With the Spear, my son will accomplish what Hitler could not. We will turn the tide of the war and restore the German race to its former glory!
~ Dieterhoffmann about his son Seigfried and the plans he has for him.

Colonel Dieterhoffmann is the main antagonist of the 1995 comic book series Indiana Jones and the Spear of Destiny, the sixth Indiana Jones comic series published by Dark Horse Comics.

He is a ruthless Nazi official who works for Adolf Hitler along with his son Seigfried. In 1945, as World War II comes to a close, Dieterhoffmann decides to find the Spear of Destiny in hopes to helping his country win the war through his son, coming across the American archaeologist Indiana Jones and his father Henry Walton Jones, Sr. in the process.

History[]

One of the oldest members of the Nazi Party, Dieterhoffmann and his son Seigfried decide at the close of World War II to look for the Spear of Destiny, the spear that pierced Jesus Christ's heart during his crucifixion, to help their country to win the war and depose Adolf Hitler, whom they consider a failure and hated for being Austrian. In 1945, one month before Hitler's historical suicide, Dieterhoffmann attends one of Henry Walton Jones, Sr.'s talks at the British Grail lore annual conference of Glastonbury, England, impersonating a Nederlander, and asks Jones about his knowledge on the Spear of Destiny, due to it being one of the sacred objects involved in the Holy Grail procession. Deducing that Dieterhoffmann is a Nazi, Henry sends a letter to his son Indiana Jones to warn him about this, so Dieterhoffmann hires a group of Blueshirts to assassinate the younger Jones in a pub, but Indy manages to escape thanks to his assistant Brendan O'Neal despite the efforts of Dieterhoffmann's men to kill them in the streets.

Later on in England, Seigfried is ambushed by the Joneses and O'Neal, but defends himself until his father arrives to the scene with his men, taking Indy, his father and O'Neal hostages. Dieterhoffmann then explains to the Joneses and their friend about his plans for the Spear of Destiny, having already made a replacement shaft and preparing to kill all of them in an ancient castle, but the arrival of Edwina Cheltingham (a scholar whom the Joneses befriended hours ago) with her school girls provide a distraction to allow Indy, Henry and Brendan to escape from Dieterhoffmann and his men, asking her student Rebecca Stein to drive the three men with a real piece of the Holy Thorn.

As they drive to Wales, after seeing a vision of the Mysterious Blonde Woman in a lake, Indy is ambushed by Dieterhoffmann and taken hostage alongside Rebecca and his father, planning to use Rebecca as a ransom to obtain the Holy Thorn and then kill her. Dieterhoffmann has Indy thrown into the lake tied up with weight on his feet, but Indy saves himself by cutting his restraints with pointy weaponry sunk in the lake. Retrieve by O'Neal, Indy and his Irish friend track down the Nazis to Holyhead, where Dieterhoffmann steals a vessel by stealing it from its crew. However, Indy and Brendan provide a distraction by threatening Seigfried's life to recover the Holy Thorn and allow Henry to escape swimming, taking a boat in which they escape, though they are forced to leave Rebecca behind and one of the halves from the Spear with Dieterhoffmann.

Bak at the Irish pub in Ireland, Dieterhoffmann demands his men to find Jones, but Rebecca tells the mto forget it because Indy must have surely contacted the authorities by then, unaware that Indy has come back to save her. Dieterhoffmann gloats how he has an alibi back in Nuremberg, Germany in case the authorities question him, but slaps Rebecca for insulting his country, much to Seigfried's shock. Then Indy appears and threatens one of Dieterhoffmann's allies, throwing him against one of Dieterhoffmann's men, initiating a skirmish between the Nazis and their fellow Blueshirts while allowing Indy and Rebecca to escape in a car with the Spear's half. Dieterhoffmann and his men chase them by car, but Seigfried's car sinks into a river, delaying them for a while. However, Dieterhoffmann and his men are ultimately able to track down Indy and Rebecca to the cave where Henry and Brendan are waiting for them, revealing that the half Indy stole was a fake and that they have the real one, ordering one of his men to take the Spear from Brendan and give it to Seigfried, but the Speer kills Dieterhoffmann's henchman and reveals its powers to Brendan and Henry, leading Dieterhoffmann to witness the blood emantating from the Speer before he suddenly bleeds out to death and the cave's destruction is triggered.

Trivia[]

  • In spite of wishing to win World War II with the Spear of Destiny, Dieterhoffmann is easily one of the most sympathetic Nazis from the Indiana Jones franchise due to his care for his son Seigfried, in addition to genuinely respecting Henry Jones. Sr.
