Detta Walker is a disassociative identity of Odetta Holmes, (later Susannah Dean), who serves as the secondary antagonist of The Drawing of Three, the second installment in Stephen King's Dark Tower series. She later combines with Odetta to form a new, better identity, Susannah Dean. However, throughout the series, Detta sometimes emerges from Susannah, particularly when Detta is needed to accomplish a task that Susannah is unable to.
Unlike Odetta, who is kind and caring, Detta is vicious, psychopathic, and hateful. She enjoys hurting people, particularly white people, who she sees as the enemy. While Odetta seeks to work together with white people, Detta only wants to hurt and kill them. Detta speaks in an exaggerated, fake, and stereotypical form of African-American English. This is due to the fact that Odetta did not grow up speaking in AAE, and her mind doesn't really know what it sounds like.
Biography[]
Creation[]
When Odetta was walking home from a wedding with her family, her father tried to hail a cab. Hpwever the cab driver refused to service them because they were black. While the family walked home, Jack Mort dropped a brick on her head from a high story. The injury led to her having disassociative identity disorder (mistakenly called schizophrenia in the novels). As Detta was created after an event of racism, she had a deep hatred of white people.
Early Life[]
Detta would pretend to be sexual with white boys and then stop in the middle. She enjoyed getting the boys to chase her. She also would shoplift in stores frequented by white people.
One day when Odetta was taking the subway, Jack Mort appeared again and pushed her onto the tracks. The train cut off her legs. On the way to the hospital, she switched rapidly between the personas of Odetta and Detta. She was left needing a wheelchair for the rest of her life.
The Drawing of Three[]
Roland Deschain opened a magic door let led from his world to New York in the sixties. he saw Detta shoplifting. Roland entered her mind and pushed her through the door. When going through the door, Roland was able to see both of her personas at once.
Once they were on the Western Shore of Roland's world, Odetta emerged. Odetta and Eddie Dean. However, Detta emerged and became violent, forcing Eddie and Roland to tie her to the wheelchair. She refused to cooperate with them and wanted to kill them. She believed they were trying to poison her and refused to eat. Detta screamed while they were trying to sleep. Roland managed to get through to Odetta and get her to stop Detta's screaming.
Odetta reemerged again. She and Eddie arrived at a new magic door. Eddie decided to give her a loaded gun, despite Roland's warnings. Eddie brought Roland to the door, but by that time, Odetta had turned back into Detta and disappeared. Once Roland left, Detta managed to get a noose around Eddie's neck and tie him up. She brought him to the water where the lobstrocities would emerge and kill him. Just as Eddie was about to die, Roland emerged and got Detta to look through the door. Detta and Odetta were forced to face each other and their personalities combined into Susannah. Susannah had the kindness of Odetta and the toughness of Detta. Susannah used her gun to shoot the lobstrocities and save Eddie.
