| ~ Disgraced Chef Lugoli's entry in the Hunter's Journal. |
Disgraced Chef Lugoli is a minor antagonist in the 2025 indie metroidvania Hollow Knight: Silksong, serving as a supporting antagonist in the "Great Taste of Pharloom" questline.
She is a chef that was exiled from the Citadel for their "culinary crimes", forcing her to return to her home of the Sinner's Road where she leads the Roachservers in preparing food for the residents of the area. Despite her madness from the Haunting and frankly disgusting cooking, Lugoli's Pickled Muckmaggots are an incredibly prized ingredient, hence why Loyal Mergwin asks of Hornet to retrieve one of them for him.
Appearance[]
Digraced Chef Lugoli is an obese, completely black bug resembling the roach farmers of the Sinner's Road. She wears what appears to be a ragged brown hat, a very dirty apron and has two pairs of small wings on her back. Lugoli is always seen wielding a ladle in battle. When attacking with her rear end, Lugoli is seen to have very prominent butt cheeks, something that no other bug in the series thus far possesses.
Personality[]
As seen from her Needolin dialogue, Lugoli is an incredibly dedicated and obsessive chef, determined to capture whatever delicate tastes she can into her cooking. She seems to wonder if she can ever perfect her cooking and appear very devoted to her home of Pharloom, seeking to capture its essence in her prized Pickled Muckmaggots. Lugoli, however, is completely insane, believing that consuming bugs somehow creates a new layer of flavour to their meals, with her memory in her storage room displaying that to her, cannibalising other sapient bugs is a form of honouring them.
Biography[]
Lugoli used to be a famous chef in Pharloom, serving the upper caste of the Citadel the finest meals possible. However, as a result of some unspecified "culinary crimes", likely to do with the usual style of their cooking, she was exiled back to her birthplace of the Sinner's Road. Despite her new, disgraced role as a chef for the roach herders, Lugoli is evidently still fond of her old home and longs to properly encompass Pharloom's essence in her cooking. Whether or not Lugoli was a cannibal before the Haunting is uncertain, but she does seem to have been eating other sapient bugs for a while as proven by her jars of pickled pilgrims and Craws. Said cannibalism may also have been why Lugoli was exiled in the first place, though as her more morally sound cooking is still terrible, this is uncertain. What is known is that Lugoli's Pickled Muckmaggots were a famous ingredient throughout Pharloom, with their intense flavour making them a polarising food.
After Hornet receives a quest to fetch various ingredients from throughout Pharloom for Mergwin, a butler in the Citadel, in exchange for some Pale Oil, she is directed to the Sinner's Road. There, she finds herself in a butchery with two Roachservers divvying up the Craw and Muckroach meat present. Hornet must ring the gong, alerting the two Roachservers who attack her. Once Hornet defeats them, Lugoli herself will appear, attacking by smacking her ladle into Hornet, diving into the muck below or swinging her incredibly large rear end at her. Most of these attacks will spoon up orbs of Muckmaggots that will attach themselves to Hornet, eating her silk and leaving her vulnerable to further attacks. If fought in Act III, Lugoli will gain an attack where the Void corrupting her lashes at Hornet with countless tentacles.
Once Lugoli is defeated, she plunges into the waters below, leaving behind a Pickled Muckmaggot for Hornet to collect. Presenting this ingredient to Mergwin causes him to remark that Lugoli's recipes outlived her, causing Hornet to reply that the chef had survived exile and was still cooking despite the Haunting, causing him to remark that Lugoli really was talented and the Citadel should've waited before exiling her. Later on, Hornet can return to the kitchen where the Roachservers have already begun preparing Lugoli's corpse for cooking. A room above the kitchen can be visited using the Silk Soar ability, wherein one can find jars of Lugoli's pickled victims and one of her memories of cooking.
Trivia[]
- Thanks to her attack utilising her rear end being showcased in an XBox trailer of Silksong, Lugoli was given the nickname of "Ass Jim" by the community before her name was officially revealed, a name primarily popularised by lore YouTuber and theorist mossbag. The use of this nickname remains prevalent in the Hollow Knight community even after Lugoli's real name was revealed, despite not being male as the name "Ass Jim" would suggest.
- As for how this nickname was coined, Lugoli had a much more masculine voice in the original XBox trailer, leading to assumptions that she was male, hence the name "Jim". In the actual game, her voice is more feminine and high-pitched.
- While Lugoli is never explicitly mentioned as female in-game, she was referred to under female pronouns in the Spanish translation and was later confirmed as female thanks to a list provided to Hollow Knight.Wiki's staff by Team Cherry themselves.
