It doesn't have to be this way, Lisa. I can make this nightmare end for you right now. Let me give you Paradise.
~ Djinn offering to end the torment if Lisa accepts him.
Try to look beyond what your eyes see. I am only a monster if you choose to see me as one. I can wear anybody you like, any form you desire. What you felt for Verdel, you can feel for me. Just define the world that pleases you, and it's yours.
~ The Djinn to Lisa Burnley.

The Djinn, later taking on the identity of Steven Verdel, is the titular main antagonist of Wishmaster: The Prophecy Fulfilled, the fourth and final installment of the Wishmaster film series.

He is, like his predeccesors, a member of the wish-granting Djinn demon race who was awakened by a woman named Lisa Burnley who wanted justice against a motorcycle company for being responsible for a faulty part in her boyfriend Sam's motorcycle causing him to break legs.

However, he ends up falling in love with her and attempts to understand the concept of love, which confuses him.

He was played by John Novak as the Djinn, whom also portrayed the Djinn in Wishmaster 3: Beyond the Gates of Hell and by Michael Trucco as Steven Verdel.

Personality[]

Though still a unholy demon out to free his brethen and take over the Earth just like the Djinn in the first two movies, as well as the Djinn in the third movie, this Djinn develops a genuine affection for the woman who freed him, Lisa Burnley, though love is still something that confuses him. The Djinn spent time learning about human carnal desire, romance and intimacy; this was partially given the last wish was "to love [him] for he truly was" (with her having thought to genuinely be Steven, the man who was her lawyer and smitten with her), but the Djinn also seems to have developed a true crush on her whilst learning about love. He also shot down the other Djinn, insisting he simply put Lisa under a love spell, saying that wouldn't be true love.

Perhaps due to his crush on Lisa, the Djinn seems a little more honorable as his wishes are done with less catches than prior Djinn, even granting a wish providing the means to destroy himself.

Though the Djinn is more pleasant than past Djinn, he still retains the desire to unleash the apocalypse on humanity and takes his time to kill innocent people. For example, despite having a thorough conversation with Lisa's friend, Tracey, on romance, and earnestly thanking her for the advice, the Djinn still could not resist killing Tracy when she wished for killer sex.

After saving her from an angel trying to kill her, the Djinn expressed his feelings via sex; though his pushiness to hear her say she loved him and her feelings for her boyfriend, Sam, undid his work. In the end, he offered to ensure a part of earth was a paradise for her while she was his second in command for eternity; even being willing to take the form of any lover she preferred.

Biography[]

The Djinn has been awakened once more. This time, it is Lisa, the woman who woke him, who is seeking justice against a motorcycle company. It is believed that the company is responsible for a faulty part that caused her boyfriend Sam to have a severe accident resulting in him breaking his legs. The Djinn kills her lawyer Steven, who harbored romantic feelings for the Lisa and takes Steven's identity for his own. The Djinn as Steven manipulates Lisa into making a wish to win the case. Deceptively presenting a strong argument to the opposing lawyer over the phone, the Djinn intimidates him into signing an agreement and unfortunately, magically makes him gruesomely commit suicide in front of his friends and coworkers.

The Djinn then kindly escorts Lisa to an Indian themed restaurant called The Palace in order to commemorate their "victory". Encouraging her to contemplate a wish, the Djinn graciously fulfills her desire for Sam to regain the ability to walk, although without fully mending his legs, making it so walking is very painful for Sam. Later, while enjoying some drinks at Steven's house, the Djinn happens to overhear Lisa rhetorically express her desire to accept him for who he truly is. Recognizing that his true form may be unsettling and off-putting to her, the Djinn embarks on a quest to comprehend the concept of human love. While the Djinn continues his quest to comprehend love, he discovers a genuine affection for Lisa. In his attempt to fulfill her desires, he unintentionally causes harm to her co-worker due to a misunderstanding. Additionally, he becomes aware of Lisa's unmet needs, as Sam was unable to provide for her due to his emotional state.

After experiencing a dangerous encounter with an angel who posed a threat to Lisa's safety, the Djinn, known as Steven, courageously shares his feelings with her. Utilizing his magical abilities, the Djinn respectfully kisses Lisa, sparking a sense of desire within her. This passionate moment leads to them engaging in intimate activities in her living room, ultimately resulting in them undressing. Lisa takes the initiative to guide him onto the couch. Their intense connection ignites a fire in the fireplace and briefly allows another Djinn to temporarily escape. However, when the Djinn inquires if Lisa now loves him, she expresses her aversion to discussing such matters related to his personal affairs. Upon realizing that the conventional approach may not be effective, the Djinn reveals his true identity and proposes Lisa ruling the world with him or taking Lisa into a world created to be an everlasting paradise specifically for her where every one of her wishes would come true.

At this moment, Sam returns and tells the Djinn his wish, something with which he could kill the Djinn with. The Djinn subsequently provides Sam with an angelic sword but tells Sam, he'll have to do the rest of the work as the Djinn pulls out a sword of his own. Tragically, the Djinn defeats and impales Sam, mortally wounding him.

The Djinn approaches Lisa and asks her to take his hand. Surprisingly, Lisa appears to accept the Djinn under the condition that he assumes Sam's appearance. However, this turns out to be a cunning deception, as the severely injured Sam forcefully strikes the Djinn with the angelic sword lodged in his own body, ultimately causing the Djinn's demise and allowing Sam to pass away peacefully knowing the Earth was safe.

Trivia[]

  • There is an unconfirmed fan theory that the Djinn knowing Lisa could never be truly happy in a world ruled by Djinn, guided her into being able to kill him so she could be free.
