~ Diligence's first words.
Contain the storm! I'll take care of the intruders.
~ Diligence orders his troops to stop the storm.

Diligence is the secondary antagonist in the dark comedy web series The Gaslight District. He is the leader of the Virtue Corp. who is tasked with protecting Paradise Lost and serves as the Angel Mother's right-hand man.

He is voiced by Micheal Kovach, who also voiced The Scientist in Poppy Playtime, N in Murder Drones, Jax in The Amazing Digital Circus, and Rocky Rickaby in Lackadaisy.

Appearance[]

Like the other Virtues, Diligence appears to be a brain piloting a sleek, white, robotic shell, with a sharp chin and mouth-like pattern on the face. He is distinguished from other Virtues by his silver pauldrons, which have numerous cross charms hanging from them, a chainlink connecting his chest and arms, as well as a small cross insignia on his right chest. He wears a police cap to signify his rank.

Biography[]

When the Smiling Dead attempt to infiltrate Paradise Lost in order to steal the Angel Mother's egg, they hid within a Virtue Corp. delivery truck and Mud would disguise himself as a guard. Once Mud stops the car in front of Paradise Lost, Diligence approaches the vehicle and inspects the trunk. When a guard jumps in front of Diligence to inform him that the truck is all clear, he crushes his head and throws his corpse into a spike out of irritation. Diligence then orders the other troops to form a staircase out of their own bodies, and painfully stabs them with his own heels as he walks down. He returns to Mud and allows him to proceed through the gates.

Once it was revealed that the facility has been compromised, Diligence orders his troops to contain the out of control Angel Storm while he peruses the intruders himself. As the Smiling Dead are making their escape, Mud hits him with his truck and gets flicked off the bumper by BreadHead before getting run over by the truck. Diligence grabs onto the back of the truck and fights Ken. As he gained the upper hand and begins to choke Ken, he looses his grip when the Angel Storm attacks the truck. Ken would ram his body into Diligence, knocking him out of the truck which caused his entire body to get shredded up by the storm. During the epilogue, it was revealed that Diligence survived as he puts his body back together.

Personality[]

True to his name, Diligence is meticulous and unwavering in his duties. He exhibits a cold, analytical demeanor, often dissecting individuals' appearances to deliver scathing, demeaning assessments. His leadership style is authoritarian; he shows little regard for his subordinates' well-being, using them as tools to achieve his objectives.

Trivia[]

  • "Diligence" is defined as careful or persistent work, which is reflected in his mannerisms when he inspects Mud's report and his body.
    • Ironically, a lack of diligence was also what caused his downfall as, instead of inspecting the source of Mel's sneeze, he gets distracted by one of his minions interrupting him and kills them, allowing the Smiling Dead to sneak in undetected.
  • It appears that the Virtues have an automatic vulgarity censor built into their bodies, as shown by how Diligence only called Mud a "filthy rancid Rotling" while his HUD displays much more profanity, signifying his true thoughts.
