The leaves of a clover are said to each house one thing. In the first three dwell integrity, hope, and love. In the fourth leaf dwells good luck. And in the fifth...dwells the devil.
~ Descrpition over the fifth clover leaf.

The Devils (also known as Demons under the Funimation translations) are the overarching antagonists in the Black Clover franchise. They are an ancient race of magical beings that dwell in the underworld.

Overview[]

The devils are a race of ancient beings known for their frightening magical capabilities. They often seek to possess other beings from the living world so that they make interact with said world and carry out their goals.

Notable demons included Zagred, who was responsible for the Elf Tribe's extermination, Licht's death, Patolli's conspiracy for revenge, the elves' hatred against humanity, the foundation of the Eye of the Midnight Sun and the entire reincarnation event; and Megicula who was responsible for the death of Acier Silva, the mother of Nozel, Nebra, Solid and Noelle Silva, whilst cursing Lolopechika and subsequently the Heart Kingdom. Moreover, Megicula is revealed to be in league with Vanica Zogratis, one of the Dark Triad, and contributes the Spade Kingdom's leadership by lending their Dark Disciples demonic power with Stage Zero. The most notable demon is Liebe, the devil residing in Asta's grimoire, who is the reason he is able to wield Anti-Magic.

Devils are classified into four rankings.

  1. Low-ranking Devils - The weakest rank who are vulnerable to being destroyed by a sufficient level of magic
  2. Mid-ranking Devils - Stronger devils which only can only be matched by a zero or arcane stage mage.
  3. High-Ranking Devil - Extremely powerful devils which are capable of overpowering several powerful mages by themselves. Zagred is an example of one such demon
  4. Supreme Devils - The strongest ten devils who are linked through the Qliphoth tree

Devils possess sinister mana that considered evil compared to normal magic and cannot be matched by normal mages. A devil's only true weak point is its heart and the only way to permanently kill one that is mid-ranked or higher, but it is also the most durable part of their body and can endure attacks strong enough to obliterate the rest of their body, requiring arcane stage or high power to destroy.

The Underworld in which devils live is described as a bleak and empty place where the only form of amusement comes from torturing those weaker or contacting humans who seek their powers. The Underworld is divided into seven levels, each possessing a gate that cuts devils from traveling between them and the living world. Lower levels contain stronger devils then the ones above and distributed among them are the supreme devils, the ten most powerful devils in existence. At the bottom level lives the three strongest devils who control time, space, and gravity respectively and rule all devils. The only way a devil can pass through the gate on their own is if they have no magic, but there has only been one case of this. The devils are shown to have a caste society, with low-ranking devils (like the Anti-Magic Devil) disparaged and looked down upon by the more famed and higher-ranking devils (like Lucifero). Devils are said to never challenge another devil if it stronger than them, making their position in the hierarchy absolute and unable to be changed.

Normally, the devils cannot appear in the living world on their own. However, there are multiple methods in which they can escape the Underworld. Shown from Liebe, Devils cannot wield or enter a grimoire until it has a five-leaf clover. Once they have a grimoire and a physical body, they can unleash their true forms and power in the living world. Even if they are stuck in the Underworld, some Devils have been shown to be able to access and influence the world, albeit in a limited manner. Zagred left his body behind and orchestrated the Elf Massacre as only a spirit and continued manipulating events until he could corrupt Patollii with despair to turn his grimoire into a five-leaf which he could harness to retrieve his body. Megicula attempt to manifest through one of her curses by sacrificing the souls of three powerful mages of the same gender, being able to partially manifest. Lucifero has shown particular influence, being able to possess and control other devils who've escaped the Underworld. Once the second gate of Qlipoth was open, he was able to use this ability to bypass the gates by controlling lower ranked devils and combining them into a body he could manifest into.

The other way devils can enter the living world is through the Qliphoth ritual. By combining World Tree Magic and Dark Magic in a ritual lasting seven days, it creates a magic channel call the Tree of Qliphoth that connects to the underworld and opens the gates, allowing devils to escape to the living world. The channel gradually descends deeper into the underworld, spreading like the roots of a tree all the way to the lowest level. With each gate opened, it also releases the Supreme Devils distributed on that level. The Dark Triad and their minions from the Spade Kingdom attempted to seize William Vangeance and Yami Sukihiro in order to use their respective magic aspects to create the Tree of Qliphoth, which would kill them once it was completed. Once it was created, it would open the portal towards the entire Underworld, releasing the devils within which would kill off 90% of the population.

Devil-Possession[]

Humans make contracts with devils to obtain their power, becoming devil-possessed. Those who make such contracts receive a portion of their contracted devil's magic power as well as their magic attribute in addition to their own. The more power the host takes, the more they inherit their devil's features such as horns and tails. However, it is impossible for a host to use 100% of their given power unless the portal to the Underworld is open, with the most powerful and compatible hosts being only able to access 80% at most. This power can also be distributed among others at a smaller amount. It also possible to extend the terms of the contract for more power in exchange for the host's body and soul.

While contracts can be willingly made with a devil, there is a ritual in which a devil can forcibly be subjugated. The ritual temporarily summons a devil from the underworld and places it in a magic circle that limits it power. If the summoner fights and defeats it, the devil will become forced to make a contract with the summoner, who is free to decide all terms of their contract, even complete control over the devil against their will. With full control over the devil, the host will be able to use a technique called Unite, which fully combines the host and devil's power together, increasing both dramatically. There is also the option of making an equal contract with a devil instead of controlling it, but this has the downside of making Unite harder to use because both parties must synchronize with each other. The tradeoff is that if both parties will be able to draw out even more power than a normal unite if they are able to properly align their hearts and goals. However, if the summoner loses to the devil during the ritual, the devil will take control of their body.

Beside the Dark Triad, Vice-Captain Nacht of the Black Bull squad is also a devil-possessed. Notably, he's the first devil-possessed who appeared in the series to have four demons serving him, with one of them is Gimodelo that is extremely loyal to him. None of these four devils have shown malicious intention thus far and have displayed genuine loyalty to their master.
