~ Derick holding Negan at gunpoint and forcing him to dig his own grave.
Derick is an antagonist in Image Comics, The Walking Dead, being the main antagonist of the short, "Negan Lives"
He is a middle-aged Caucasian man with medium long, brown hair which waves to the right side of his head. He also noticeable facial hair, long sideburns, and a short mullet. He is usually seen with an irritated expression on his face.
He wears a striped button-down t shirt and black pants, while also wearing a rifle sling across his torso and shoulders.
Personality[]
Derick is presented as a cruel, hardened, and violent man that does whatever he needs to do in order to survive. But he is notably more sadistic and coldhearted compared to his fellow bandits. Forcing Negan to dig his own grave and started laughing at Negan’s story regarding his deceased wife.
Derick is also noticed to be very disloyal to even his own allies. As he was ready to kill Lucy for sympathizing with one of their victims, showing that he accepted the harsh world around him and that he doesn’t care about “soft” anymore.
Story[]
Past[]
Nothing is known about Derick’s life before the apocalypse happened, only that he could’ve already been living in the State of Virginia.
Once the Global Outbreak happened, Derick would eventually come to meet Barry and Lucy. To whom he would start a bandit group with. They began using Lucy as a way to seduce lone survivors. With Derick and Barry then ambushing the victim, killing them, and stealing their supplies. Which seemingly made Derick into cruel and cynical thug.
Negan Lives[]
Over four years into the outbreak. Derick and his group noticed a lone man in the neighborhood of Springhaven within Virginia. They then sent out Lucy to seduce Negan and earn his trust.
During the middle of the night, Lucy and Negan are eating outside, with Derick and Barry keeping watch from afar, remaining unseen. Suddenly, Negan breaks the tensions with Lucy, being fully aware that she’s distracting him for an ambush. Then, Derick and Barry launch towards Negan, with Barry beginning to choke him to death. But when Lucy yells at him to stop, claiming that Negan is a nice man who deserves to live, Derick gets irritated. He states that she shouldn’t still be this soft after how many times they’ve done this. Derick then gets annoyed at Barry’s failure in killing Negan. Negan angrily insults them and claims that he’s barely even fighting back. This results in Derick deciding to make Negan dig his own grave.
Derick is seen sitting down next to Lucy, while holding Negan at gunpoint. He forces Negan to dig up the grave that was already present in the garden, and while Negan goes along with it. He begins begging Derick to not make him do it, as he doesn’t want to Lucille to be dug up. Derick reacts unsympathetically, stating that despite gunshots causing lots of attraction from Walkers, Derick is still going to kill Negan by the bullet. Specifically, so he can watch him bleed to death, all because Negan happened to inconvenience Derick. Negan, having changed his mind, decides to let Derick shoot him on the spot. But Derick then proceeds to aim the gun at Lucy, shocking both her and Barry. Derick tells his associate that he’s tired of being around Lucy’s softness and knowing that Negan cares for her. Derick threatens Lucy’s life in order to keep Negan to dig his own grave, which he then reluctantly proceeds with. Derick asks Negan why he was so hesitant to dig up the person laying in the grave, only for Negan to tell him that it isn’t a person, but a baseball bat. Causing Derick to mockingly state that this story is something he’s got to hear.
Derick proceeds to listen at Negan’s story surrounding the death of his wife Lucille, and how he decided to name his baseball bat after her, so him burying the object, made him feel like he buried his deceased wife. Derick, however, cruelly laughs at his story and states; “That’s about the stupidest shit I’ve ever heard!”
Out of nowhere, numerous zombies ambush the group from the surrounding darkness. With Barry immediately being bitten and devoured, much to Derick’s shock. Derick falls to the ground and clumsily tries to shoot the zombies through the head, but he is bitten by one of them on his right arm. Negan, wanting to kill Derick himself, rushes towards him, kills the Zombie, and then proceeds to brutally pierce through Derick’s torso with his shovel. Angrily yelling at him that he should’ve just killed him when he had the chance, and violently continues in trying to pierce Derick in half with the shovel, killing him.
Trivia[]
His name sounds noticeably close to the name Rick, obviously in regards to Negan's former rival, Rick Grimes.
