The Disaster Curses (unofficial name) are the main antagonists of the first half of the manga/anime series Jujutsu Kaisen. They are a group of unregistered special grade cursed spirits who allied with Kenjaku to remove Satoru Gojo off the playing field so that they could exterminate humanity.

They are each periodically born from their respective natural disasters that humanity fears, with the exception of Mahito, who represents humanity’s hatred towards each other.

History[]

Background[]

The Disaster Curses are among the strongest Special Grade Curses in existence due to the sheer number of non-powered humans fearing various concepts throughout history. As a result, the Disaster Curses are reborn and exorcised by Jujutsu sorcerers.

Jujutsu Kaisen[]

The current group of the Disaster Curses were incarnated several months before Yuji Itadori devoured Sukuna's finger. They are introduced to Suguru Geto so that they can get rid of him, the sole opposition to the Curses' desired goal of exterminating humanity. Jogo demonstrates his power by killing everyone in a restaurant by burning them down.

Geto suggests to them that they should wait till October 31st in Shibuya for the maximum successful chance of sealing Gojo, to which Jogo rejects and decides to face him personally. While Gojo and Yuji were training the latter for Cursed Energy, Jogo ambushes them and challenges Gojo.

Unfortunately for Jogo, Gojo is still immensely stronger than him and uses him to demonstrate Domain Expansion to Yuji. Jogo is decapitated and nearly exorcised until Hanami's intervention, who states they are better than the humans before fleeing with him.

Mahito is soon born after the hatred humanity has for each other begins to take shape. He is seen agreeing with Geto's plan to seal Gojo on October 31st.

A few days later, Mahito kills a few students watching a movie and soon gains the trust of Junpei Yoshino, a misanthropic student. Testing the hatred humans have for each other, Mahito soon begins to corrupt Junpei into committing crimes.

Mahito then encounters Kento Nanami and gets into a fight with him, resulting in his defeat. Now realizing that the Jujutsu sorcerers are onto him, Mahito watches as Junpei is slowly drawn away from misanthropy with the help of Yuji Itadori, after which Mahito plants Sukuna's finger at his mother's home, killing her, and then misleading Junpei that one of the bullies at the school killed her. While attacking his school, when Junpei is convinced to join Jujutsu High by Itadori, Mahito kills him and tries to bring Sukuna to their side. Angered by Mahito's insolence, he grievously injures him.

Sometime later, Kokichi Muta, also known as Mechamaru, agreed to be the mole for the Disaster Curses so that Mahito could heal his broken body. Mahito then arranged for him to get a Binding Vow, failing which he could die.

Hanami and Mahito then take part in the attack on Tokyo Jujutsu High. Hanami served as a distraction to the staff and the students, hopefully killing some of them, whereas Mahito was assigned to break into the security and steal the Death Paintings, which was successful despite Hanami being grievously injured at the hands of Todo, Itadori, and Gojo.

Mahito and the others later tell the Death Paintings about their goals and request that they capture one of Sukuna's fingers, which fails with the deaths of both Eso and Kechizu. While playing the game of life with them, they hear the news from Choso, the remaining Death Painting.
