Doctor Schreber is a minor antagonist in the 1998 post-apocalyptic role-playing video game Fallout 2. He is the head physician, scientist, and geneticist of the Enclave's primary mainland outpost, Camp Navarro.
Biography[]
A balding man in a lab coat, Schreber is the man in charge of all the medical affairs at the Navarro base. Schreber is a very cold and sadistic man with little to no regard for life. With the armor and technology at his disposal, the medical needs of the grunts are minimal, so Schreber had the infirmary remodeled as a laboratory for his experimentation. He was one of the critical members of the research staff working on the deathclaw augmentation project, intended to create cheap, expendable soldiers out of the wasteland's most fearsome mutants. Suspecting that the project was more successful than the brass imagined, Schreber transferred to Navarro with one of the test subjects, Xarn. There, he discovered that he was right; the deathclaws were more intelligent than anyone suspected and have actively deceived their Enclave overlords. He began to prepare a detailed report recommending that all deathclaws be exterminated, as a threat to humanity.
Deathclaws aren't the only subjects of his research. He also performs a variety of other experiments, with the test subjects becoming very, very "vocal" during some procedures. For this reason, the base commander had the room soundproofed, so that the screams don't carry up into the barracks. Schreber didn't mind; he appreciated the solitude and quiet. He originally worked on his research together with fellow lead scientist Dr. Henry, but they had radically different theories about their research subjects, with Henry being far more ethical than Schreber; after the five billionth argument about mutations, in a fit of anger, he told Henry he was going to recommend that he be transferred to another Enclave facility where he would be put to work on cybernetic maintenance (the equivalent of cybernetic janitorial duty). Henry took the threat very seriously, and within hours, he stole a cybernetic dog (cyberdog) and slipped away from the Navarro facility, heading east and eventually making his way down south to the NCR. The Enclave, while not pleased with his attitude and the directions of his research, were not happy with his escape (they need all the scientists they can get), and several soldiers were punished for negligence. Schreber never confessed to his role in Henry's disappearance, and simply claimed that Dr. Henry had been acting suspicious for some time, and was displaying "sympathies for the mainland mutants."
His only current "companion" is K-9, a more advanced cybernetic canine than the one taken by Dr. Henry; so advanced, in fact, that K-9 has developed sentience and an independent sense of morality. This caused him to collide with the doctor. After K-9 bit him, Schreber removed his motivator circuit, freezing the hound in place and forcing him to observe every horrible experiment Schreber performs.
Events of Fallout 2[]
In 2242, a hero known as the Chosen One infiltrated the Navarro base. Though they sloppily got caught out of uniform by drill instructor Sergeant Arch Dornan, they nonetheless continued their mission in the base, eventually making their way underground to Schreber's lab. Schreber interacted with the Chosen One for a bit, commissioning them to execute Xarn. However, the Chosen One freed Xarn, killed Doctor Schreber, and fled the base with K-9 by their side.
