| ~ Radcliffe's breakdown after Rex refuses to kill Cecil. |
Director Radcliffe is the overarching antagonist of the Invincible: Atom Eve prequel comics and a minor character in the animated adaptation Invincible.
He was a former Director of Global Defence Agency who, after retirement, purchased Rex Splode from his family so that he could train him to become his hitman. He is the adopted father turned archenemy of Rex Splode.
He is voiced by Bokeem Woodbine, who also played Mike Milligan in Fargo, Gordon "G-Man" Thomas in Law & Order: Criminal Intent, Derek Keyes in Chicago P.D., Harry in Total Recall, and Shocker in Spider-Man: Homecoming.
Appearance[]
Radcliffe is a tall, dark-skinned, bald man, presumably in his late 50s. His most defining features are the scars that are all over his face. He is usually seen wearing a light gray suit, which includes a white shirt and black tie. Occasionally, he also wears glasses.
Personality[]
At first, Radcliffe appears to be a polite and smart individual with honor and respect for others. However, it's later revealed that Radcliffe is actually an abusive and short-tempered sociopath who immediately starts harassing others physically if they don't listen to his demands.
Biography[]
Background[]
Director Ratcliffe initially led the Global Defense Agency, mentoring Cecil Stedman. During a Pentagon invasion by the Lizard League, Radcliffe revealed he had secretly recruited two terrorists who had previously nearly killed Stedman. These terrorists intervened and saved them. Radcliffe confessed that their supposed deaths were staged because he believed they could be more useful working for the government. However, Cecil expressed his gratitude by killing the former terrorists on the spot, resulting in his imprisonment. A few months later, Director Radcliffe visited Cecil in prison to inform him that he was resigning from the Global Defense Agency and believed Cecil was the only suitable successor. Cecil initially refused, but Radcliffe reminded him that sometimes one must choose between being the good guy and saving the world. Cecil ultimately accepted the position.
Purchasing Rex Splode[]
A few years later, Radcliffe bought the services of a teenager named Rex Sloan, offering his parents wealth in exchange. Rex's parents agreed with the offer, so he trained him to be his superhuman hitman to further his agenda. Eventually, Radcliffe went rogue and plotted to use Rex to assassinate his former protégé, Stedman, by destroying the entire Pentagon. However, Rex refused to follow the plan and warned Stedman about Radcliffe’s intentions. In retaliation, Radcliffe attempts to attack Rex for his betrayal, causing Rex to accidentally transform Radcliffe's glasses into a bomb that blows his head up, killing him.
Trivia[]
- He is most likely based on Jean-Luc LeBeau, who is also known to have been very abusive to Gambit when he was very young, the hero that Rex Splode is based on.
