Detective Patera and Detective Janacek are minor antagonists in the manga and anime series Monster. They are corrupt police detectives at the Prague police station who are involved in a conspiracy to find Johan Liebert and use him to regain power in The Czech Republic.
Biography[]
Patera and Janacek are former agents in the Czech secret police, which committed atrocities before the fall of communism. They are able to get positions on the Prague police force, bribing Inspector Zeman to keep quiet about them. They later begin plotting with Zeman and former members of the secret police to find Johan, believing they can use him to regain power, presumably by overthrowing the current government and restoring communism. Patera eventually became the chief detective at the station and a superior of Jan Suk, who he and Janacek have little respect for.
When Inspector Zeman is killed while trying to torture Wolfgang Grimmer for information, Patera and Janacek try to cover up for him. When Suk suspects Grimmer killed Zeman, Patera tells him not to tell anyone and to leave Grimmer to him, as he wants to capture Grimmer himself and get the tape from him. He warns Suk not to investigate any further or he may get himself killed. Patera, who is an infamous womanizer, also learns that Suk has been meeting a young woman at a bar, who is actually Johan in disguise as his sister. One night he goes to the bar and tries to hit on Johan, telling him that Suk can't come. Johan is displeased by this and tries to leave, but Patera tries to stop him. Johan decides to dispose of Patera by giving him a bag of poisoned candy.
The next day, Suk discovers evidence in Zeman's locker implicating Patera and Janacek as corrupt cops. He reports this to Chief Hamrik, who is in league with them. Patera and Janacek meet with Hamrik and decide they underestimated Suk. They conclude that if Suk won't keep quiet they'll have to kill him. However, this plan is aborted when Patera then offers them the bag of candy, and they all eat some, and are found dead soon after.
