| “ | So, I'm of the thinking that you are my lucky charm and that I'm not doing this job without you. Now, I don't think I need to give you the speech about what happens when you say no, how I could break your legs and kill everyone you love, because you already know that, don't you? So, what's it gonna be? Behind the wheel, or in a wheelchair? | „ |

Doc is the overarching antagonist of the 2017 action film Baby Driver.
He is a manipulative crime boss who masterminds a series of high-profile heists in the Atlanta area. He also blackmails the kind-hearted yet incredibly skilled Baby to serve as getaway driver for countless robberies, including a massive post office heist with a new crew.
He was played by Kevin Spacey, who also played John Doe in Se7en, Dave Harken in Horrible Bosses, Keyser Söze in The Usual Suspects, Micky Rosa in 21, Hopper in A Bug's Life, Lester Burnham in American Beauty, Lex Luthor in Superman Returns, Clyde Northcutt in Fred Claus, Buddy Ackerman in Swimming With Sharks, Jonathan Irons in Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare, Albert Benton in Unsub, and Frank Underwood in House of Cards.
Biography[]
Doc first appears splitting the loot of a bank heist between himself and his initial crew: Baby, Buddy, Darling, and Griff. Doc defends Baby when Griff mocks him for being quiet and later meets Baby to tell him that Baby is one job away from being freed from his debt.
In the next heist, Baby works with another crew consisting of Bats, JD, and Eddie No-Nose. As he lays out the plan, Doc recounts that Baby started working with him after Baby stole his Mercedes. Despite complications from Bats killing a guard and JD leaving his shotgun behind, the heist is successful. Doc tells Baby he is free from his debt, the celebration lessened by Baby noticing JD's body in Doc's car.
Baby finds work as a pizza delivery boy and takes his new girlfriend Debora out for an expensive dinner, where he runs into Doc. Doc tells him he still requires his services and threatens Baby into rejoining the gang. Baby reunites with Buddy, Darling and Bats as they prepare to raid the United States Postal Central.
After Bats ends up killing Doc's police informants, Doc is prepared to cancel the heist, but all four crew members override him. Things are further complicated when Doc finds out that Baby had been recording his conversations with the crew, and raids his home. After discovering that Baby has simply been making mixtapes, Doc relents.
The heist goes awry once Baby snaps and kills Bats after witnessing him kill a guard and Buddy similarly turns on Baby once Darling is killed by the police. Baby goes to Doc for help. While at first angry at Baby for ruining the heist, he agrees to help him after seeing Debora, handing him a bag of money to bribe border officials and recalling that he was once in love.
Once downstairs, Baby, Debora and Doc run into three gangsters. Doc kills the gangsters in quick succession, being wounded as a result, and yells at Baby and Debora as a police cruiser arrives, driven by Buddy. Buddy runs over Doc, killing him.
Personality[]
On the surface, Doc is a typical crime boss who is affably evil, intelligent and cunning, able to come up with plans with ruthless execution and operate an ingenious system behind the scenes. He can be quite stern, such as being unfazed by the romance between Buddy and Darling. However, he holds a great fondness for those under his care, specifically his nephew Samm, as well as Baby. It’s clear he has a soft spot for childish things such as his reference to Monsters Inc. and knowing it as one of Samm’s favourite films. He also refers to Samm as “a chip off the old block” and seems genuinely happy at hearing that he was given a free mint.
His relationship with Baby is debatable as Doc relies on manipulation to keep him working, including after Baby has paid his debt. However, it is clear that in his own way, Doc cares for the boy. In the early scenes of the film, he defends Baby from being called slurs and compliments his driving skills, as well as states he’s been his driver on every single heist he’s been on, showing his deep loyalty and appreciation for him. It’s possible he does see Baby somewhat akin to a son, but finds it hard to properly show feelings - similar to Bats’ comment on how feelings kill in the business. In a deleted version of his death, he calls back the “You and I are a team” line to Baby, suggesting how much this has really impacted him.
Part of his behaviour may be due to him mentioning how he was in love once, which may have left him to instead repress his better feelings. This side comes out when he meets Debora, causing him to spare Baby and help him escape.
