| ~ The Worm's only known words. |
The Dimensional Horrors are supporting antagonists in the 4x strategy game Stellaris.
They are nightmarish beings originating from a different dimension, trying to enter ours. As with other spaceborne guardians from the game, the player can discover them while exploring the galaxy.
One of these Horrors, known only as "The Worm", can also be the main antagonist of a very rare game event named "Horizon Signal", which only affects the player.
Description[]
The Dimensional Horror resemble annelids but they are black and gigantic, dwarfing regular spaceships and even entire planets.
The Horrors have various pendages, although they are useless in our dimension, but they can use their tentacles to protect themselves, these tentacles can strike across an entire star system, they also have large gaping mouth which they use to discharge a powerful purple beam of unknown energy.
Background[]
The Dimensional Horrors are known to inhabit areas where the boundaries between our dimension and their dimension are at their weakest, these beings can be commonly found around black holes.
Despite being able to breach into our dimension, the Horror are eternally stuck between dimensions, so no-one has been able to fully see a Dimensional Horror in its entirety, and as such, they can't move.
Only one of these creatures has managed to fully breach our dimension, although briefly. Known as "The Worm", this particular Horror has intelligence unlike the others. The Worms has selected alien races even before they had crawled out of primordial ooze (Including the player's species). The Worm, when it was inhabiting normal space, would call out to this particular race, influencing their very existence. It would have a major impact on the race's development historically and evolutionary. At one point in time this race (The player's one) rejected the Worm and its "love" and called upon a unknown benevolent race to banish it.
The Worm eventually returns, barely breaching the dimensional barrier, and starts calling out to the same race again. If the race chooses to listen and accept its "love" wholeheartedly, they will transform back to their primordial selves (Now known as "The Messengers") and begin building a device to allow the Worm to reenter our space. But if they reject it, The Worm will attack them on their capital system, but the player may be able to defeat and banish it for good. If the player defeats the Worm they will also get a relic called "Scales of the Worm".
Another Horror that may be encountered in the game is one called "The Elder One", which may be released by the player if they research an archaeological site named "The Broken Gates", The Elder One will begin manifesting and the player has the option to stop it or let it be free, if the Elder One gets released it will destroy the entire system and then will contact the player offering to rebuild the starbase of the destroyed system along with an empire modifier, if the player refuses it becomes hostile and may be defeated.
When a Horror gets defeated, the player will be grant an option to parade the "Horrific Inverse Mass" that the Horror left in one of their planets, but this is not recommended, as it may end up destroying the entire planet and turning it into a black hole.
Trivia[]
- The Dimensional Horror can't really be killed, as the game implies that when the player defeats it, it just destroys its physical form and the Horror gets thrown back to its side of the dimensional fence.
- The Dimensional Horror is typically the first malevolent entity from another dimension that the player encounters in the game, but it certainly isn't guaranteed to be the last. One of the rewards the player gets for defeating itm is the ability to research the Jump Drive tech, a "dangerous technology" that increases the odds of the Unbidden appearing.
- According to the Curators, the Dimensional Horror is a creature of pure malice, hailing from a dimension which is compared to Hell itself.
- The Horizon Signal event was written by the British writer Alexis Kennedy, and it is the longest and most complex event chain in all of Stellaris.
