Derrick the Executioner is a minor antagonist and the first boss fought in Nioh. He is the brutal executioner of the Tower of London.
He was voiced by James Clyde.
Appearance[]
In his first form, Derrick keeps his appearance hidden underneath a uniform of black leather, consisting of a hood, gloves, and outfit. His mouth is stitched shut with string holding his lips together. He also has cuffs on his wrists and chains around his shoulder.
After being injected with Amrita, Derrick mutates into a humanoid monster with numerous red spikes protruding across his arms, back, and head. His eyes glow red and his skin turns dark purple, bearing tattoos markings on his chest and arms.
Personality[]
Derrick is a brutal man to the core, and his position of executioner made him more and more violent as he executed prisoners. Despite his position, Derrick shows no signs of emotion or intelligence.
Biography[]
Derrick once committed a crime heinous enough to be sentenced to death, but he was pardoned on the condition that he served as the executioner of the Tower of London. Over the years he served as executioner, Derrick ended the lives of 3,000 people, including politicians and dissidents. While he mainly decapitated his victims with his axe, he also invented hanging, showing off in public spectacles. He follows orders given to him by Edward Kelley and associates, who muted him by stitching his mouth.
William first encounters Derrick in the first chapter of the game during his attempt to escape from the Tower of London. Upon reaching a circular point overlooking the River Thames, the gate closes behind him and Derrick drops onto the arena above it. William easily defeats Derrick, but Kelley arrives and implants an Amrita crystal in Derrick's back. From the crystal's power, Derrick not only regains his strength, but mutates into a giant Yokai consumed with anger. With help from Saoirse powering his weapon, William defeats the mutated Derrick. However, this also allows Kelley to capture Saoirse while William was distracted.
Despite being defeated by William, Derrick's Yokai body never rotted away; instead, he became a savage beast roaming where instinct took it. In the game's epilogue mission, William returns to the Tower of London to confront John Dee. If William chooses to go down the stairs at the furthest shrine to a torture chamber, Derrick's Yokai form can be found. The fight is exactly the same as before, only here, Derrick hits harder and using Living Weapons no longer instantly defeat him. Should William prevail, Derrick drops his Axe of Judgement and his body can finally rest at ease.
Quotes[]
“ | Derrick is the Tower of London's executioner. He himself had committed a crime deserving the death penalty, but was pardoned on the condition that he take on his current position. He has ended the lives of over 3000 people in the years since then, including political prisoners and dissidents, in grisly public spectacles that often featured his gigantic axe. A brutal man to begin with, he grew more and more violent over the course of his duties, and although he obeys the orders of Kelley and his associates faithfully, he no longer speaks. In fact, he shows no sign of emotion or intelligence at all. As well as decapitation, he also executes people by hanging, and even invented a device for hoisting people off the ground rather than dropping them from above. His name is still used for that type of crane even in our day. | „ |
