Divan Umarov is a major antagonist of the Unwind Dystology series. He first appears in the second novel, UnWholly. He was a black marketeer who specialized in unwinding children and selling their body parts on the black market. He is wealthy and one of the top black marketeers in organ trade. He is a rival and the enemy to the organization, Burmese Dah Zey.
Biography[]
Divan was a competent black marketeer who traded teenager's body parts for a large income. He was known for his criminal dealings and was outlawed specifically in the United States for his crimes. He would travel across the world on his massive plane, the Lady Lucrezia, where it held the UNIS (advanced technology that can unwind a teenager in a matter of minutes). He was competitive with the Burmese Dah Zey and governments that make profit on unwinding children. He would often be targeted by the Burmese Dah Zey for assassination attempts but would evade them or stop them. Divan is always traveling on the Lady Lucrezia to avoid being caught by the Burmese Dah Zey.
Divan partnered with Jasper T. Nelson to help him with capturing AWOLs. Divan was impressed by Nelson’s work and wanted him to capture Connor Lassiter, the infamous Akron AWOL. Divan soon started to work with Argent Skinner, a young man who worked with Nelson. Divan almost had Argent unwound when Argent gave away the code to his sister's, Grace Skinner's whereabouts, to find Connor. Divan instead had half of Argent's face given to Nelson on Nelson’s demands and Argent's face kept together with a biobandage. Divan made a deal with Argent to work as his servant for a couple months so that he can have his face repaired and Argent agreed.
Divan at one point was able to buy Mason Starkey from Proactive Citizenry. Nelson brings Divan, Connor and Risa Ward. He keeps Risa Ward as his guest on his plane and had no interest in unwinding her. When Mason Starkey was about to be unwound, Connor strangles Starkey to death when Starkey wanted to die instead of being unwound. Divan was infuriated because Starkey's body parts would now value less because he was dead. Divan had his minions find Connor. Connor tried to find a way out of being unwound and wanted to protect Risa. Divan and Connor had conversations leading up to the latter's unwinding and Connor refused to forgive or accept Divan for how he made profit for unwinding hundreds of teens. Divan later has Connor unwound and has his body parts sold off for profit. Unbeknownst to Divan, Argent switched every container that had Connor's organs with Bryce's organs. In addition, Divan was unaware that Argent incapacitated Nelson and had him unwound.
When Divan saw Connor on the news, he refused to believe it was a rewound Connor and thinks that the person on the news was an imposter. Divan gets into conflict with his sister, Dagmara, when she brings Sonthi, a member and representative of the Burmese Dah Zey, onto his plane. When Argent tells him that Dagmara attempts to poison Divan when he is eating his food, Divan instructs Argent on either poisoning Sonthi or Dagmara. The next day, Sonthi succumbed to the poison and Divan knocks his sister out with a tranquilizer gun. Divan also had Dagmara's son, Malik, unwound. When the plane landed and took off, he realized that the plane was overtaken by his enemies, and he killed them including the pilots. He programs his organ to sync with the plane’s flight and leaves Dagmara on the plane to tell her to play the piano to keep the plane from falling. Divan and Argent jump out of the plane and lands safely with their parachutes. Divan rewards Argent with a container that had half of Malik’s face to replace Argent’s missing half of his face. Divan tells him that people will come to rescue him and that he plans to retire from his business and to live near the Mediterranean Sea.
