~ Greg to the Dog.

The Dog is the main antagonist of the Over the Garden Wall episode, "The Old Grist Mill". He is Beatrice's pet dog that became demonic due to swallowing a black turtle and the Beast possessing him after, and chases Wirt and Greg until the latter frees him from the possession.

Appearance[]

As a normal dog, he appears to be an average sized-dog with white and orange fur. He appears to look very similar to an English Pointer.

After having swallowed the black turtle, the Beast found and possessed him, he grew almost three times in size. His fur turned grayish-black and he grew a massive mouth full of sharp fangs. His eyes glowed, grew to an immense size, and changed from their original colors; his pupils became bright red, his iris' became bright yellow, and his sclera turned bright blue.

Personality[]

When not possessed, the dog acted like a normal house pet; indifferent to his surroundings. He was often seen hanging around Beatrice rather than other members of her family, so it's implied that he favored her over them.

When possessed, he became a ravenous brute that destroyed the Woodsman's house and terrorized the boys. He didn't seem to have any set of goals in mind, only wanting to attack Wirt and Greg for their candy. The Dog had no sense of direction, throwing his whole body at the boys and crashing into different mechanisms, even if it meant he would get hurt.

Biography[]

The Dog was Beatrice and her family's pet. After they were turned into birds, he was abandoned and left to wander the woods alone. At some point, the Dog ate a turtle with a piece of candy on it, the Beast then found him and possessed his body, turning him into a giant wolf-like monster.

Once Greg went outside to find his frog Kitty, he heard a growling in the woods. He walked towards the noise, but was turned around after hearing the frog in a barrel. After finding the frog in the barrel, he fell in, and so the Dog approached the barrel. He stuck his head inside of the barrel, where he found Greg. Offscreen, he broke the barrel, and Greg was able to escape to the house unharmed.

The Dog followed Greg into the house, where Wirt thought it was the Beast and the Woodsman prepared to attack him. Before he could, a confused Greg knocked him out because Wirt mentioned it earlier. The Dog proceeded to slowly approach Wirt, until his attention was turned to Greg because he had hit him the handle of an axe. Wirt ran into the oil production section of the Woodsman's residence, followed by Greg and the Dog. The Dog ran in and crashed into a wooden bull-wheel, but immediately pushed it off of his body. Wirt then attempted to throw potatoes at him, but to no affect. Greg then threw candy at the Dog and he licked it up. After he finished, he flipped over the wooden structure they were standing, accidentally blocking his path. He continued to scratch at the wooden structure while Wirt and Greg made their escape onto the roof. The Dog followed them up, and after Greg threw his last piece of candy off the rood, the Dog followed. He ended up falling into the watermill, where the pressure caused the Woodsman's mill to collapse. It also caused the turtle to finally escape his throat, turning him back to normal. He walked out as his normal self with Greg on his back, shook off some of the wetness, and then went to find a place to nap. In the process of the attack, the oil the Woodsman already collected had spilled out, making him panic about his daughter. He also told Wirt that the Dog wasn't the Beast then sent the boys to Pottsfield to try and help them get home.

The Dog was seen in the final episode looking out the window with Beatrice after she had been turned back into a human.

Trivia[]

  • When possessed, the dog shared the same eye colors as the Beast.
  • The Woodsman stated that, unlike the dog, the Beast couldn't "be mollified like some farmer's pet", but ironically (as he likely didn't know), the Beast was defeated in a way that's arguably quite easier than how the dog was.
