That's it, then? Your edge. Women fight better than men.
~ Dicko to Sonnie.

Dicko is the main antagonist of the Love, Death & Robots episode "Sonnie's Edge".

He was voiced by Time Winters.

Personality[]

Dicko is an arrogant arena master who is obsessed with money. He also acts misogynistically, as he taunts Sonnie into thinking she was better than him just for being a woman.

Biography[]

In a future London, Dicko runs an underground tournament fighting ring for people who could telepathically control monsters called "beasties". When Sonnie's team comes to bring in Khanivore to be the next challenger, Dicko introduces himself to the group. He tells them that he finds Khanivore's seventeen straight win streak preposterous and offers them a bribe of half a million should Sonnie purposely lose the match, but she refuses. Angered, Dicko asks Sonnie what the purpose is behind her fighting, or "edge" as he refers it, but is ignored. Dicko prepares to attack her in frustration, but Sonnie's friends stop him, explaining her past of being beaten by an estate gang and was fighting out of revenge for the ones who hurt her. During the match when Khanivore battles Turboraptor, Dicko grins wickedly when Khanivore takes a massive wound to the chest, and is enraged once Khanivore kills Turboraptor by decapitating him.

Following the match, Dicko, still unsatisfied on Sonnie's decision to back down from his deal, decides to learn her edge by force. He sends in his mistress Jennifer, who seduces Sonnie into revealing her edge. Upon discovering her edge to be fear, Dicko appears and allows Jennifer to kill Sonnie. However, Sonnie is revealed to be an android connected to a bioware processor, and her real consciousness was inside Khanivore all along. She breaks through the holding tank and impales Jennifer through the head with her tail appendage. She then grabs Dicko and reveals her edge was the fear of dying during combat. The screen fades to black just as Khanivore lunges at Dicko.

Trivia[]

  • In the original short story written by Peter F. Hamilton, Dicko is not killed at the end due to him not being present alongside Jennifer.
    • However, the short's sequel, Sonnie's Union which was featured in the anthology Made to Order: Robots and Revolution, confirmed that Khanivore killed Dicko as with in Love, Death & Robots adaptation albeit much later in order to cover her and her friends' tracks.
