~ Devi to Kvothe |
Devi is a major character in The Kingkiller Chronicle, by Patrick Rothfuss. She is a loan shark who uses her prodigious skill at sympathy to enforce debt collection.
Biography[]
Past[]
At some point Devi enrolled at The University. She made it to the rank of Re'lar. She was a skilled student, and boasts that her tuition was never above seven talents. She studied sympathy, alchemy, and likely other subjects. She was exceptionally skilled at sympathy, and claims to be able to do an eight part binding, and to have bested Master of Sympathy Elxa Dal.
She at one point had a history with Ambrose Jakis, thought the details are unknown. However, she has a particular hatred for him. She claims that she would kill him if she could get away with it.
At some point she was expelled, although the reason is unclear. Most assume she was expelled for malfeasance. Devi claims it was because the Masters were afraid of a woman who could defeat Elxa Dal.
The Kingkiller Chronicle[]
Kvothe went to Devi because no one else would lend him money. As collateral, she demanded a drop of Kvothe's blood. Initially he refused, but agreed when he realized he had no other choice.
Kvothe developed a friendship with Devi. When he came to borrow money, they would flirt, and he would often borrow books form her. Kvothe claimed he could find a secret entrance to the Archives, which Devi was desperate to get into.
At a certain point, Devi demanded that Kvothe needed to take out a large loan, because she wasn't interested in small loans. However, she offered to buy information about a secret entrance to the archives for an enormous amount of money. She also offered to sleep with him. However, Kvothe refused, as he was trying to protect Auri.
At some point, Ambrose hired someone to buy the recipe for an alchemist poison called Plum Bob. She was reluctant to sell it, so she made it and sold the poison directly to him. She was unaware that Ambrose was the true buyer trying to poison Kvothe to get him expelled from the University.
After Kvothe broke into Ambrose's apartments, Ambrose got a drop of his blood and started doing malfeasance against him. Kvothe originally didn't know it was Ambrose, and suspected that Devi either did the malfeasance or sold his blood. Kvothe confronted her and demanded to see his blood. Devi angrily refused, so Kvothe took a piece of her hair and bound her with sympathy. However, Devi's alar was stronger than his, and she managed to get a poorboy, a powerful energy source. Once she had it, Kvothe had no chance. Kvothe dropped the binding and Devi bound him instead. She demanded that he leave, and give her back all the money or she would sell his blood.
Kvothe told Mola what happened. As Mola was a friend of Devi, she went to explain the situation. While Devi was still angry, she agreed to help him and his friends take the mommet of Kvothe from Ambrose so he couldn't keep doing malfeasance against Kvothe. After they succeeded, Kvothe returned to her and apologized. He also pointed out that she also hurt him by selling the Plum bob. She decided to forgive him and allowed him to keep borrowing money.
Trivia[]
- Kvothe is said to have "tricked a demon" to get his hearts desire. As Devi is called a demon, this may be referring to her. Devi is desperate to get into the archives. Since she seems to have all the books she needs, it is likely she wants to get past the Four Plated Door. Putting these together, it is likely that in the future, Kvothe will trick Devi into helping him open the Four Plated Door.
