Derek Olson is the secondary antagonist in the 2002 film The Sum of All Fears. He is a African arms dealer who specializes in handing out equipment for terrorists to use.
He was portrayed by Colm Feore, who also played Zhylaw in The Chronicles of Riddick.
Biography[]
Derek Olson is a greedy arms dealer based in Africa. Olson already has been involved in handing over bombs, missiles, etc to terrorists around the globe which results in millions dying in countries. Olson discovers a Israeli nuclear bomb thought to be lost long ago, after some Syrians deliver it to him after finding it underground. Olson sells it for $400 thanks to one of them having a son who was sadly killed while serving as a soldier during a battle. In actuality, Olson types a message to Richard Dressler on the computer about it and gives it to him for $5,000,000.
Because of Olson, a football stadium filled with thousands of innocents gets nuked in Baltimore, Massachusetts: including the director of the CIA William Cabot. Olson’s stroke is to hide away in a protective bunker as the world goes to shit, with Dressler intending to frame Russia for the attack by having an aircraft carrier taken down and cause nuclear war with the United States so that they will be exterminated as Europe under a tyrannical dictatorship seize control of the planet.
Olson is ultimately stopped by novice analyst Jack Ryan exposing the plans, including Olson and Dressler’s deal to the U.S. president Robert “Bob” Fowler and Russian president Nemerov. Ryan interrogates the seller and is shown a photo of Olson chatting with another person to which he happily gives. Olson’s files are leaked and he is finished off by John Clark, who slits his throat as he’s relaxing and chilling to classical music on his headphones.
