~ Dinin accepting the fall of his house. |
Dinin Do'Urden is a major antagonist in The Legend of Drizzt, serving as one of the two secondary antagonists of the Dark Elf Trilogy (alongside Roddy McGristle) and a minor antagonist in Legacy of the Drow. He was the son of Malice Do'Urden and the second son of drow House Do'Urden. Being an ambitious individual, he murdered his older brother and plotted to murder his younger brother in order to improve his station within his house. However, after witnessing the fall of his house, he joined the mercenary Bregan D'aerth and turned his ambitions elsewhere. He was eventually transformed into a drider by his sister Vierna.
Appearance[]
Like all drow, Dinin had white hair and ebony skin. Upon being transformed into a drider, Dinin lower half was transformed into the lower half of a giant spider and his upper half was bloated.
Personality[]
Dinin was ambitious and ruthless, being willing to murder his own brother to improve his position on the hierarchy. He was an egotistical glory-hound who struck whenever he thought he would benefit and cared more about his own standing than his house, although he was always obedient to his mother. He took sadistic pleasure in murder and torture and, like most drow, he was loyal to Lolth.
However, watching the fall of his house and meeting Jarlaxle changed him. After seeing that struggling up the hierarchy and fanatically sacrificing everything to for power led only to death, he changed his methods. He became much more cautious, choosing his own life over his station. Instead of striking the moment he got an opportunity, he would make plans year in advance to make sure they succeeded.
Biography[]
Secondboy of House Do'Urden[]
Dinin was born to Malice and Rizzen Do'Urden, being their second son after Nalfein Do'Urden. Dinin showed proficiency with swords and thus trained at the Melee-Magthere. He eventually became a master of the Academy, living their half the time and living in the Do'Urden compound during the other half.
When Malice began to plot to wipe out House DeVir, she had Dinin hire Gelroos Hun'ett, to murder Alton DeVir, in order to ensure that no member of the house survived. Dinin then lead the attack on House DeVir, along with Nalfein and Malice's lover Zaknafein. The attack was successful, and the Do'Urden troops were able to wipe out most of their rivals. However, near the end of the battle, Dinin stabbed Nalfein in the back, killing him and taking his position.
Elderboy of House Do'Urden[]
Over the next few decades, Dinin spent much of him time at the Melee Magthere. He began to train his younger brother Drizzt, who, while extremely skilled with blades, lacked the killer instinct that was so important to a drow, being unwilling to kill. Dinin took Drizzt, along with several other drow warriors, on patrols into the Underdark. On one occasion, Drizzt was briefly captured by a group of deep gnomes. Dinin and the others quickly dispatched of the gnomes until only one was left. Drizzt convinced Dinin to spare the remaining gnome as a warning to the others. Although he did let him live, Dinin cut off the gnome's hands first.
Dinin was beginning to plot to kill his younger brother when he received the news from his sister Vierna that any move against a family would be harshly punished, since they had heard rumors that another house plotted against House Do'Urden, and needed all their warriors. Shortly thereafter, Drizzt killed a surface elf child while on a surface raid, convincing Dinin that he was finally as vicious as he needed to be.
However, he was proven wrong when Malice discovered that Drizzt had faked the murder, displeasing Lolth. Malice was planning on sacrificing Drizzt, but Drizzt's father Zaknafein volunteered in his stead. Dinin helped to rest of his family kill the weapons master. Drizzt returned sometime later reporting that a member of House Hun'ett had tried to kill him, showing what house was plotting against them. Drizzt was angered by Zaknafein's death and fled the city.
House Do'Urden had no time to pursue their lost son, since the war with House Hun'ett started in full around that time. Dinin participated in many of the battles over the next decade. Eventually, Malice grew desperate and hired the mercenary group Bregan D'aerth. While working with Bregan D'aerth's leader Jarlaxle, Dinin was impressed with his ability to play both sides. Eventually House Do'Urden won the war but were threatened by the powerful Yvonnel Baenre, who told them that they would never regain Lolth's favor as long as Drizzt lived.
Dinin, along with his older sister Briza, where assigned that task of finding and killing Drizzt. After hunting him for several weeks, the pair found their little brother and fought his. They lost, and Dinin concluded that Drizzt was impossible to kill. Upon returning home, Dinin watched Malice make several more attempts on Drizzt's life, and correctly predicted that they would all fail.
Lieutenant of Bregan D'aerth[]
Eventually Malice ran out of time, and Yvonnel Baenre had House Baenre and Bregan D'aerth destroy House Do'Urden. During the attack, Dinin met with Jarlaxle, who gave him a choice: join Bregan D'aerth, of die with the rest of his family. Dinin chose the latter. After the attack, Dinin discovered that House Do'Urden had been completely wiped out except for Drizzt, who was still somewhere out in the Underdark, and his sister Vierna, who had been recruited into House Baenre. Jarlaxle proposed they hunt down Drizzt to receive the now considerable bounty on his head, but Dinin refused, saying he would rather die than face his brother.
Dinin eventually became a high-ranking member of the mercenary organization, being Jarlaxle's closest ally and right-hand. Many years after the fall of House Do'Urden, he was positioned in House Vandree, the seventh house of Menzoberranzan, which he spent almost a year infiltrating.
However, he was called back to the Bregan D'aerth headquarters before he could put his plans into play. There, he discovered that Jarlaxle had formed an alliance with Vierna, who wanted to sacrifice Drizzt. Although he initially helped her with her plan, Dinin eventually told Vierna he thought she was insane, and that she would never be able to kill their brother. Vierna punished him by transforming him into a mindless drider.
As a drider, Dinin was a mindless slave to his sister to follow her orders, helping her on her quest. Eventually, he was killed by King Bruenor Battlehammer (one of Drizzt's closest allies) in battle.
Trivia[]
