Dr. Montauk: Modernity is not always cold. It's less brutal than slavery.
Spivak: But what is it for? Is that the only purpose, a mere absence of brutality? What's the point of having peace and kindness for its own sake, so you can smile for a few decades before falling dead into an empty grave? Self-affirmation for a finite self. I don't understand it. I never did. I grew up trying. I wanted to be like them, like you, but the system just stared down at me with contempt. Maybe it's not coldness, doctor. Coldness seems too objective. It can't be that, because there is no objectivity. There's just the screaming and the madness and the need for purpose.
~ Dipesh Spivak explaining his worldview.

Dipesh Spivak is an antagonist in the SCP Foundation series, and the main antagonist of Tufto's Proposal of SCP-001 "The Scarlet King". He was originally the leader of the Children of the Scarlet King until his efforts were put to fruition by a joint operation done by the Global Occult Coalition and the SCP Foundation around January 2018. In the events of Tufto's Proposal, he is interviewed by Robert Montauk about the nature of SCP-001, AKA The Scarlet King, and is able to convince Dr. Montauk of his worldview and devotion to the Scarlet King.

Biography[]

Early in his life, Dipesh Spivak grew up poor on the streets Kolkata (formally Calcutta). He tried his hand at many endeavors including writing and bartering, however all ended up with him remaining starving still. As his anger and sorrow towards the British ruling India grew, he tried to find reason in his life by practicing religion before eventually converting to Atheism, however neither gave him satisfaction.

At some unknown point, he discovered the Scarlet King and became the leader of Children of the Scarlet King. Later on as the cults activities continued, they enact the ritual of the seven brides, which results in the creation of SCP-231 and the SCP Foundation getting involved in their activities. Eventually, Dr. Robert Montauk's brother, Jacob, was taken away and killed, and although Dipesh stated that Jacob was not killed by the cult, Dr. Montauk invented Procedure 110-Montauk as a way of getting revenge against the cult and the Scarlet King. This was able to slow down the arrival of the Scarlet King, due to the lack of reasoning and logic of the procedure's creation.

Around January 2018, the GOC and the SCP Foundation put an end to the Children of the Scarlet King, and imprisoned Dipesh Spivak within Site 713. Dr. Robert Montauk then was assigned to interview him and question him about the Scarlet King, and do more investigation to understand what the Scarlet King is. As the months go by, Dipesh Spivak subtly tries to sway Dr. Montauk toward understanding his point of view, and gets more and more personal with him as time goes on. This eventually leads to a portal leading to the Scarlet King manifesting in Dipesh's room caused by the explanation of what the Scarlet King is being fully revealed to and understood by Dr. Montauk. Dipesh Spivak then tells Dr. Montauk about his worldview and philosophy on modernity, before eventually asking him to shoot him. Montauk then finally asks what happened to Jacob, and after Dipesh says they weren't involved with his death, Dr. Montauk shoots and kills him.

Personality[]

One of Dipesh's most noticeable traits is his nihilism towards the world, as he states that he believes that nothing in the world has any purpose or meaning, and that any truth that exists is only temporary. He also despises others for adding meaning onto concepts with modernity, especially the Foundation as their whole organization is dedicated to the classification of anomalies. Dipesh does see Dr. Robert Montauk as different from the rest of the Foundation however, as while Dr. Montauk's philosophy and beliefs are based on that of the Foundation's, his actions of creating Procedue-110 Montauk lacked any purpose or meaning. It is hard to tell how much Dipesh Spivak genuinely liked Dr. Robert Montauk however, as his words were rather inconsistent with how he talked to him and how he saw him, and he often left him purposefully in the dark in many conversations.

Despite his nihilism however, he still has devoted his life to the Scarlet King, as it's the only thing that he is able to truly relate to. He likely understands the irony in this however, as he notes that the naming of, symbols, and worship, are all things that bring the Scarlet King into their reality due to the rationalization of him. This devotion is also shown to bring great mental pain to Dipesh, as he states that all he ever sees is the Scarlet King with it burning his eyes. Because of this, as well his admittance to the evil of the Scarlet King in general, it is shown that Dipesh is someone who believes something akin to "the greater good", which is ironic due to him mocking Montauk earlier in the conversation about the SCP Foundation's enactment of that principle.

Dipesh also seems to posses a way of charming and enticing people to follow his will, as he was able to become the leader of an anomalous cult seemingly without any reality bending abilities and convince Montauk of his world view. This trait also seems to have an opposite effect as well however, as he states himself, many apparently seem to find him "cryptic" and in one instance "airy". Either way, his manipulation is made the more impressive by his admittance near the end of the story that he simply can't relate to the average person, as unlike them, he can't attach himself with modernity and reason.

Trivia[]

  • Dipesh Spivak's name is derived from the names of real life people Dipesh Chakrabarty and Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak who are both postcolonial scholars, tying the origin of the Scarlet King with the feud caused during the English colonization of India.
  • In "Some Are Born To Endless Night" it was revealed that Jacob Montauk was transported to a dark dream dimension through a SCP-3553-B event, becoming one of the many SCP-3553-A instances who helped create the the Scarlet King. However, in the "Manhattan Crisis" series, Montauk was depicted as having in fact been kidnapped by the Children before he was rescued by the Chaos Insurgency.
