Diego Marquez Espinosa de Málaga is an overarching antagonist of the video game Just Cause 4. He was a Spanish conquistador and the ancestor of Oscar Espinosa who colonized the island of Solís and established his own state there.
Biography[]
Diego Espinosa was a Spanish conquistador who commanded the Black Hand mercenaries. He sailed to the South American island of Solís, which was then ruled by the chief Otorongo. He schemed to take over the island by inciting a civil war between its tribes. After the natives began to fight each other, he sided with the Qacha people and used their assistance to overthrow Otorongo and kill her and her family. Espinosa took great measure to discredit Otorongo, portraying her as a bloodthirsty monster. This campaign was so successful that most of the knowledge about Otorongo's kingdom faded away with centuries, with her even being misattributed the male gender.
Legacy[]
Diego eventually consolidated his power over Solís, which his descendants continued to rule centuries onwards, even when it was no longer a Spanish colony. The modern-day government continued to portray him favorably in media, with many books being written about him and a TV show titled Diego el Santo being filmed.
Diego's last known descendant is Oscar, who turned the Black Hand into a global power but ended up being the last member of the Espinosa dynasty due to his untimely death.
Trivia[]
- Since Diego is occasionally referred to as "Diego el Santo", it's possible that he was canonized in spite of his crimes.
