“ | Let this be a symbol of the fury born by our countrymen towards Aurelia, who have sought only to capitalize on our country's inner turmoil. | „ |
~ Diego's speech. |
Diego Gaspar Navarro is an antagonist in the Ace Combat franchise, serving as the main antagonist of the game Ace Combat X: Skies of Deception and the main antagonist of the game Ace Combat Xi: Skies of Incursion. He is the commanding officer and leader of the Democratic Republic of Leasath, who led his country into a war with its neighbour, Federal Republic of Aurelia, for the sake of demonstrating the might of his new weapons and increasing their price.
His voice actor is unknown.
Appearance[]
Diego Navarro has brown hair and black eyes. He is always seen wearing black military uniform with medals, and an undershirt with a red tie. In some cutscenes, he also wears a military cap.
Personality[]
Diego Navarro values wealth above all else and enjoys a luxurous lifestyle while most of his subjects are struck by poverty. His greed led him to steal humanitarian aid to buy weapons and even declare war on a peaceful country, after which he lied to Leasathians about his true intentions, being in fact indifferent to having caused untold amounts of deaths and suffering. Even when it becomes clear to everyone that Diego doesn't care for anything other than money, he tries to retain his pride and profit off the war while he still can. As Albert Genette pointed out, it was ironic that what the dictator expected to be the moment of his triumph would ultimately bring about his end instead.
Biography[]
Past[]
Diego Gaspar Navarro appears to have played a part in Leasath's politics as far back as during its civil war, when he secretly used the money sent by Aurelia as humanitarian aid for weapons purchase. After the war came to an end, he took power in the devastated country and oversaw the development of the flying fortress Gleipnir.
Skies of Deception[]
In October 2020, exactly one year after the end of Leasath Civil War, the Democratic Republic of Leasath invaded the Federal Republic of Aurelia, which, as Navarro claimed, was retribution for the latter country exploiting the former's internal conflict. Using Gleipnir's stealth system and shockwave missiles, the aggressor took control of 95% of Aurelia's territory in mere days. During this time, Diego would hold luxurous parties in Aurelia's occupied capital Griswall and boast of the might of his weapon.
However, the tide of war eventually turned to Aurelia's favor, when one of its pilots, Gryphus One, managed to destroy the Gleipnir, allowing the country to push the invader back and eventually liberate Griswall. Concurrently with that, an Osean journalist Albert Genette revealed Diego's true nature through his investigations and published his findings.
Despite Leasath's defeat, this wasn't the end of Navarro yet. The dictator returned to Leasath and prepared to unveil his stealth fighter, Fenrir, the power of which was to be demonstrated during its confrontation with Aurelian forces at Archelon Fortress. Navarro even had a Fenrir unit exhibited at the stadium where the battle was broadcast to his people. Despite the power of Fenrir fighters, however, they were all taken down by Gryphus One, and their defeat was seen by the crowds gathered at the stadium.
Fate[]
Diego Navarro's ultimate fate depends on the player's previous actions:
- If the player has completed less than 15 missions during the campaign, Navarro's lies are exposed, but he flees from Leasath with no trace left, leaving the remnants of his army to continue fighting.
- If the player has completed all 15 missions, the enraged Leasath citizens demolish the displayed Fenrir fighter. Whether the dictator was killed by them or not remains unclear, but Genette's words hint that his reign came to an end.
Trivia[]
- Diego Navarro is one of the few heads of an enemy state in the Ace Combat series to make a physical appearance.
