Detective Finney is the secondary antagonist in Season 2 of the BBC psychological horror, mystery, sitcom show Psychoville. He is a psychopathic detective inspector under the payroll of Grace Andrews to find anyone relating to disappearance of Edwina Kenchington's locket.
He was portrayed by Mark Bonnar, who also voices The Eleven in Big Finish’s Doctor Who audio dramas.
Biography[]
Detective Finney was a corrupt detective on the payroll of Grace Andrews in her search for the missing locket of Nurse Kenchington and had been trying to interrogate everyone involved with her death for some time prior to season two's events. He is first seen on screen during her son Mr. Jolly's funeral where he asks Mr. Jelly, Michael Fry and Oscar Lomax if they know anything about her locket, Jelly accidentally lets slip that she did before Michael intervenes and claims she was actually showing off about her "clown's pocket" (big vagina), Finney pretends to buy this bluff before instead heading to talk to Joy Aston and the traumatised & paralyzed Jennifer. During their conversation however he kills Joy by stabbing her in the throat with one of Jennifer's pencils when she's revealed to be completely useless to the investigation, giving him virtually no information, he leaves the pencil in Jennifer's hand before mockingly asking her not to tell anyone he was there.
He is next seen interviewing actor Christopher Biggins about the location of one of his ex co-stars Robert Greenspan, only to leave upon hearing that the latter had already skipped town by this point while Biggins claimed not to know about any locket. The locket was indeed in the possession of Greenspan who was warned by Biggins that the police asked him about it, as a result Robert gives the locket to another former cast member as well as his crush Debbie Hart. Finney eventually finds Robert and lures him into a trap by setting up a fake audition, before murdering him and dumping his body in an alleyway.
Finney's next target was Tony Hancock AKA Oscar Lomax, while the latter's estranged son was preparing to meet him again with the help of Michael Fry, Finney took advantage of the latter's absence by knocking on Lomax's door, pretending to be his son Billy before killing him by hanging, staging the act as a suicide leaving Fry and Billy devastated upon discovering his body. Later as emergency services take Lomax's body off of his premises, Finney reassuringly puts a hand on Fry's shoulder before giving him a mocking smile and leaving.
Shortly after this he sneaks into a Manchester retirement home to murder Mrs. Wren, Mr. Jelly's assistant, however he accidentally gets the wrong target, killing her roommate Mrs. Price instead, thanks to Michael warming Mr. Jelly about their lives being in danger. He is then called back into the police station after officers intercepted Jeremy Goode. Due to the latter's connection with Ravenhill Hospital and Edwina Kenchington.
While at first reluctant to talk, Finney torments Goode by damaging a copy of Fifty Great Coastal Walks of The British Isles Vol. 2. Goode finally admits he was a patient at Ravenhill and how he and Kenchington worked together researching how to create life, after Goode managed to solve a mistake she made on an equation. Following this Finney intercepts makeup artist Hattie, the current owner of the locket and arrests her upon discovering that she gave the locket away to Michael and Peter Bishop whilst the two were posing as detectives.
The following day Finney arrives in Andrews' office where he informs her that his sources have confirmed to him that both Michael and Maureen Sowerbutts are dead and that Mr. Jelly and Peter Bishop are on their way to London with the locket in hand, Finney then offers to kill David for Andrews to which she gleefully accepts as a way to make her display neater and leave no loose ends.
Unfortunately for Finney however Jennifer warns David beforehand about Finney's actions and David manages to knock him unconscious before he can approach him.
When Finney awakens he finds himself stuck in the coffin of Maureen Sowerbutts, upon realising where he is, he panics and tries to break himself free however he's unable to manage this before the coffin is cremated, leaving him to get burned alive.
Personality[]
Finney is a calm, soft spoken but deadly man capable of being charming, approachable and even reassuring at one minute before immediately turning into a cold blooded, sadistic lunatic going above and beyond what he's required to do just for the thrill of it. While he's usually composed and relaxed when pushed to his limit Finney will show extreme bouts of rage and agitation, in these instances he can be seen as far more dangerous than his usual self.
While Finney definitely enjoys killing he will still keep people around if they serve his purpose or as to not blow his cover; such as Jeremy Goode who had a huge amount of information regarding Kenchington for him and Hattie who would put him at risk should he kill her in front of his fellow officers.
Appearance[]
Finney is a tall, handsome middle aged, Caucasian man with slicked back grey hair and hazel eyes. He has a very sharp dress sense, nearly always being seen in an expensive suit with black Italian shoes. On patrol he also adds a flowing blue trench coat into his apparel.
Trivia[]
- In a sense he could be argued as a dark parallel to Maureen Sowerbutts due to him sharing her love for killing out of the thrill and excitement it gives them.
- Finney is probably the most memorable of the show's main villains aside from Mr. Jolly with fans due to him being responsible for the deaths of half of the main cast.
