Biography[]
Season One[]
Devil is the second-in-command in Boyd's white supremacist gang, operating out of an abandoned church. He has recently been released from prison, having served time in prison for drug dealing. Devil appears in the series premier "Fire in the Hole", first being seen picking up Boyd after he kills gang member Jared Hale for being a government informer. Devil and Boyd's henchman Dewey Crowe later follow US Marshal Raylan Givens under Boyd's orders with the intention of killing him, but Raylan spots and easily defeats them before handcuffing them together.
Season Two[]
When Boyd and his cousin Johnny start recruiting Boyd's allies for his new criminal gang, they track down Devil, finding him playing poker. Johnny pulls a gun on the other players, and Boyd asks Devil to come with him, with Devil taking the opportunity to steal the other player's money. Outside, Boyd briefs him on upcoming operations, and Devil agrees to help. He later helps Boyd rob Dickie Bennett of his drug money, and listens to Arlo Givens complaining to Boyd that Dickie made him after the robbery.
After Boyd declares full-scale war on the Bennetts, Devil is deployed to guard Boyd's lover Ava against potential attacks. Ava refuses Boyd's orders to hide in the basement despite Devil's protestations, leading to an argument which is interrupted when Ava spots three gunmen outside and warns Devil just before they open fire. Devil manages to kill one of the gunmen, and the other guards kill a second while the third one takes cover. While Devil is distracted attempting to shoot him, Dickie jumps out of his hiding place and shoots Ava, wounding her. Devil manages to kill the final gunman and attempts to fire at Dickie as he runs away, but misses, allowing Dickie to escape. When Boyd returns, he chastises Devil for failing to protect Ava until Devil tells him Dickie shot her, prompting Boyd to go out after him.
Season Three[]
After Boyd is arrested for assaulting Raylan, Devil temporarily takes over the sale of a large marijuana crop, attempting to sell it to Rodney Dunham, although he claims that the crop is worth much less than Devil wants to charge him for because Devil didn't store it properly, causing it to be damaged. Ava later tells Devil that Boyd ordered her to burn the crop, but Devil refuses, prompting Ava to hit him with a frying pan in order to assert her authority.
After Boyd manages to get close to Dickie in prison, he finds out that local crime boss Ellstin Limehouse is in possession of the Bennett family fortune, causing him, Arlo and Devil to go and meet with him. After suggesting that they kill Dickie and split the money, Limehouse mentions that he heard Boyd has the marijuana crop, leading Boyd to realize that Devil didn't burn it and punch him in anger. After agreeing to sell it to Limehouse at a massive discount, before forcing Devil to load the truck with Limehouse's African-American henchmen as punishment for disobeying him.
After leaving, Boyd announces his intent to take control of all crime in Harlan, blaming his father's failure on his association with outside criminal empires, as well as that they're giving up the prostitution business because it isn't worth as much money as drugs. Boyd, Johnny and Devil then go down to a bar once owned by the Crowders, where they meet up with several new recruits and hold the owner Buck Mulligan at gunpoint until he signs the deed over to Boyd.
In the reclaimed bar, Devil and Boyd drink together, and Devil irritates Boyd by detailing his constant changes of allegiance, asking which Boyd he is being asked to follow. Boyd replies that he wants him to follow all of them, and asks Devil to trust him, leading Devil to hesitantly tell him he's in.
However, this is proven as a lie when Devil is seen with Tanner Dodd, a recruiter for Robert Quarles, one of Boyd's main rivals. Quarles tells Boyd that he has a better offer than working for Boyd. Devil later confides in Johnny, telling him that he plans to kill Boyd in order to join Quarles's organisation. At the episode's climax, Devil confronts Boyd in the bar and pulls a gun on him, but Boyd is unfazed, revealing that Johnny told him what Devil was planning as his henchmen point their guns at Devil. Boyd then shoots Devil in the chest, knocking him to the ground, and tells him that he only ever asked for his loyalty before asking him to close his eyes and shooting him in the head.
