Devar Manigault is a minor antagonist in HBO's The Wire.
He is portrayed by Cyrus Farmer.
Biography[]
Background[]
Devar Manigault is the domestic partner of Raylene Lee, the father of her younger son Aaron "Bug" Manigault, and the stepfather of her older son Michael Lee. He molested Michael when he was around nine years old, which Raylene allowed to happen because she needed his financial support. At some point, Devar was investigated by Child Protective Services but the investigation closed because Michael was uncooperative. Michael's abuse eventually stopped when Devar was arrested and sent to prison for some crime unrelated to his abuse of Michael. While in prison, he continued to sate his depraved sexual desires by raping the other prisoners.
Season 4[]
Devar gets out early from prison and returns home, much to Michael's horror. He comments to the now fourteen-year-old Michael that he's gotten big, with the clear implication being that he's now too old for him. He shifts his focus to Bug, spending a lot of time with him and even helping him with his homework in an attempt to groom him. Michael, fully aware of what his stepfather is trying to do, goes to drug lord Marlo Stanfield for help, making a deal that he'll work for him if he kills Devar.
Marlo's head enforcers Chris Partlow and Snoop find and corner Devar, with the plan being to take him into a vacant and shoot him there. Chris, who had also been molested as a child and was likely informed by Michael that Devar is a pedophile, confronts Devar over this and gets uncharacteristically angry with him. Devar tries to deny it, but casts doubt on this claim when he admits to committing rape in prison, even if Chris didn't already know the truth. Chris snaps and viciously beats him to death, leaving Snoop shocked.
