Devon Lane is the main antagonist of the 1999 American buddy cop comedy film, K-911. He is a former crime novelist turned psycho with a personal "grudge" on Detective Michael Dooley.
He was portrayed by Wade Williams.
Personality[]
Devon Lane is shown to be mean, stubborn, opportunistic, cruel, aggressive, abusive, selfish, arrogant, ruthless, merciless, and temperamental. His obsession with the fact that Dooley's wife "loved" him and that Dooley "killed her" renders him more delusional and crazier up to a point where he proves to be more psychotic, psychopathic, and sadistic when trying to do away with Dooley or anyone else close to him as well.
Biography[]
Prior to the events of the movie, Devon Lane was once a crime novelist whom Detective Michael Dooley's late wife, Tracy believed he had talent since she was an editor in her time. However, despite having been received a rejection letter written nicely by Tracy, Devon became obsessed with her nonetheless even after meeting her husband in order to talk to him about what is was like to be a cop and help him with his career, but after she died from an illness later on, he blamed Dooley for her death, leading him to become a stalker and raging, psychotic psychopath with a personal "grudge" vowing "revenge" on the latter afterwards.
In the present time, Devon suddenly appears in a bulletproof armor out of nowhere and begins attacking Dooley at an ATM machine with a modified M-16 he got from a company called Armaments 2000s (even though it's only for military use) despite the latter's K-9 partner, Jerry Lee warning him. Luckily, Dooley and Jerry Lee manage to take cover behind his car along with 2 other security guards unharmed. Both attempts to shoot from both parties fail and Devon is forced to drop his weapon and escape when Dooley and Jerry Lee try coming at him in an armored car, leaving Dooley's car with holes in the process.
After Devon manages to evade his pursuers in a motorcycle due to Dooley being out of shape and Jerry Lee getting a little bit too old, he spies on Dooley at the crime scene before returning to his storage room at Quick-E Self Storage where he begins writing about today's events in the form of a story while listening to a tape recording regarding his first interview with Dooley and his late wife, Tracy from a couple of years ago.
One night, Devon calls up Dooley at his house before shooting the latter's beer bottle in order to get his attention while saving him from 300 calories at the same time due to going on a diet lately. Then, Devon reveals to Dooley that he is actually the same suspect whom the latter had lost 3 times in 3 weeks while providing him with a few clues to his identity when he mentions "how hard it is to lose a loved one" before driving off and back to his storage room to write a new chapter about tonight's event as he listens to tonight's phone conversation on tape.
The next day, Devon arrives at the police station posing as a flower delivery guy delivering a flower bouquet with a complimentary card that reads: "Was last night as good for you as it was for me?" for Dooley. Outside the station, Devon takes photos of both Dooley and Jerry Lee now reluctantly partnered with Sergeant Wendy Welles and her own K-9 partner, Zeus by their captain, Byers before tailing them in a van as they make their way to question and probably arrest a recently paroled suspect named Harry Stipe who might possibly be the one out to get Dooley due to having sworn revenge on him after having busted his brother years ago.
After questioning Stipe, Devon is present at the same park his targets are at for some snacks, playing chess. After they leave, Devon wins the game and resumes following them to a gun supplier known as Fat Tommy (the same guy who sold Stipe ammo earlier) at his boxing gym. After Dooley learns from Fat Tommy that the seller of the M16 is Phil Cage; thanks to Jerry Lee, Devon calls up Cage at his salvage yard and tips him off about Dooley and his team's upcoming raid in 10 minutes.
After a fierce gun battle at Phil's salvage yard resulting in the near-complete destruction of Dooley's car and both Phil and his men's arrests, Devon deliberately allows Jerry Lee to pursue him the next day where both Dooley and his team finally make it to Quick-E Self Storage. After Welles acquires a warrant to search Devon's storage room, Devon spies on them as Dooley finally figures out who Devon really is after finding the latter's manuscripts with different pen names, his latest book about the former in recent events with Devon as the "hero" in it, and; especially, pictures of his late wife hung everywhere like a shrine.
After spying on Dooley last night, Devon begins developing pictures in a red room the next day. Realizing that Dooley is falling for Welles, Devon decides to go after and kill her, but not before calling up Dooley to reveal his intentions and give him a sporting chance to save her if possible. Then, Devon breaks into the police station after knocking an officer down and abducts Welles while shooting at other officers despite Dooley calling up to warn Captain Byers on the phone since calling Welles earlier failed.
When Dooley finally arrives, Devon continues holding Welles at gunpoint despite Dooley and other officers trying to hold him at gunpoint as well while laboring under the delusion that Dooley "killed his own wife" and that Tracy "loved" him more than anyone or anything. When Devon orders Dooley to back Jerry Lee off and after a complex conversation, Devon is suddenly but temporarily subdued by Zeus after Dooley hints to Welles to yell out a command in Dutch for Zeus to attack through a window since the latter only understands and obeys orders in Dutch. Then, Devon escapes as he still continues shooting at officers including Dooley pursuing him to the rooftop.
Once at the rooftop, Devon disarms then beats Dooley down with a stick and locks Jerry Lee and everyone else inside before he resumes mercilessly assaulting and beating Dooley up further. Despite Dooley's best attempts to fight back, Devon manages to get the upper hand when he holds him at gunpoint and shoots him on the leg with the latter's own gun, unaware that Jerry Lee has managed to sneak out another way, but hesitates to get the jump on Devon due to his age. Finally, after much encouragement from Dooley, Devon is finally subdued after Jerry Lee tackles him before being taken into custody for his crimes.
With Devon arrested, Dooley and Welles go out on a date after the former has finally recovered from his gunshot and other injuries at the hospital.
