Today, American taxpayers will get a demonstration of what their money has produced.
~ Dmitri Gredenko

Dmitri Gredenko is the overarching antagonist of Season 6 of 24. Gredenko was a Russian general and Soviet ultranationalist who handed nuclear weapons to terrorist Abu Fayed to detonate the weapons in American cites as revenge for the Soviets losing the Cold War.

He was played by Croatian actor Rade Serbedzija, who also played Murad Hoxha in Taken 2, Andrei Strasser in Mighty Joe Young, Mikhaylo Sczerbiak in Shooter, Boris the Blade in Snatch, and Captain William Blake in The Fog.

Before Day 6[]

Gredenko was a decorated and loyal general in the Soviet Union, who swore revenge on the United States after the Soviet Union collapsed. Gredenko was later put in charge of releasing five nuclear suitcase weapons to the United States so they could be dismantled as part of a disarmament pact. On the American end, the government subcontracted a private company, BXJ Technologies, to dismantle the bombs and recycle their cores for energy production. Gredenko knew from his friend Anatoly Markov that Phillip Bauer, the chairman of BXJ, was involved in the assassination of President David Palmer. Gredenko used this information to blackmail Phillip and his son Graem into handing over the nuclear weapons to him, instead of dismantling them.

The Bauers reluctantly agreed because they knew the triggers had been deactivated and therefore were useless. Gredenko claimed that he wanted the bombs to rebuild the nuclear arsenal for the Soviet Union when the country would be re-established. Believing Gredenko to be delusional, Phillip sold the five nuclear weapons to Gredenko. However, Gredenko was lying. He supplied the weapons to Muslim extremist Abu Fayed, who had reconfigured the trigger mechanism, enabling him to detonate the bombs in American cities, killing millions of people. Gredenko proudly told his men that the Russians would destroy the United States and the Arabs would take all the blame. Gredenko expressed his belief that the Soviet Union made a huge mistake by not using nuclear weapons in the Cold War, and he would get redemption for their mistakes.

Day 6[]

Hours after the first nuclear weapon was detonated in Valencia, at about 4:00 PM, Gredenko and his men had just arrived at an abandoned airplane graveyard in the Shadow Valley, where he received a call from Fayed, who was on his way to the location. When asked how long it would take to configure the bomb delivery system, Gredenko replied it would take about three hours after they acquired technology itself. Soon after, Yuli and the rest of Gredenko's men arrived at the spot, having brought the delivery system with them: UAV drones, apparently stolen from the U.S. military. Their plan was to trigger aerial detonations of their bombs over US cities for maximum casualties.

Nearly an hour later, Gredenko was contacted by Markov, the Russian consul, who told Gredenko that Charles Logan approached him and was asking for his whereabouts. Markov assured Gredenko that the Americans would not know of Russia's involvement in the day's events. Markov promised to inform Gredenko of any new information that surfaced. Markov later told Gredenko that the Americans were raiding the consulate and would know of his location in a matter of minutes. He told Gredenko to launch the drones immediately. When Fayed told Gredenko that the first drone was ready, they prepared for it to get launched.

Gredenko attempted to detonate one of the nukes over San Francisco, but this was thwarted by the government. In a rage, Fayed attacked Gredenko and threatened to kill him. However, Gredenko calmed him by reminding him they still had a chance of delivering the remaining two nukes to their targets. Gredenko also assured Fayed he was the only one who could give him the targets he wanted, so it would be a foolish decision for Fayed to kill him. Afterwards, Gredenko called Mark Hauser and asked for schematics and security detail of the Edgemont Nuclear Power Plant.

However, before this could happen, Jack captured and interrogated Gredenko. After this, he planned to hand him over to Russian President Yuri Suvarov. Gredenko agreed to help capture Fayed in exchange for presidential immunity and safe transportation to any country, except Russia. Gredenko set up a meeting with Fayed once he got his agreement in writing. Jack called Bill Buchanan and had Attorney General Graves write the immunity agreement up. Once Gredenko's lawyers confirmed that the agreement was legit, Gredenko made a call to Fayed and arranged a meeting at the Santa Monica Pier. Gredenko's arm was then injected an isotope tracking device in case he tried to run. However, Gredenko cut off his arm to get rid of the isotope tracker, and then fled with Fayed, leaving his arm behind.

Fayed and Gredenko entered a bar, and Gredenko decided to betray Fayed. He made an announcement that Fayed was the man behind the terrorist attacks that happened over the course of the day. Some of the drinkers recognized Fayed from the news, and they began to attack him. Fayed fended them off and shot one civilian, and Gredenko used this distraction to escape and save himself. However, he eventually lost his energy and collapsed underneath the Santa Monica Pier. He died from either blood loss or drowning, and his body was later discovered by CTU.

Trivia[]

  • Gredenko is mentioned by name four episodes before he actually appears.
  • Gredenko is one of the smartest and most ruthless 24 villains. He managed to play the Bauers, Fayed, and the entire United States government. Had it not been for Assad, he might have succeeded.
  • Gredenko is the overarching main antagonist of Season 6 because he was the one who blackmailed Phillip Bauer into handing him the suitcase nukes. This resulted in Abu Fayed using them in American cities, Phillip Bauer engaging in desperate cover-up activity and Cheng Zhi getting his hands on the FB Subcircuit Board. These three events are the major conflicts of the season.
