and shares that he works as an advocate for at-risk kids, asking if any of them need help. However, she informs him that she is there about the robbery in '91, and he understands the gravity of the situation, inviting her inside.

Dennis recognizes her as Athena Carter, Emmett's fiancée. She confirms her identity and demands to know what led to Emmett's murder. He explains his past and the circumstances surrounding the murder, detailing how he has chosen to redeem himself by helping at-risk kids over the years.

Athena acknowledges the impressive life he has built but cannot overlook that it was constructed on the suffering of a dead man. Dennis agrees and decides to face the consequences, telling her he will take responsibility. He shares the news with his family during a final loving moment before telling Athena he is ready. She handcuffs him and takes him to the station, where she watches him confess before he is officially processed for his crimes.

Later that day, Athena visits Tina Washington, Emmett's mother, to inform her about the arrest. Tina breaks down in tears of joy as she embraces Athena.

Buzzkill[]

Five years later, Athena is informed is that the FBI has made a deal with to Dennis for early release. In exchange, he will testify against the associates of his late cellmate Maxwell Fulton, a notorious sex trafficker. However, Dennis wants Athena to escort him from Phoenix to L.A.. Captain Maynard convinces a reluctant Athena to take the job.

Athena travels to Texas and picks Dennis up. On the way to the airport, he tells Athena that someone is trying to kill him. They are stopped by a man who claims to be AUSA Fredericks, and who presents forged papers to have Dennis placed into his custody. Athena locks Fredericks up in his own car.

At the airport, Athena switches their tickets and they end up taking a different plane for safety reasons. She also calls Maynard and asks her to have the local police get the fake cop. On the plane, Athena asks to speak to the captain. However, a swarm of bees hit a nearby small plane, which in turn hits the plane Athena and Dennis are on.

When The Being Gets Tough…[]

In a flashback before the plane collision, Dennis explains to Athena that the US attorney's office made him a deal to switch prisons and get close to Maxwell Fulton. Maxwell told Dennis about his secret library, where he hid multiple videos of his customers. Some of said customers want Dennis dead before he can reveal the library's location.

In the present, the co-pilot loses consciousness as the plane begins to descend rapidly. Athena calls 9-1-1 for assistance. An air traffic controller provides her with flying instructions, while a young boy named Gem steps in to help her. Unfortunately, the autopilot disconnects. Gem assumes the role of co-pilot and manages to avert disaster. Meanwhile, the co-pilot regains consciousness but suffers a heart attack, prompting Athena to perform CPR on him.

Amidst the turmoil, Dennis advises Athena to confide in someone she trusts about Max’s libraries. She considers reaching out to Bobby but fails to get in touch.

Simultaneously, DEA officers confront Maynard after discovering that Athena and Dennis did not board their flight. Unsure of who to trust, Maynard chooses to remain silent about the incident. She attempts to call Athena but cannot reach her. The DEA officers threaten to revoke the badges of Elaine and Athena unless Dennis is delivered within an hour.

Final Approach[]

Eventually, Athena and Gem are able to land the plane safely. After everyone is rescued, the DEA officers arrive to apprehend Dennis. However, Athena asks Bobby to divert them. Bobby tells the agents that Athena and Dennis are heading to the hospital. Athena calls Maynard and discovers that Fredericks has escaped, and that there's no one in the U.S. attorney's office named Fredericks. Athena takes Bobby and Dennis to search for Max’s library.

Dennis leads them to the airport, where Max has hidden the library in his car parked in the garage. They successfully retrieve the black book containing QR codes, that show several key figures in incriminating moments. Suddenly, AUSA Spencer appears and threatens to shoot Bobby for the book. Dennis takes a bullet for Bobby, and Athena arrests the corrupt Attorney after Dennis subdues him. It turns out that Spencer wanted the black book because his name is in it, leading to the operation.

After surgery, Athena gives Dennis her blessing to accept the deal and return to his family, even though she still struggles to forgive him. Dennis vows to be a better man from now on.
